Color Grading

Couldn't find a thread on color grading so i figured I would make one. Color grading and post production is something I have struggled with and I am hoping you all have some experience or tips, or even just links to check out. Also want to clarify, I don't mean color correction, but color grading. I use Lightroom but anything will help

Are you talking about photo or video?

I wouldn't call photo editing "colour grading", its really just a term reserved for video.

If you're really serious about it or you want your videos to look as good as they can, definitely look at learning the free version of davinci resolve. The masking features and the node system is unlike any colouring software.

Otherwise you can find lots of free LUTs for Adobe Premiere out there, and learn how to tweak them.

Also colour correction is essentially part of colour grading. I'm pretty sure that "colour correction" came to be from people who shoot on motion picture film that needed to be corrected when it wasn't shot in the proper colour temperature.

Both photo and video, Lightroom lets you edit video clips but its super minimal.

Interesting, I always understood color correcting as editing so that the media is as the human eye would see it, and color grading as applying creative changes to it. I could be confusing it though you're right. I have a long way to go in the photo/video game but I'm just trying to focus in on some specific things I can work on to get better, which I think for now is color grading and post production

You're right here. I was just saying that often there are corrections made while you're colour grading. In my eyes if you're colour grading you're also doing some correction. Typically the corrections are exposure and white balance, things that are also incorporated into the look of a LUT.

Also, I think that its a great choice to focus on the post production side of things. You can really improve your media in the post process and you'll start to notice things you can do in camera and while shooting to improve.
