*CONTRAVERSIAL THREAD WARNING* OIL spill

This is a serious thread so listen to everything I have to say before losing it.

I get a crack out of how we fucked up hard with the oil spill. It seems to me that the more oil that spurrs out of that pipe and the more failed containing attempts just make me laugh more. I actualy want to see them failing hard and not containing it for a while.

now heres the part where I calm you down.

I am concious that its a HUGE environmental impact and that it will eliminate several marine species and have second hand effects on even more. There is also the economical impact on fishing villages that are basicaly doomed and other buisnesses that will close down, leaving poor working class people jobless. This is far from a positive thing or one to laugh at.

What does create this humoristically macabre reaction is to see the government and our loose laws favoring oil companies become a laughing stock. The ordeal could have all been avoided if the multi billion dollar oil company had invested in a little safety measure. Instead the most profitable industry in the world continues to operate under little laws conserning safety for situations like these. we ride the dicks of the richest companies in the world so that they can save some bank and be happy. We have to re-evaluate our priorities and keep these money makers under check since they have only the american bill in mind and nothing else. Maybee this huge spill will wake people up and oil companies will have to suck up the costly responsibility of the dangers they bring instead of ignoring it for the greater good of the wealthy american.

and that ladies and gentlemen, is what grinds my gears today

im just hoping something positive comes out of this. like a reinstatement of the offshore drilling ban and tougher safety measures. hopefully it will ACTUALLY prove to people that we need to stop using oil

i had a project on oil companies awhile ago, it astonishes me most that they simply wont reinforce the hulls of their ships. what would the cost of reinforcing their hulls be compared to dealing with the price of cleaning up oils spills, i mean really so many spills in the past could have been avoided if they simple had multiple layers of reinforcement.

Not necessarily humorous, in my opinion, but more ironic and just. It's about time the impact of our abuse of oil hit some form of rock-bottom, and I think this is it. I'm not laughing at how much shit this is going to cause.

this is 100% the oil companies fault. the government should not be blamed. While the government should have had more stringent regulations, companies who knowingly ignore basic security protocols are at fault for any problems that come up. fuck bp

In other news Nancy Pelosi believes that this is all Bush's fault.

Excuse me for a moment females of NS but that bitch is a fucking dumb bitch and shouldn't be a politician.

Watch the cancer rates surrounding the golf & world wide sky rocket.

This is my hunch.

See you in twenty years...

couldnt have said it better great writing

big bussinesses should have a profit limit but that would b like socialist which ive been told is bad but it would help everyoen out i guess lol probably wont work lol

I don't get how people can fucking laugh at this. Do you all realize that the oil is about to arrive (already has arrived) at a huge drop off, and then that drop off will send the oil through currents straight to the Keys. People right now helping clean up beaches in Louisiana, Mississippi, etc... are being hospitalized because of the oil.
When we hear about a new plan that has been thrown together, we should hope it works, and when it doesn't, I have no fucking idea why people would laugh at that. This could permanently damage the Gulf.

while i can see that its kind of "black comedy" how poorly the oil companies who everyone already hates is fucking this up so royally, but i can't really "get a crack out of" this situation, sorry

These oil companies need to get their shit together. The government needs to start to restrict this industry more because what they are doing in all aspects right now is just fucked.

don't be dumb.

Obviously you're not going to be able to point at one person in this instance and say, yup, it's all his/her fault -- you can't do that under most circumstances.

However, you can lay some blame on Bush & Cheney -- for example the MMS approved of BP's drilling without requiring a Blowout Prevention Plan in April 08...

You might also blame the republicans who've been holding up Obama's appointee confirmations. Though, I'm not sure of specific positions-- thus I can only submit this as a general complaint.

point is, you're letting your rage blind you.

I completely agree.

and since the mud plan epic failzorz'd does that mean we get to go with the russian plan of detonating a nuke under-water to contain the spill?

Cause we can put all the BP execs down there too..

- America.

You fucked up. End of story. It happens it happened on piper alpha, we fucked up- never again. I just hope those 11 families are doing ok right now. Stop trying to blame other people. But in america it's all about who to blame yeah? What are you all going to say when gas is 12 bucks a gallon? Or when a nuclear power plant explodes! Americans can't even manage their own oil industry, let alone nuclear....

Oh and every captain I've worked with offshore in the gulf has been an ex fisherman- you know the one thing that all if them has said is the biggest threat to the industry? China. Ha ha, America IMPORTS most of it's shrimp from china!! Fuckers don't deserve good seafood. Most of the guys I work with offshore are ex fisherman - go ahead, ban oil.... See what happens to louisianas economy. You need to be VERY careful with your next moves. I personally would love to see what America would be like with 14$ a gallon! Just like Europe. See how much they care about the environment then!!!

yeah a lot of people say its the bp's fault its you think bp wanted to drill 500ft under water to get there oil no the gov made them drill there

I know almost for a fact that BP is trying a quick fix. All they want is to stop the leaking just enough so they can try to get another rig pumping right in the same damn spot or else they loose lots of money from claiming that specific well. (i've worked on an offshore oil rig during summers and so has most of my family)

IF they don't alread have another Rig on site doing what is called horizontal drilling to help aleviate pressure they i garuntee i'm right. This means that because the government didn't take action themselves and just let BP try to solve it. BP is only acting in concerns of their pocket book not the environment or any other factor.

there's another oil well like 20 miles from this one, which recently failed a safety test... If it blows, it will be exponentially worse than the current situation. I heard something like in 4 days it will have done what this one has over the past month or so.
Conclusion: humans are fucking retarded.

very eloquently stated my friend, I actually have my own idea of what should be done, and if any of you fuckers or the government gets wind of this i want CREDit. Anyways, so my idea is basically deploy mid sized robots about the size of a toyota Camry, underwater and have these remote controlled robotic submarines capture and filter the oil from the salt water. Once their tank is full balloons automatically deploy thus bringing the sub up to the surface of the, Ocean thus giving BP and the world their oil back, oil that can be of great assistance in the lubrication of the penis before sexual intercourse with the anus of another man, the other man being the CEO of BP. Thank you and goodnight. I'll be here 'til Thursday.

I think it's ironic that it was this of all things that derailed comprehensive climate change and renewable energy legislation. We need to become the world leaders in clean energy. And fast. I honestly think that the only way the US will not have to concede to China is if huge incentives are given for renewables like wind and solar. The time is now. Let's do this now and let's succeed.

actually its crude oil coming straight form the sea floor that type of oil will get eaten by bacteria in salt water in like a month.

I do agree that this is good cause it will most likely place a bigger push on finding a renewable energy source. I myself believe we should be investing in natural gas because its abundant and cleaner to burn than oil and coal. But for the time being we as americans cant magically release our dependence on oil over night because it would drastically hurt our economy which is the last thing we need. Thats why politicians have to be careful about reform because if they come up with any restrictions that hurts our economy then we'll be real fucked.

they're not retarded. they're just lazy.
and i think the underlying problem here is the fact that many many industries believe in cutting corners to save a dollar, and that really pisses me off. if you worked with someone like that, chances are you'd tell him to fuck off and do his job, but it's funny how many people don't want to waste their time trying to change how monopolies run their businesses. in fact i'd go as far as to say that many people even run their countries that way.

Yeah, I wonder if they have the resource to fix this, and are just trying cheaper options first. Even then, as soon as the first cheap option fails, then it and the second option (which might not work) will cost a lot more.

Fuck money, fix this thing before it's too late.

I'm sad to see that people think this is actually humorous. Maybe the way we have handled it is humorous but this tragedy has ruined one of the most beautiful coasts in the US.

What pisses me off the most is BP. Normally during an oil spill, the leaking oil would stay at the surface allowing for scientists and the oil company itself to easily evaluate how much oil has been released. Instead, BP has been using a dispersant, which the EPA has been very strongly against, to spread out the oil, allowing for it to be spread throughout the depths of the ocean. This allows for a near impossible way for anyone to truly know how much oil is being leaked. This fucking sneakiness is what is pissing me off.

And for people saying "oh this could have been easily prevented with safety measures". Not quite. Accidents happen. This particular event occurred from a series of EXTREMELY rare malfunctions which all occurred at the right (wrong i guess) time. What could and should have been done was safety measure in case shit like this happened, which never did.

FUCK BP AND THE US MONEY GRUBBING BASTARDS!

"Contraversial" you say?

And ya, you're whole argument is ignorant crap anyway. Not disagreeing with any particular facets of it, just in general you obviously have no idea what you're talking about.

people are adaptive. i'll tell you what would happen. we would finally invest in alternative energy and product sources. you could use hemp oil to replace almost anything fossil fuels are used for. may not be as high quality a product for all of it, but it's an alternative that could work. we could invest in solar, geothermal, hydro, wind and other types of energy. yes, i realize that it takes oil to start-up these sorts of infrustructures but once you get the infrastructure implanted, the need for oil will plummet. very soon in the future, we will have cars that run 100mpg or are just straight solar/water powered. i'm not too worried about it.

i don't think anybody is saying ban oil altogether, i think they're saying that we need to stop investing so much money in a non-renewable and ecologically dangerous energy source and instead invest that money in sustainable sources such as the ones i mentioned above. and fuck nuclear, i agree with you on that one.

Have you ever studied alternative energy? The difficulties we are facing with geothermal, solar, wind, etc. aren't just going to disappear if we pour money into them (even though to suggest we aren't already is silly). That's not an excuse to forget about alternative energy, but people need to realize that oil is now, and will be for a very long time, our primary and most efficient source of energy production (please don't anybody say we are running out of oil either...that's straight bullshit, just ask anyone who works in the industry - actually an engineer for Exxon is sitting across from me and I teasing him with it now, haha). A balance of energy sources will greatly benefit our world, but Oil Spill doesn't equal Oil is Gay and should die.

And c'mon man, hemp oil? Just try to explain how you are going to power even one city on that without significant and unsustainable environmental and economic cons.

hahaaha. Only you would bring in the whole religion debate where it is not relevant at all.
