Concussion help

Hi all,

I absolutely wrecked my shit on a pow day yesterday, knees to face on a cliff knocked me out then I like rolled into some trees n rocks. Ended up w concussion, chest contusion, chipped some of my rear molars almost bit my tongue off.

my questions are simple:

1) how frigged would it be to go back out by Monday? Looks like a nice park day.

2) how long is the recovery process with this usually? What can I expect?

3) what the hell should I eat while I have this giant cut in my mouth that can’t get shit in it?

thanks in advance.

Dang, sounds like you got lit up. Take it easy for the next few days for sure. Ive had a few concussions and each one the recovery time was different. The latest one took about 2 months before I felt 100% and the headaches lasted for a year. The last thing you want to do is hit your head again, maybe let your body rest for a bit before you are back on your skis. Im no doctor and every body is different but maybe take some time off, take it easy and get rested up. Your tongue should heal pretty quickly but soup through a straw works to get some calories. Vibes for a speedy recovery!

Shiiit bro that sounds brutal

definitely do not go out tomorrow or you’ll end up fucking yourself worse and be out for longer

I had a pretty similar concussion and I was out for like a month, however I also had stomach flu at the same time which probably hindered my recovery time so take that as you will

give your concussion symptoms a few days to present, cuz they aren’t all immediate, spend less time on ur phone and lay low, give urself time to heal cuz concussions are fucky, you gotta play your cards just right when ur healing otherwise you can end up with legit brain damage

for PCS too keep an eye on that, once u are thru with main symptoms and start to feel better, get into some mindfulness meditation and yoga flow to get those neural pathways healing smooth

Idk why I said tomorrow instead of Monday but that still stands, you need a little more time than Monday to take it easy and heal, def recommend going to a doctor and they can tell u how long u rly need to be out

I’d probably stay out of the park for a bit at the very least, last thing you want is to go light headed just as you set a rotation off a lip.

hey thank you guys. I think it is easy to have the “I won’t fall” mentality but in reality all it takes is my brain getting a little jolted again and it could be a whole nother issue. I still want to get back on the horse maybe once before the end of the season, just cruise a couple runs, but I might just take the L and call it for the year. Thank you for all the support, I love y’all.

glad to hear it. live to shred another day, you won't be sorry and you'd never forgive yourself if you compounded your issues right now cause you were impatient

if you get bored or FOMO while skipping skiing, take a few deep breaths and recognize how nice it is to have a working brain and motor function. it's really really dope

If you hit your head hard enoigh to make this thread, you should probably take a breather. I get that it might be a nice park day but you really shouldn't risk a fall.

Even hooking a weird edge doging somebody on a groomer could be not great.

My worst brain injury was a pretty weird fall. Wrapped up in a weird position on a trick caught a deep spring bombhole and got bucked hard. Whiplashed hard backwards.

Probably would have been fine otherwise but it is what it is.

Shit happens ,you're going to do what you're going to do. Those are jist my opinions.

I rode in periods where i shouldn't have, especially before concussions were thought of as anything.

Shit stacks though. I have had and will continue to have issues from my head injuries. I don't dwell on it, i can't change it, but it happens to people.

Be careful. If youre going to ski you're going to ski. Just saying be careful. A bad concussion that doesn't impact you much now will stack if you get more. If youre brain is healing and you get another one it's both easier to get, and can be much more severe.

Do what you're going to do. Only you know how you feel and where you're at. Just be aware that brain injuries suck, and be careful. You only get one brain. Stay safe

Newschoolers advice > Doctor

I’m a doctor.

OP, go see neurology and have them clear you for activity. A secondary impact while recovering from concussion can result in some serious issues including death.

There are physical therapists out there who specialist in post-concussion symptoms and return to activity.

DM me if you want to chat further !

Would take at least 2 weeks off before doing anything that could risk you hitting your head again.

brain injuries are nothing to play around with
