Colorado State University ski acess

I was accepted to CSU this year and I'm touring in a couple weeks. CSU is one of my top choices but it's so far from resorts. I'm wondering how people get to the mountains...do they have buses and clubs that carpool? How much they cost? I also have a touring setup so I'm wondering if there is any gnarly backcountry I can get to that's real close. I'm only skiing 2 days a week and honestly it isn't enough. So if any of you have gone to CSU please let me know your experiences with skiing from Fort Collins.

I don't know a whole lot about Colorado... But I am currently at Washington State University, and the only way I have been able to go skiing on a regular basis was by joining the Ski Team "sport club". Out in the Palouse, we are about 3 hours from any of the ski mountains so joining the club was the only way possible for me to be able to ski. The club sport is racing which is whatever you make it out to... but believe but once you get over that, there are more days free skiing the trees cliffs than days going through gates. Also because your in Colorado they might have a Freeride team or something sick like that. Our team has also worked out a deal with the mountain for very affordable season tickets (Brundage WHOOP WHOOP best snow in Idaho). the club is pretty sick because we get the university to pay for some of our gas expenses, also once you have friends in the club carpooling to the mountain becomes really easy. I don't know where the ski areas are relative to Fort Collins, but I would Highly recommend joining a ski club there...

Hang Loose!

I go to DU but I'm sure there are clubs and buses that carpool. There's a fair amount of backcountry in CO but you should be really experienced in avy and snowpack conditions. Imo CSU is the worst colorado school to go to for skiing behind CU boulder CC and DU. Where else did you get into?

I was accepted to western state Colorado university too which is like 40 mins from crested butte. I'm going to tour both schools in a couple weeks and gonna be able to to ski for a few days. Definitely going to ask around about ski clubs and how to get to the mountain. Still waiting on the university of Utah but I have a feeling I'm not going to get in.

Im a freshman at csu. I've been able to get up to the mountains every weekend Ive wanted to just from meeting other skiers and occasionally getting rides from the carpool page the ski club has. The move is usually to find enough people to throw on an airbnb and go up for the weekend.

Hell yeah that's dope, where do people usually ski?? I think I'm gonna get an epic pass and try to shred vail mostly for their dope cliffs and pow. Def wanna get to breck and key but I'm more about mountain shredding than park.

Currently in my 3rd year at CSU. First two years I did the Rocky Mountain Super Pass, so I skied Copper and WP a lot. I-70 sucks. Usually around 2.5-3 hours depending on traffic. Luckily I found a buddy that had a place in Frisco so we could head up Friday nights.

This year I didn't want to deal with I-70 so I just did backcountry. Cameron Pass and RMNP are only about 1.5 hours from Foco, and the drive is much more relaxing. Fort Collins is definitely not in the best location for skiing, but you can do it.

There's a student org called snowriders that does shuttles to some of the resorts. I just kinda found other people that skied and had the same pass for the first two years, and then met more people that were into BC to do that this year.

You can absolutely ski a lot, but you will have to drive. 2.5 hours without traffic but half of drive can be a traffic jam. Eldora is small but a bit closer (hardly worth the saved time on the road).

Western state is a skier's dream. 20 minutes to a world class mountain with enormous terrain.

Dude go to western if you want to ski in college all the time. It's in Gunnison where rent is cheap and there's an easy bus ride over to CB. Not to mention there's some really great skiers who go to western because the terrain in CB is really really good. So lots of friends to ski with and lots of carpools.

Or University of Utah is right next to Alta and Snowbird and a TON of skies go there. But it's in a much busier city and they have really weird liquor laws in the state...

To be even closer to Alta, at a better school and not filled with mormons, one would want Westminster College.

If skiing is a big priority, go to western state. Better terrain, waaaay closer to skiing, and way less crowded. Living on the front range will be so frustrating dealing with traffic and crowds. Vail is good but gets skied out on a pow day by 1030 just like all the resorts near denver. You can be a ski bum at western, but you'll just be another weekend warrior sitting in traffic if you go to CSU

Ayy das me! But I also get to have a fun big school experience in a sick town with every outdoor opportunity besides a ski resort outside my back door and still a decent 42 day season (without a car).
