Concussions no big deal?

Hey i've been skiing for a few years and have taken my fair share of blows to the noggin. Today at Mammoth took a huge knee to the head and i've been having a rough night. I've probably had in ten or so concussions (in my view) in a three year period with a helmet. At this point in my skiing career I don't really care about pushing the extreme agenda, but Idon't want to stop. Am I facing any medical problems or just being a pussy?

(Most people i've asked were worried but boxers and stuff are getting weekly concussions, and most guys didn't get to crazy didn't have problems later in life.)

Also any tips for dealing with concussions? Thanks mahalo!

If I were you and truly thought I had ten concussions in three years, id probably see a doctor. Most people are told to stop playing contact sports after like 4 or 5

Yeah but those are more than "minor". By the sounds of it, OP hits his head and calls it a concussion.

I've had 4 serious concussions in my 25 years of life, they occurred in the first 20 years of my life, once at 6, at 14 at 16 and at 20. My worst was my first or second, completely knocked out cold for 30+ seconds. My second two were much less severe and I've hit my head other times but they definitely wouldn't be consider anything more than a minor concussion, which in all honestly isn't anything to really be worried about.

The bad thing is if you hit you head within a short time period of your last injury, its worse depending on how bad each head blow was.

Its pretty easy to tell if you have a concussion, check your memory try to remember before and after. If you have a difficult recalling at first, you probably have a minor concussion, if you have no memory at all you probably got knocked out which is a definite sign of a more serious concussion. Every time I got one of these "serious" concussions, I had the same weird visions/images in my head, some odd sounds and feelings that would come every time I had one. If you notice something like this, you probably have a more serious concussion.

Basically, you can hit your head without getting a concussion but it will still hurt and your neck will get sore. Every time I've had a more serious concussion, I've either seeked medical help from the ski hill (last two) or went to the hospital (first two) and if you believe you're having a bad time with concussions id recommend it. They will give you a CAT scan and make sure your brain is doing okay.

concussions are nothing to fuck around with. one of my closest friends is one concussion away from having to go everywhere with a helmet. take the protection of your noggin seriously

This doesn't really make any sense, helmets do not prevent concussions... at all.

I've had one concussion in my life, just passed out and fell straight onto my face from standing. It was in the morning and my room mate called the hospital and all that BS and had to hang out there for awhile. I had a brain shear on my frontal lobe though, so thats kinda gnar.

Helmets reduce the severity and probability of suffering head trama, they do not prevent it! But your head is absolutly better off when covered by one .

Of course but for a concussion specifically... you brain can always smash against the inside of your skull.

Where did you get your information on boxers? Most of the boxers from the last generation are fucked up, look at mike Tyson, he fucking bit a guys ear off

Concussions are nothing to fuck with, and I would recommend anyone to see a medical professional if you think you have a concussion just to make sure there's no underlying problems(bleeding in the brain for example).

Minor concussions to major ones they suck. Period. People are continuously fucked by concussions. I've had around 10 minor and major concussions that I've seen a medical professional for. They want me to stop skiing and what not but that's not gonna happen. Use your judgement, if you hit your head hard you should probably take a week off and make sure you're good to go. After my last knock out I couldn't write numbers down in correct order so don't try to say boxers are fine either. Look up Teddy Atlas and listen to how he speaks.

You have NOT had that many concussions in that small of a time or else you would be taking some time off skiing and school. Even with minor concussions I've forgot almost an entire day, once you hit moderate, your brain is real cloudy for a couple of weeks or more. I hear way too often people saying they got a concussion when they just hit their head hard and felt light-headed for the day.

For like two weeks, I was really depressed after my second concussion. I also suffered from some form of depersonalization disorder. Coudn't tell if anything I was experiencing was real or not. Or even if I were real. I was convinced at times that I was inhabiting someone else's body. It was not an enjoyable experience.

Concussions R a big deal

I was advised to quit sports 8 or 9 years ago. Pretty much told I was a fucking idiot if I continued to snowboard. My brain doesnt work so well but I'm far happier that way having been riding those years than if I had quit. I'd rather go down in a blaze of glory on the old shred stick or my new trick skis than give it up.

Also, if you have had a serious one (hospitalized for a few days), you will get them far more easily. I'm at the point where any incident where if my head hits the ground even with a helmet on I'm seeing stars, not kidding one bit, I may fall 5 times a season in the park and 3 of them I'm done for the day with a headache, even with a helmet.

Also not sure if it's related but a close friend got a severe concussion and soon after became diagnosed with bi-polar and schizophrenia. Maybe the concussion triggered it.

What 'counts' as a concussion is still an open discussion in the medical community. It's been known for a while that getting knocked unconscious regularly leads to brain impairment (Dementia Pugilistica). It was thought for a long time that if you weren't getting knocked out, you were ok - however the data from the NFL/Iraq War/etc. is that even sub loss of consciousness hits can cumulatively lead to problems down the road (Chromatic Traumatic Encephalopathy). The recommendation to not get multiple concussions in a row is based on something completely different - that the headaches and difficulty concentrating tend to stick around for longer the more concussions you've recently had. The extreme version of that is Second Impact Syndrome - which is really rare, but you also really don't want it to happen to you.

We're taught in medical school that anything that causes a change in your thinking - a headache, dizziness, etc - counts as a concussion, which is synonymous with the term 'mild TBI'. Those are graded from minor (briefly feeling dizzy etc.) to more serious (loss of consciousness for 5+ minutes, severe memory loss). Do minor concussions matter down the road? Nobody really knows. All that's clear is that getting a bunch of severe concussions is bad, and that minor ones may be worse than originally thought.

Keep in mind helmets are meant for a single impact, so if you don't get a new helmet after hitting your head, it won't protect you much in the next impact. If you keep reusing your helmet that could be why you get so many concussions.

So called "multi impact" helmets (made with EPP) are not as safe as single impact (EPS) helmets. Just get a single impact EPS helmet (most helmets are EPS) and buy a new one if you hit it hard. Worth it to not keep getting concussions.
