Anyone else just not getting into any colleges this year? Fuck this shit. I have a fantastic ACT score and great extracurriculars, but I've barely gotten in anywhere. And the decisions aren't making sense. Why would I get rejected from a school that's just objectively not as good and has a higher admittance rate than a school I got wait listed at? I've gotten into some schools that I would be perfectly happy going to don't get me wrong, but admissions this year are absolutely fucked. Is this the trend this year or is it just me?
 
Find the most affordable convenient college. Unless you’re trying to be a doctor or something super specialized, don’t waste 50k a year on a bachelors

Of course that's always the plan, but I want (and kinda feel like I deserve) more options to choose from that I'm not getting rn.
 
Where'd you apply? Could you have overlooked something seemingly small in the application process? I honestly don't know much about admissions stuff, I did what was needed to get into a state college and that was good enough for me

All my friends who are seniors got fucked by the process from UC schools, idk not looking forward to that in two yrs
 
Honestly I most of the people I know got into their first choice. I’m going to SDSMT for engineering and I didn’t even think I had a shot but somehow made it in. As a back up I also applied to a school in Montana and got in as well, I even qualified for a 13k scholarship. I’m by no means a special candidate for schools and I’m not crazy into clubs or anything. I’d be interested to know who you applied to and what your scores/essay stuff was about.

A lot of schools lmao + Georgetown. The likelihood I missed something is so astronomically small as well, and almost none of my friends got into state schools, even the kids that are top 10 in my class.

Congratulations man. And yeah I'd like to think my essay was good I worked my ass off on it. And I did a bunch of volunteering and shit in my community and had a few good internships.

Same. It should be mostly back to normal in 2 years, but admissions to the UC's have always been a little fucky for instate kids. Which is I assume your situation

Congrats on getting in. All the colleges I applied to are above, I had a 35 ACT, 4.0 weighted GPA, and I wrote about how I improved my public speaking skills through my volunteering. By far the weakest part of my application was my GPA

My brother goes to SDSMT. Pretty easy to get in, but the academics are hard! He's taking CS (freshman) and already half of his class dropped out. But if you survive you're pretty much guaranteed a job!
 
I got rejected by most of my schools and now I have to go to college in NC. I still get to work at my home mountain so I guess thats a plus

That sounds kinda fucky tbh. Also, the acceptance rate at the schools you listed are pretty low, not trynna be a debbie downer but is a 4.0 weighted gpa enough for em? What's your class rank?

I applied to University of Montana in Missoula as an out of state resident and also got offered a 13k scholarship. It's still too expensive to go but it's nice that they care.

Undergrad admissions are fucky. There are all sorts of reasons that factor into admissions, plus covid threw programs for a loop. Just pick a school that has a cool culture, do your homework, and you'll succeed. Businesses don't really care about which undergrad program is best.

Experience is what matters, anyway. Person A who went to a state school and had a relevant internship looks way better on a job app than person B who went to a prestigious private school and worked at the coffee shop. If you really wanna stand out, go to grad school.

Yeah the rates are low but even on the higher end I'm not really getting in. And 4.0 is on the lower side but it's definitely high enough. My class rank is 54 of 331 somehow.

Yeah that's very true. The only problem is I have absolutely no idea what I want to do so I gotta figure that out in the next few years.
 
Admissions this year are fucked. I got a ton of merit aid at all my safeties but am being waitlisted or denied everywhere else. Same is happening to all of my friends. My extracurriculars, grades and sat are all pretty good for the most part. Its just how it is during covid.

holy fucking supplementals dude. I applied to like 10 and I thought that was a lot of writing...

Anyways record admissions this year for most schools, especially upper echelon. I reckon Stanford/Harvard is down to 1% acceptance rate this year tops due to sheer volume of admissions.
 
Top 15 MBA programs were the same this year. Everyone anticipates it will be the most competitive year since 08-09 when the Great Recession hit.

Gotcha. I've just been here because my masters is online for the last year. That might change with my graduation and getting a job somewhere. Applying for jobs in the area though too. But yeah normally summers and then holidays to see the gf/rents.

Area is pretty dope. Skiing is good for the Midwest. Short season though. I'd suggest getting into climbing. Season is long and its Not often you get to live 20 minutes from world class granite climbing.

Lol I got into UW (51k a year at that time) and they offered me a "generous" 3k scholarship. I didn't do quite as good as OP in highschool but 3k was kind of an ego blow. I've since learned my brain is smoother than Alaskan powder spines

Yeah it was a grind and fucking sucked. This year Boston College was like a 5% admit rate. I should've gotten in there total bullshit.

Honestly the UC’s and Cal states are ridiculously inconsistent as far as admissions go. I was smart, but I honestly wasn’t that great of a student in HS, and I applied to a lot of schools from both the systems and so did a bunch of my friends. I remember my counselor telling me to not even bother applying to UCSB because he’s never seen a student get accepted. I ended up being the only person to get into Santa Barbara, but got rejected from a lot of the others. My homie who was our valedictorian of a giant ass graduating class got into most of the places I didn’t but got rejected at sb and cal poly, and a lot of friends didn’t get into any of them.

Honestly wouldn’t be surprised if the UC admissions dept. is just a team of monkeys who throw darts at a board to determine who gets in.

Take the year off and do lambda school or something and re apply next year

UC admissions have been awful for literal decades. My bio teacher was a legacy at UC Davis and got straighup rejected, but got into UCLA

That’s true, I’m used to short ski seasons. I live in MN. I’ve climbed before and have friends that do but just not my thing, maybe I’ll try to get into it again. If your ever in the area and want to ski lmk, I’m always looking for new people to ski with!
 
Probably more people than ever applying to college, seeing a degree as the only way out of being unemployed in whatever industry they were in that got canceled due to the rona, or 18 year olds who don't see any other options or are otherwise told that is their option. Also good grades, extracurriculars and whatever isn't always enough, since there's a huge amount of kids with exactly the same qualifications as you.

And the whole admission process is sort of stupid anyway. It would almost make more sense to change 12th grade into college tryouts, where you take somewhat standardized classes relevant to the major you intend to pursue and couple that with various teachers' assessments of if you're total fuckwad or not. You'd probably get less people going into majors that aren't for them, switching to something drastically different or dropping out all together with a 1 year of tuition bill.

lmao those are some tuff schools. why the hell are you an ns member lol? Where do you live? At NESCAC's it's a pretty small chance they'll hand out more than one acceptance if multiple apply in a close area to each other. What sort of extracurriculars? Are you an athlete? Granted it was covid but did you participate in all of the admission options like tours, interviews/seminars? Just cause you smart af and have a solid resume doesn't mean they'll hand it to you on a platter. What's the economic background in terms of where you live, low income etc? The college system is fuqed now a days. Just watched "Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal" on netflix and is eye opening.
 
Def factor in the $$$. I get it if you're trying to be a doctor or lawyer or something etc, you can get decent scholarships, or your family is set up enough to pay for most of it. But don't let the hype of a "good school" get you to take on more debt than you can handle.

It's pretty wild the way we give loans for so much money to people at that age. That's a big deal to take on that much debt regardless of everyone doing it. Also the colleges charge so much damn money because it's not that hard for people to take it out.

It just seems like you can get a decent education and solid social experience at a lot of colleges. If the one closer to home will have a pretty solid academic and social experience for massively cheaper, it might be worth looking into. Going to the best school might not always be worth the huge debt that comes with it.

Idk I have a ton of friends in various career paths with pretty crippling debt.

Not trying to be a downer, just be careful and really think it through. I get that it's hard to figure out what you wanna be and it's a crazy time. Good luck!

Yeah its been a crazy year. UCLA got over 150,000 applications this year. I also think more people are applying to the upper echelons of colleges because they don't have test scores that would discourage them from applying.

Yeah the education system's fucked. It's been stressed for so many decades that you basically HAVE to go to college that now a lot of kids don't even realize there's another path you can take, whether that be trade school or just entering the workforce right away.

Yeah I may have over extended myself there a little. I live in California, so most people are applying to UC's and definitely not the NESCAC schools. I've done a bunch of volunteering, clubs, sports, and internships. And I'm not low income but I am rural and apparently schools like that.

Yeah it's just tough due to the pandemic. Like that's why I applied to so many schools, because I wasn't able to tour any. And yeah of course I'm gonna choose the best college for my situation, I'd just rather have more options than I'm getting right now
