Hey guys, i'm a junior in high school, and as of now my situation as far as college is concerned is limited. Price is a key factor.

One of my options, which i really want to follow, is to move out to cali, more specifically mammoth and ski/go to school for atleast one year. I found out theres a community college in/near mammoth lakes, and was wondering if anyone goes there. If so, i'd like to know some info about the school, housing, the city, mtns and all that juicy stuff. Skiing is hopefully going to be a huge part of my college experience, and i really want to head out to mammoth.

I have no idea about what the school would be like at Mammoth lakes, but if you're going to go to college in california and ski, there are plenty of other options.

The Tahoe area has 2 junior colleges (truckee, and South Lake), University of Nevada Reno, and Sierra Nevada College that are all well in range of sick skiing in tahoe, and within 3 hours of mammoth as well. There are also Jr. Colleges in Reno, but if you're going to go there, you might as well go to South Lake or Truckee instead.

Colleges in southern california are also options, but thats 5 or so hours up to mammoth, and the LA resorts the rest of the time, which are all close, but can all have bad seasons (2 years ago, the LA resorts got less than 50 inches all season)

if tuition is a factor like you said, LA colleges are out of the question.

USC - $48,000

LMU - $42,000

UCLA (out of staters) - about $40,000

not to mention the redic cost of living we have here. TUESDAY IS 9$ BEER NIGHT!!!

Uh..

you forgot to mention ANY csus..

Northridge, Dominguez hills, Fullerton, San Bernardino, LA, etc etc.

muuuch more affordable.

Cerro Coso Community College in Mammoth lakes. There is student housing, but ild just get a job with the mountain and live in employee housing. Way cheaper. My roommate does online classes through there. If you plan on staying in CA it is definitely a decent option. Just get your drivers license out here asap and then wait a year and apply to CSUs/UCs CSUs are around 3000 a year once you are in state and UCs around $9000

I don't know how you are getting your numbers, but UC's and CSU's are considerably more expensive than that. Even for in state. More in the range of 15k to 25k. Tuition alone wasn't even that cheap.

i pay about 1500 per semester (3k a year) at sac state. Books up that figure to about 4500.. but.. whatev.

go look at princeton review man.

College of the Siskiyous is in Weed, CA. Yes the town is called Weed, and it's close to Mt. Shasta, but tahoe and mammoth dominate lil ole shasta.

im at chico st. and i can get from my front door to the sugar bowl and boreal in about an two hours ... squaw and alpine like an extra half hour... i do it about everyweekend not bad at all

theres even some high elevation backcountry spots about an hour away

not to mention mt shasta is only 2 hours in the other direction....

kinda far away from mammoth, but i bet you have more fun in chico

you must be haulin ass to make it in 2 hours from chico... i always hear its like 3+ hours from boreal ussually.

yeah... it might take longer if theres snow on the road (naturally) but there are a bunch of little short cuts that take off like 45 minutes of "mapquest" time

I love the gift shop in Weed, CA

I love Weed!!!!!.........CA

I would Def hit up a community college in a ski town if money is important, Jr. College doesn't cost shit. I pay like maybe a grand per semester, books included. Maybe a little less. And that's for 18 units.

Go to Tahoe or Mammoth for sure, Big Bear would be cool for the skiing, but not as cool as Mammoth or Tahoe by any means, and theres nothing to do there, and its straight tweakerville.

can't believe no one has mentioned UNR, even though it's in Nevada. Legit college and one of the closest to skiing. If you want a good mixture of a big college, fun, close skiing, and not being stuck in a small expensive town then check out UNR in Reno. It's fairly close to mammoth and 35-45 mins away from some of the sickest resorts in Tahoe. There's also tons of people you can meet here both in and out of school that ski like it's their job.
www.unr.edu

shit, i didnt know that there was this many sac people on herei go to hs herebut i was thinkin about davis cuz its an extra 15 minutes for the mtns
