hey guys,i started crocheting a little while ago and every time when i'm done with the pancake and start doing all singles it doesnt really curl enough. the pancake just ends up getting bigger. I need your help. this is it at about four rows of all singles. what am i doing wrong? i started all singles when i got up to 10s1d. this has also happened to all my other attemps.

Thanks,K

couldnt really understand you but if you didnt do a pattern you should. i go,

all doubles

SDSD

SSDSSD

SSSDSSSD

SSSSDSSSSD

i usually do this up to about seven singles and one double and then just do all singles

Don't feel bad, I tried my hand at crocheting today for the first time, not my forte. I wish I could at least make a pancake.

what the first person said sounds very reasonable. i crochet in the opposite direction, starting with a chain and finishing with closing the top of the hat, so thats not much help to you, but you could try it that way. join the crochet cult for pointers

just use a pattern from the internet, once you've done that a few times you can just freestyle it

ok so i started a new one. chain 52 rows of all doublessdssdetc.
but its shaped like this

is this a problem?

i cant really tell from that last pic..but in the first one, i think you made your pancake too big. Follow that pattern in the first post. Each line is a row in the hat.

Join the crochet cult too.

your not being patient enough, the pancake dosnt curl right away just keep adding rows to that first one and it will turn in to a hat guaranteed

the first one you made the pancake too big, you could have kept going but the hat would only fit a really fat head. make a smaller pancake, be patient and eventually it forms a toque like shape

ok. join the crochet cult.but.if you mix doubles and singles in a pattern like your first picture you'll get a pancake. good. if you add too many doubles and not enough singles it'll get wavy like your second picture. if you add too many singles and not enough doubles it'll start to curve down too soon and it won't fit.
when you switch to all singles the hat will curve down and make a hat. good. if it's not curving down fast enough you can skip stitches. (instead of going into the next hole for your stitch, skip it and go to the next. skip one every 10-15) this isn't the 'best' way to do it, but it can make up for a pancake that's a little too big.
if it's getting wavy early on you can do a row of all singles or at least more singles than the pattern would normally call for to try to straigthen it out.

ok thanks alot.i'm already part of the crochet cult. a lot of people say that your pancake is done either when you have 74 stiches or when its like 17 cm in diameter.
mine is around 80 stitches around but its only 14 cm.should i do more stiches? im up to ssssssd.

I actually make my hats out of a circle thingy that is really easy and I can make sick hats in like 30 minutes

Go check out hobby lobby or any place like that

join the cult, tons of info in there.

Also make sure you don't crochet too tight, especially on the doubles. That will make it curl in more.

My pattern is

chain 4

double to 8

sd to 16

ssd to 24

sssd to 34

then all singles and 4 doubles per row until 44, then all singles.

ok. i can't stand to count stitches or whatever when i'm crocheting. i lose track too easily.so. how does the hat look like it will fit on your head. put it on and see what it's like. if it isn't small start doing all singles now. it might take a row or two before you start to notice it really come in so keep that in mind.iif after a few rows it's for sure not going to fit your head, you're going to have to take the rows out and make it bigger. it will hurt to destroy your hard work but it'll go away as soon as you start going again.
if it's too big you can either take it out a bit and start singles sooner or just skip some stitches as you go and hope it turns out ok. really, a hat isn't super complex and it stretches and stuff so your mistakes won't show much. just go for it.
remember: singles make it curve indoubles make it flatskipping makes it curve faster
that's all you need to know.
