CSU questions from a hs senior

So I've pretty much decided that I'm going to csu next year. I'm super excited but I have some questions first. I can't decide right now between art/graphic design and forestry. I talked to the head of the art department the other day and she told me that csu is pretty old school when it comes to art, and I'm more into computer graphic design then the painting/sculpting type stuff. I also really like the idea of forestry and I could definitely see myself doing forest fire fighting and stuff like that. So if any NSers are doing these majors or just anyone at csu that could help me out with my decision that would be great.

Thanks guys!

Go into college with an open mind, not a major. I don't think I know more than 4 or 5 people who stuck with their initial thoughts, including myself. You have no clue what college is like yet, how do you expect to pick your career for AFTER college already?

^Some truth behind that, I knew from the get go I was going to do marketing and political science...no regrets, maybe only that I didn't do more in finance.

I agree that you need to let your courses and interests guide you to a degree, but you can be equally f'd by waiting until your 3rd year to set a direction b/c by then you may realize how hard the last two years will be, or equally bad that you're about to get some bogus degree.

I know what you're saying but I wasn't trying to come off like that. I guess my question is for info on forestry and graphic design at csu, that I can't just get off their website.

I went to school for graphic design, and the majority of my design professors had majored in fine arts. Honestly all of the technical computer classes are a waste of time, and you will learn more about the programs on your own with books and online resources (everyone learns at their own pace, and a class learns as fast as its slowest student). I wish I had taken more traditional fine arts classes. Form and color are things that are better studied in a group, because you get to see how 30 other people did the same exercise as you, and you can soak in techniques and pick up more unique styles. When its time to show a project in a computer design class (especially the beginner classes) most of the class has a piece of shit because they were focusing on technical requirements and learning the programs. I graduated last year with a graphic design major, and have taken on web programming as a hobby. Its turned into a few steady freelance clients that are supporting me financially. I work when I want to, hell I could "go to work" naked.

Just like anything else though, the more time you put into practicing the better you will get. I've found its a really competitive business, and you need to put in the extra time and effort to stay on top, or you may need a second job.

I'm a Natural Resource Management Major, which is very similar to the forestry major. I love it. The Natural Resource department (includes forestry) is the smallest college (but one of the most respected) on campus. The professors are all awesome (especially Rocky Coleman) and the people are much more down to earth than in other majors from what I've seen. The art, from what I've seen (which isn't much) seems to be more on the non-digital side of things.

Plus, as a forestry or natural resource management major you get to go here for 4 weeks:

I was in almost the same situation last year (im a freshman at CSU) and it was really hard for me to decide between natural resources / forestry over art. CSU art school seems to be pretty old school, i have yet to meet anyone here in digital arts or graphic design. I have a friend in the art school so i'll pick his brain for info if you need to know anything. However, I can already tell you the warner college of natural resources is awesome which is part of what brought me out here (im from boston) Even the entry level courses i'm in now are pretty interesting and im stoked to get more involved with them. ive already taken a few volunteer opportunities through warner that have been pretty sweet (doing another Saturday depending on my hangover situation/ sleepy factor if)

PM me if you have any questions i'm happy to help :)
