Confidentiality with doctors

Im 16 and i have a doctors appointment on tuesday( family physician) and i want to talk to him about something weed/ tabacoo related and i was wondering that since im 16 i fall under the "patient, doctor confidentiality agreement". I went to the hospital a month ago while my parents were away because i got in a fight and thought i might have broke a finger( i didnt want my parents knowing about the fight) they told me it was a tiny fracture and didnt need anything special done and also told me since im 16 they cant tell my parents.

I was just wonderign if thats the same for physicians.

on a side note, my friends therapist did just tell his parents about him smoking weed and cigs, which i was really shocked by...

Unless your parents are in the room with you, they can't tell your parents anything. Just like lawyers and priests at confession, it stays between the two of you unless there is a court order.

no they won't tell. but prepared to be in there for hours with them lecturing you on "facts" about why marijuana is bad.

they can only tell if they think that if they do not tell, you or others would be in immediate danger. Basically the only thing they can talk to others about is if they think you are likely to kill, hurt, or abuse yourself or somebody else. Weed and alcohol do not fall under this category.

They can tell your parents if you are under a certain age. I don't know what that age is, I thought it was 18 in the states, but I'm not sure. No idea on Canada.

I don't think they can right off the bat. Even if you are a heroin addict I think that they would have to recommend treatment and have you refuse before they report you. Whenever children are involved though I think that things fall into the grey area.

well you see in the fine print it says that doctors can talk between doctor and doctor, so they all get together and tell stories of how lame as shit their patients are, who had weird penis' who hasnt hit puberty, who is hairy all over, who is just stupid, and how you always have weird prostate requests.

In the USA that is illegal unless for consultations stuff like that. For gossip though they can get their licenses revoked by HIPAA regulations.

Really? Priests are under some confidentiality laws? Never heard that before, and to be honest I don't really believe it.

no its totally legit, priests, school counselors, lawyers, doctors, therapists, all have confidentiality requirements. And somewhere up there somebody (think it might have been you) was saying that doctors can talk with doctors, and that isn't entirely true. They can talk about cases or other various stories, but they can't say the patients name.

if the therapist feels that hes in danger of hurting himself or others, then they are legally obligated to tell the parents

Catholic priests aren't under a law but I thought that they generally don't tell people about things they hear in confession unless really pressured to do so. Something about the contract they have with God or something. I could be wrong though.

My doctor asked me that too and then he copped a dub sac from me and we smoked an octo-bong right there in his office. Then a snorted a line of coke of the nurse practioners ass.

wouldn't you just ask your doctor about the confidentiality first, and avoid all the speculation here?

doc i got some stuff i want to talk to you about, but i want to keep it between you and me, what can we keep off the record, and what are you mandated to report?

im guessing its a lot more strict then that, because then they could make up any excuse for doing this. and there was more backstory to it all, i just dont remember it

most people in here don't understand how this works. if you are under 18 years old, you are a minor and therefor not a legal adult. If you are a minor the doctor can tell your parents. if you are a legal adult and over 18, then they cannot.

I also thought this until my trip to the hospital( as i explained). I was able to sign for myself, and when i asked the nurse if my parents would be contacted about the visit or anything she said no since im 16 there are confidentiality rules.

So that confused the fuck out of me.
