Compression files on a mac

So i need something to uncompress some files on my new mac but every time i download stuffit or anything it reads the setup like a text file. Any help?

I thought mac's were almighty and didn't have any errors or issues, you must have your mac confused with a PC.

When you open the .dmg it does that? Right click what every your trying to open an go to the Open With part and see what its doing, it will say (default) by the one it usually opens with. This sounds like a User error, not the computer.
