I've always been a fan of both albums and songs centered around a story which really develops, and can't decide which i prefer. So, I wondered what people on NS prefer and why.

Examples of Concept Albums and some info on them:

General info and examples: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concept_album

Tommy, by The Who: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_(album)

American Idiot, by Green Day: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Idiot

Animals, by Pink Floyd: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animals_(album)

Metropolis, Pt. II, Scenes from a Memory, by Dream Theater:

Rock Epics:

2112, by Rush: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2112_(song)

Echoes, by Pink Floyd: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Echoes_(Pink_Floyd_song)

Achilles Last Stand, by Led Zeppelin: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Achilles_Last_Stand

A Change of Seasons, by Dream Theater: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Change_of_Seasons_(song)

I know I haven't given all the examples of each, but should be enough for you to form an opinion if you don't already have one. Also, suggestions for others would be greatly appreciated, as I'm always looking for new music.

I personally prefer rock epics, but that could be because I don't listen to albums completely too much, I never really have the time. I think that concept albums are a really great idea though, and I love the material that comes out of them. In a way, they're really 2 sides of the same coin - concept albums are expanded rock epics in a way.
For more concept albums, check out:Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, Obscured By Clouds, Wish You Were Here, and The Final Cut by Pink Floyd. The Incident, and Fear of a Blank Planet by Porcupine Tree.Almost any Dream Theater album.Epica by Kamelot.Deloused in the Comatorium, by The Mars Volta.
For more rock epics, I recommend:Shine on You Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd. The Sky Moves Sideways by Porcupine Tree.Thick as a Brick by Jethro Tull. The entire album Black Coulds and Silver Linings by Dream Theater.Cortez the Killer by Neil Young.Indian Sunset by Elton John.

Not sure if the last 2 there really fit, but they're incredible songs, and I think everyone should listen to them anyways lol.
If anyone has any more recommendations for concept albums, prog rock, or rock epics, post up! I'm always looking for good, new music.
