Conversations With Family Members...Who Don't Ski...

My best conclusion to conversations with family members, DON'T. Every time I have a get together with family all around the states and other regions, they always ask me the same question "What sports do you play these days?". At this point I already have a ski movie in the DVD player and there already going bananas about the most seen moments in skiing, followed by the first words out of there mouth they can put together to make a name for it. Then followed by me correcting them in the most accurate way possible.

- Skier Grabbing Ski/Skis

Family Member- "Oh my! Jake did you see that? That young man just did a "Rail Grab!"

Me- "No, i'm sorry. That's just called a grab. There's no rail. It's a sidewall.

- Skier with a terrible choice in outerwear

Family Member- "Wowy! Look at that stylish jacket!"

"Oh. Yea that's Jon Olsson."

- Skier riding Switch

Family Member- "That takes some skill riding with your skis backwards!"

Me- "NO. That's called riding switch"

At this point. Everyone is stairing at me thinking i'm the biggest dick on the planet due to my over usage of correctional bodies of vocabulary. Everyone has left the room and now I am stuck watching EDIAS by myself for the 15th time in a row. I need some skiers in my life.

to a certain extent i love when people who dont know anything about skiing are excited about "the most seen moments in skiing". who cares if they know the terminology or not

Haha loser my family totally knows what's up. They always ask me how's my snowboarding going and stuff...cept I have been skiing all my life and tell them EVERY SINGLE FUCKING TIME THAT I FUCKING SKI.

my dad use to be like that, then he just picked up all the lingo from me over time, and now he knows grabs more then i do haha

learn that you probobly sound just as stupid to them(talking about stuff like "riding switch"), as they sound to you saying ('stylish jacket").

they are just trying to converse with you about something they know you are interested in, just take it with a grain and live and let die.

actually thats not fair for me to say. my dad is a backcountry tour guide so he has always kinda had all the terminology down... he taught me most of it.

ive never really had to deal with the family member frustrations.

im that you feel as if you have to correct them, im sure that its annoying... haha

As said above, I love when people who haven't freeskied or done any winter sports for that matter, are amazed by some Henrik-style buttering on rails. They go crazy.

Usually people don't try and act like they know stuff.

Idk just be glad that they have an interest in our sport.

What i hate is when im watching a movie like refresh or EDIAS with some friends or family that dont ski. And when something that makes me jump because it was so awesome, it doesnt phase them.

Honestly, you're making yourself sound like a dick.

When I have people say things like this, especially if it's aunts, uncles, parent's friends, etc, I just agree and laugh a little to myself so no one notices.

Does it really matter that much to you that a bunch of non-skiers know specific ski facts?

what really pisses me off, is when they ask how I good I am or whatever and I say, "well, in fresh snow I hold my own, i slay the rest of the mountain, and I love rails and skiing park.".

And they just say something like, "Oh. You're THAT kind of skier. " and they change the subject

i went to see re:session with a non-skiing and a skiing friend. it was funny because he said they were doing crazy shit and we just shrugged. we saw EDIAS before

my grandma asks me at least once a week if im still doing track.

every week i tell her that yes, im doing cross country but track is in the spring.

every week. at least ever week.

Everytime old (50+) ask me what sports I do, I say freestyle ski. Then i'm like fuck. Because now there already into the olympics with me.

At least they are interested in it. I can't pop in a ski film without my family complaining about how boring it is.

My family doesn't even know ski movies exist. I'm not sure they know skiing exists. My parents do cause my dad skis but most others, not a clue.

Some of my friends are the same way, they are like, "What the fuck is this shit?". Makes me want to punch babies.

My fam has no idea about skiing although today my younger sis recognised a picture of Chug, it made me proud

You shouldn't look down on your family for not knowing correct skiing terminology, or much about the sport in general. You should in fact embrace it and give it the respect it's due. Most who don't know about freestyle skiing are really oblivious to everything about the sport, because no one talks to them about it. It's your chance to set them off in the right mind set.

Exactly, my dad and sister don't really know a lot about Newschool skiing and it gives me a perfect opportunity to show them movies and tell them all about it. It's fun.

This 100%. How would you like it if you tried to show interest in something that your uncle did and he just made fun of your lack of knowledge about it? You'd probably think that he was an asshole huh?

Same. Or when I try to show my friends ski edits like T-Wall's SFSH extras and they aren't impressed at all with the style or anything.

You're lucky that they actually care. It's cool to try and teach them some stuff, but you must have come across as a dick if they all left. Maybe be a little nicer about it.

skiing is my life, i think about it all day everyday, its all i talk about, no one finds it as interesting as i do, this is why i have a NS account

Grow up man, you don't have to be stuck up about it. If they see how much you love the sport they will probably appreciate it for that reason, not because you know everything about skiing.

i live just south of dc but get out west about twice a year, and also have been skiing since i can remember.and ill be talking about skiing and someone will be like oh i ski, but really they mean theyve been to the 1500 vert mountains we have out here. and roughly 95% of them rent. so you can only imagine how excited i am the few times i ask oh what do you ski on and they actually tell me a ski name.
sparknotes: mid atlantic sucks, people think they know about skiing but dont

seriously, how are they supposed to know all the termanology?

fuck you op, you are a dick.

btw, the only time i get a little urked is when people say i snowboard... when i have already been like all about skiing. some of my closest friends make that mistake and im like ARRRGGGG IM A BLOODY SKIER!
