Okay guys so i have a AMD based motherboard with 4 slots for ram 2 are purple and 2 are orange they set up so that the purple are side by side and the same with the orange .

i have 512MB 400MHZ which works fine. but i just found a 256 266MHZ which i would like to put in.

what slot would i use and are they compatible. and how can i tell if they are compatible or not?

thanks

So your relying on the help of the people of NS to fix your computer? I think you might be better off asking some guy a future shop.

They SHOULD work together, provided your motherboard supports the 266mhZ memory, but the slower RAM will bring down your effective clock speed on the 400mhZ ram to 266mhZ. With memory so cheap nowadays, you're better off just spending $30 on a new 256mb stick of DDR400 RAM.

As for the slots, they should be numbered 1,2,3,4, etc, with 1 being the primary slot. Again, I don't think it matters for most mobo's, but you would put it in the next slot up.

Faster to get 2 x 512 than one 1024, i believe.

i think that whether or not 2x512 or 1024 is faster depends on the processor, maybve

i don't hink you need that much RAM to begin with, i have a 256 and a 512 and that's almost to much. But yeah i don't see why AMD motherboard would give you that in the first place but like melv's said. I dont' think they would put em there if they didn't go hand and hand. And if that's right, then that is sick, my computer only has two RAM slots.

dont need so much ram? well, I say you have to get atleast 1GB of RAM if you are getting some ram, New games request 1GB ram if you want to play with high graphic and shit, and if you are making movies, ram is important. If youre gonna buy 1gb ram, get crossair 2x 512 PC3200, if they with to your motherboard..make sure that the ram you buy fits to your computer

2x 512mb is about twice as cheap as a 1gb stick, and offers pretty much the same performance.

Your motherboard specs tell you that it can support RAM up to 400mhz, so on newegg, sort it by speed, and set it to DDR400, or PC3200. This should give you what you need.
