College Degrees

First off, this isnt a "tell me what to do with my life" thread..

I went to school last year for a marketing major with a minor in graphic design/video production. Seeing as that field is over crowded and not much for job opportunities, i decided to take a year off and try to figure something else out..

with that being said, I am just wondering what some of you guys are getting degrees in and what you are intending to use them for/in..

any suggestions or information you care to share about your degree would be appreciated.

thanks

i'm at clown school, i am a pie throwing major. plan on using it in the circus one day, if i work hard enough

i am currently 6 months away from a criminal justice degree

at first i was looking into being a fish cop, but anything in law enforcement intrigues me

i was in a media studies degree that I didn't really like so I'm dropping that and taking a year off because it's probably leading nowhere

I'm probably going to go to a film program next year for a degree that I'll probably really like but will still lead nowhere

such is life

last semester of civil engineering ends dec 17 for me...stoked to not spend 25 hrs/day in the engineering lab studying!

plan to make monnies making culverts, channels, bridges and shiit

I"m just about done with my Associate's in CAD/CAM (CNC Programming and Drafting), because I don't apply myself enough to be a real mechanical engineer.

Biology pre-med, hoping med school works out otherwise i would have wasted 4 yrs of my life. But I got some back ups if it doesn't work out.

do what your good at. if your good enough at it, it doesn't matter how many other people are doing it too. my brother is in pharmacy school gettin ready to make mad dough, so if you can do that (i can't) go for it. he's gonna be making 100+k (lawl +k) when he graduates. i'm a business major, so i guess i'll do whatever pays me, and open my own business at some point, if thats possible

I went to University of North Dakota for commercial aviation. I loved the parties but hated the work...so i left after my first year. This summer i plan to attend ATP flight school in San Diego CA...wayy beter than college and Ill have seniority at the airlines over the kids I went to school with.

Right now my major is international affairs, which I hope to intern for an ambassador and work my way up the ranks with.

I may, on the other hand, switch my major to either business or economics with the hopes of working for an investment firm (i.e. bane capital) with some of the connections I have, but who knows.

doing a double degree in Law & Education. When i graduated from high school, i wanted to do an easy arts degree and make my education a breeze. but there's no set job path and no prospects. therefore i chose law and education. both are guaranteed jobs anywhere in the world. so make a good decision for the long term future for the best interest of yourself ! Stick it out and you will get rewarded. At the end of the day, we all want to be doing what we enjoy and love. I'm graduating soon and everyone i know is applying for jobs/have jobs lined up for next year. Financial security is important regardless what anyone says. No matter what we all want to get the 'dream job' and make bank

Took an earth sciences course focusing on geo-physics and geotechnical engineering. Hate my job now and may go back to school for environmental engineering.

i heard a certain "Evan" who spends a lot of time on here is also on this "Clown school", but i think he's majoring in pie eating instead of throwing ...

im about to begin my bachelor thesis in international management. its such an interesting course. and ive just finnished my apprenticeship as a forwarding agent.

looking forward to getting my master in 3 years XD

I double majored in Accounting and Finance with an IT minor so I got my 150 hours to write my CPA exam. Now I'm working as an Accountant in Chicago.

I think liberal arts degrees are underrated. People always ask you shit like, "what are you going to do with an english major!" Just because a major isn't vocational training doesn't mean it's useless. That door is always open.

This is true - liberal arts degrees have been getting shat on a lot recently because, for some reason, people don't understand that you're not learning for a career in philosophy or art history or whatever, you're learning skills that are infinitely more important than the shit you learn in an econ degree... you can teach a new employee how to read graphs and shit but you can't teach them how to think/write/problem solve etc.

I am currently a marketing major, but just like you I realize now how overcrowded the field is and how little I am interested in it any more. Wanting to graduate on time, I looked into switching into another major in the business school. I am in the process of switching from marketing to supply chain management. there are tons of jobs in the field, and I am lucky enough to go to Penn State which has the number 1 undergraduate supply chain program. i even have a supply chain internship lined up for this summer and i havent even officially changed majors. if your school has it, i would look into it. i know i will get a job right out of college, and everyone is looking for supply chain majors right now.

dub major in biology and history

planning on med school or physicians assistant school. leaning more towards PA school

education is a tough field to get into right now, at least from what ive heard from recent graduates. Sure, there's tons of jobs down south for 20 grand a year, but not a lot of people are willing to do that especially from up north.

planning to go to school and major in environmental policy/science. idk what im going to do with it but hopefully something to raise awareness of environmental problems and how they effect the ski industry. who knows, as long as i can do my part in preserving our environment so our sport can prosper i'll be happy.

thanks for all the legit responses. i really wasnt expecting to get that much at all...

its helped open up some ideas and will lead to more research on it.

I have a degree that warrants me to be an archaeologist....
Instead I make websites on my own and work in the marketing department at Copper.
The field is only over saturated if you don't strive to be the best at what you do.
If you aren't into any of the law/medical/business fields... I'd stick with what you are doing but switch it around. Graphic design degree with a marketing minor. Will make you really valuable to a lot of different companies and you will probably have way more fun than the people that have straight marketing degrees.
Nearly the entire department here comes from art backgrounds rather than business. We definitely think outside the box. The marketing director is currently in chicago handing out freeze dried snow cones and hot coco scented air fresheners.... Seems to be working better than expected.

ultimately, i'd like to do video production work, lighting or grip work.. but thats even smaller to get into..

and what you just said is like totally opposite from my line of thinking which is: i would think a company would like someone with a marketing major who is also skilled in graphic design or video editing/production work.. i feel like the two go hand in hand. but you would use the marketing aspect more so and then once you figure that part out, then comes the graphic design part.. know what i mean?

marketing degrees are mostly common sense and frankly i would rather hire someone who put the time in to learn a technical skill such as graphic design who has a knowledgeable base in marketing as well. go for the real major and minor in the common sense one if you want to.

If you want to work strictly marketing... then design isn't a bad thing to have on the side. I feel like you have a lot more to learn in a design degree than marketing though. As in it isn't that hard to get into marketing, but its pretty hard to get a legit design job in a marketing department. If you are a natural people person... marketing is easy to get into. I just personally feel like the design oriented positions in the marketing world are more rewarding/entertaining.
If you are looking for video production work, I know a lot of schools are starting to offer digital media programs. I went through that minor program at school and focused on documentary film making.. pretty neat.

bio majory, maybe med school. i like infectious disease stuff. I guess it would be cool to work at the CDC but you can't really ski down there can you?

I'm doing Economics and French with a minor in music. Grades > what your actual major is (in most cases)

i plan on going next year and majoring in petroleum engineering, civil engineering or environmental engineering.

I'm an international business major and minoring in german.
I want to work for a company who is looking to expand into the international market and I go to a german speaking country and research the culture and stuff so its a smooth transition into the market

PGA Golf Management at Penn State. Train to be a PGA Head Professional at a private country club/resort/public facility. Many Pro's become General Managers of the club once you are there long enough.

If you are a golfer (Handicap in single digits), then this is THE major for you. Work in the north, and get your winters off to go live/work wherever you want in the winters.

I am pretty stoked.

Prerequisites for Medical and Pharmacy school. 3.3 gpa so probably pharmacy school. Call me dr. steez

Bachelor of arts, majored in asian studies-japanese language and culture and almost minored in psychology, but said screw it when I found out I was 3 credits short at the last minute. with this degree I plan to go to japan, become japanese and become a translator sometime later. I also plan to go to grad school for either japanese literature or psyc, but a few years down the roaddon't do this if you want a specific job and a really good salary. try econ, marketing, comp sci, pre-med, law, engineering, etc
