Colorado lines

This is insane... as ski resorts everywhere continue to grow and appeal to a wider audience, is skiing just going to keep getting busier beyond reason? Or is this just a cycle?

Bad lines at PC/Canyons today too, nothing nearly on that level however. Thankful to be local on weekends like this for the sole reason of not having to pay thousands of dollars to fly your family out only to wait in line all weekend while you paid a premium to do so.

I'm curious to see what the effects of this will be, vail is laughing in the back counting money, but will there be a rebirth of smaller resorts perhaps?

we need to be publicizing these pics as much as possible. maybe it will encourage some texans to stay home

I'd rather ride a normal groomers day than a crowded pow day any time. If I never got to ride pow maybe Id be down. If you're on vacation you just gotta deal with it but otherwise i dont get it. People get powder fever. I love pow, but nothing is worth lines and crowds like that. Fuck that

actually super true, at this point who would want to keep going to resorts and wait in line an hour for each run... while paying $150 for a lift ticket. It’s almost like these resorts have reached the end of their lifespan and something has to change.

If a place is charging close to 200 amd has lines that long I'd say it def is not reaching the end of it's lifespan. Does it look fun? Fuck no. Does it look profitable? Absolutely

But would much rather ride smaller joints or midweek and non pow days.

Yeah true, I just wonder if there will ever be a point where these people realize, “why the hell am I paying to wait in line and ski crowded ass runs??”

speaking from personal experience here, my family has been living in Texas for years and stopped skiing in Colorado for this exact reason. Realized there’s places like Whitefish which charge ~$60 for a lift ticket and hardly exceed 5 minute lift lines.

And I’m sure half those ppl in line posted how EPIC their 39” powder day was in Vail! 39” that skied like 10” because it was dense and wind/sun effected.

Give me a low end quiet powder day any day. Fuck Vail for saying the Mtn was 100% open in the morning when in reality like 40% was.

Smart. It reminds me of the spring break type vacation destinations. Places like Myrtle beach etc. Go to a place that has nothing but a ton of hotels and other tourists. Spend your time looking for a spot to sit on the beach or swimming in basically a crowded amusement park wave pool.

Idk. People see or hear about something being the spot and they just have to go. Even in the national parks, id do a lot of the hikes that were "THE hikes". I'd rather hike 12 miles or so with some pretty sick views without people than be in a queue for that hike with slightly better views etc.

A lot of those big mountains are sweet but if you're out there to ski, a small mtn without the crowds is simply better imo. Crowds play as big a factor as snow, vertical, terrain etc. It could be the best mtn in the world, but if you're just waiting in line all day, that's just shit, and people are lying to themselves if they say it's awesome.

Holidays are always going to be a shitshow, Im surprised more people don't vacation ti mtns better than their home, but still smaller and less crowded.

Ocean City is Hell on earth. Thank god all the white trash tourists haven’t ruined the state park with wild horses that’s only like 30mins from it.

This is why my favorite time of the ski season is post spring break. Most people don't plan ski vacations after this, the average recreational skier seems to forget that the resorts are open in the spring, and its after you've had all season to work on new tricks and skills. Not to mention the softer snow

Yeah pretty much this minus the groomer part. I prefer the day after a powder day. Powder day is long lines and all the good terrain is closed for avalanche control. Day after the pow day the lines are way down and the gnar is open.

We were stoked since we got a rope drop, but then it brought us to chair 5. 55 minute line and that was earlier when it wasn’t as long. Did the front side and trees the rest of the day and had a blast getting away from the people. I’ve never been so happy to ski trees. I had to get away from people.

Aside from the long wait time, worst part about those powder day lines is all the anger and passive aggression you hear all day in the lift line.

Absolutely right. I’ve had such amazing big powder days skiing Breck in April. And you can drive fast there and back usually

I wish my friends skied park. I got nobody to push me, then I get stuck with them having to go thru the powder day bullshit

Surprised your family never hit up Toas, Red River or Ange Fire in NM since y'all are close. Lift tickets have always been cheap and they are hardly ever crowded.

I wish Ocean City would get wiped off the face of the earth.

I would just like to point out this might not be true. Big mega resorts are growing for sure. But lots of small mountains are shutting down or struggling to stay open.

Here's what I see happening: Instead of getting a season pass at their local mtn, people are just getting IKON/Epic passes and going on 3 - 4 ski vacations a year. 10 years ago people would get a pass at their local mountain and go on maybe one trip a year.

Never underestimate the lengths that jerrys in Colorado will go to for an instagram photo. I'm convinced most people here don't actually enjoy skiing considering how angry they all seem to be. I had a lady screech at me like a rabid animal in the Keystone parking lot the other day lmao. They all just want to maintain that Colo-brah-bro image on their social media.

This 100%. My little hill was bought by Vail last year and I would bet I am only one of a handful of people who didn't get the Epic and just got the local. Everyone I ride the lift with is always talking about taking that trip out west to ski the real mountains.

refering to OP - that photo you posted I would say is an anomoly because it snowed 2 ft overnight on top of another foot. Friday was one of the deepest days of my life (copper) and of course everyone got there early and lined up, I bet it was the only lift open (copper only opened like 3 lifts) because of the high winds/avy danger. This doesn't happen every day, but waking up early and waiting in a lift line has been a thing for years, its just more exaggerated now because of social media.

That being said, utah resorts on the ikon pass are noticeably busier which i know people in Colorado have been complaining about, but I don't think you can blame friday on the ikon pass.

Literally this. Most people don't actually want to ski, they just want people to know they went skiing.

I went up to Sunday River this weekend with a group of friends and they all skied for legit 3 hours before heading back to the airbnb. When I got back, (of course, skied till last chair) they were all talking about how hard they pushed it and how many runs they got in. I just rolled my eyes, and then went to bed early to ski more on Sunday before I headed home.

So fucking frustrating.

make double chairs and midweek days where the lifties know you by name and you bring them beer great again

We used to have locals day at my hill. Every Wednesday the mountain was full of camo suits and one piece carrhartts with tons of Busch cans under the chairs. Best time ever.

Agree about the day after a powder day or that afternoon. Also, the low end powder day that becomes a sleeper day. Those are often better than the mega days.

Spring skiing is all-time. Nothin like rippin bumps with a good group of homies on a sunny day with minimal lift lines

I used to have an app that tracks your vert, speed, distance time etc. when skiing. I deleted it awhile ago since I would focus waaaaaay too much on numbers and not the actual skiing. And on an unrelated note, I heard that there was a trend a few years back where influencers would fake goggle tans, or just get one crazy goggle burn where they look like a racoon.

Fuck I miss A Basin spring skiing. Nothing like bombing Lenawee and Dercum to see how high you can make it back up that face off the lookers left of Pali. Or the unsanctioned pond skimming.

Hahahah to be honest, I always thought goggle tans were sick af...

...until I got one suuper bad from skiing at Breck in April last year that didnt go away for legit weeks. It was so late in the season people didnt realize it was a goggle tan and my co-workers legit thought I had a disease....

Summit County was a bust this week. Eldora was rad af both days this weekend and had minimal lines all weekend. feeling like im bout to start hot lapping eldora's park instead of copper

I know with a place like vail it’ll never happen but do you think they should limit ticket sales for certain days. That way people would buy more season passes and you could (theoretically) charge more for exclusivity.

Giggle tans in my book is when you slowly develope the tan line over the course of the season due to how much you ski. It’s natural and shows how hard core your are.

Goggle burns are something we have all been through, I mean look at my profile picture. They are the result of not wearing sun screen on a spring day

btw the giggle burn in my profile pic was also the result of a spring day at brek last April. Dead ass

I was thinking about this wondering why some people go. Not everyone but there's gotta be a lot if people. If it says 3 feet, gotta get ti the mtn and get a shot if a pow turn even if only t fert from groomed trail and only good turn if the day with 2 hour lines and a 5 hours trfgic jam on 70. But you can tel everyone at work you were there, it was sick, and shiw them the shot.

Traffic sucked all weekend on i-70. The lift lines were long and tedious to say the least.

Getting in line 1.5 hours before opening at Loveland seemed crazy.

But that first run was so glorious, so worth all the stress and anticipation.

I just try to remember it would have taken me considerable more effort/time to earn that same amount of vertical skinning.

Big inbounds pow days come at a crowded cost unfortunately...

Who doesn't like skiing pow with lift access?

Smile!

Skiing is fun!

Spray everyone!
