CNBC's Million Dollar Portfolio Challenge

hey dudes.

CNBC is having a portfolio challenge/stock picking challenge where you get $1,000,000 fake dollars to make your best possible portfolio using equities and currencies. First place wins a real 1 million dollars, second place gets a maserati and then they've giving away 10 vacations. It's a pretty big contest.
Anyway, it started yesterday and runs through November so you should enter, what do you have to lose?

http://milliondollar.cnbc.com/

i'm up $10,000 since yesterday so it's kinda fun, especially if you have a clue about stock markets. post up your best picks or just call me a big tool for doing this or idk, go sit on your thumb and rotate.

threads, looks like something i was supposed to do in economics class. might take a stab at it

ugh wish i had done this last year. I had picked corn at $33 a share and now its up to about $46. I had commodities called last year. I wanna call craft beer now as craft beer sales have gone up 13% last quarter. but the only stocks you can buy in craft beer is boston beer and craft brewer's alliance. Boston beer is alright but cba's financials aren't looking so hot.

stocks/shares/mutual funds/ETFs

and Tingas i don't think commodities are part of it, but you can "buy" SPDRs of gold and gold ETFs for example which i've done

Look at businesses that supply craft brewers. Pick the one that supplies other industries that are also improving and one in which their supply prices have gone up less than the average.

You are my new favorite member by far. And I am really impressed by your knowledge of finance. I am a finance major and currently taking courses on corporate finance and another about securities and debt instruments. So I will also take this challenge and hope my course work and my internship I had during the summer pays off!! haha

10/10

having financial software for work comes in handy sometimes.

thanks man! but don't be too impressed i really don't know much, i'm only a couple years out of school so i have boatloads to learn.
let me know how you do!

Hmmmm... does insider trading count if it's done with fake money for a contest? Anybody know?

I stared at three of those screens when I interned at Merrill Lynch.

Where do you work at?

eh places that supply to craft brewers are basically the same that supply to macro breweries. the macro trends far out weigh the micro.

i actually had a project exactly like this in 5th grade. they wanted us to spend a million dollars and document all of the spending and compile it into a report.

Should someone make a cult for this. People could ask for advice in it and we could post how we are doing.

Bloomberg terminal is cheating

jk but is the game measured in who has the highest return or is it measured in actual $ capital gain.

lol currency trading is blowing my mind. i stuck my 100k in the EUR/USD and was like what of it. the other 900k in each portfolio i actually have atleast a decent grasp of what im doing.

i did have to be a fatalist though and buy some gold funds. lolololol

did the same thing. i just don't know what i'm doing with currencies at all so i did the same exact thing.
the 900k is done decently well, or so i think at least, and I def have 2 gold funds in mine....hey the daily gains don't lie man!

Yeah this. I am going to do this as soon as I get home. I love stocks and playing without my money is a win just in case lol

im also going to gamble hardcore in my tech fund and buy NFLX as it goes down. IMO there is still value there and once they roll out their "content upgrades" i intend to hold a sizable number of shares.

but who knows, it could keep tanking and ill lose. hahaha

sorry for the post whoring, but does anyone know anything about an android app that would keep me in the game while im not at my computer?

yeah this is pretty rad. I'm definitely in. Thanks for posting this thread. 15 minutes left of trading, right?

well see that was my rationale for buying bank of america....i was like ok they just dumped 30,000 employees, stock fell even more, but that will turn around and be a good buy.
BUT, the contest ends in november and i don't think it will turn around much at all before then, so i dumped it and picked up some other better performing stuff.

also, yes trading ends at 4 p.m. Market hours in the U.S. are 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. EST.

hmm, yeah. You can't invest in anything remotely long term. I wanted to go for Philips magnavox since they've finally produced some freaking docking stations for the droid-- but I don't think they'll hit the market until the contest is over.

up 8k in 54 minutes of game time so far- cant wait for the Australian markets to open so I can make some more $$$

its easy, take the amount of money you have, type in a corporation you think is good, divide the total money by the amount it costs for one share, buy that many shares and see what happens. i know thats an awful way to do it but its fake money so why not try

just signed up, so stoked for stocks to open tomorrow.

seriously anyone wanna make this a cult?

where we can help each other and brag about our big wins.
