Closing on a powder day

So yesterday I went to closing day at Schweitzer mountain and there was around a foot of fresh in some spots on the mountain. Has anyone else's mountains closed on a powder day it just doesn't make sense when mountains close with the amount of snow they still have.

loon NH closed yesterday and it was snowing half the day. they got an inch over night and on friday night they got 5 inches... east coast weather

ya cannon had pretty much the whole mountain open including some glades. East coast weather huh

Was just about to make this thread..

Anyway, i think mountains/hills need to make last minute descisions, which would be hard because they need staff and would've told them that the mountain is done

Here in the Alps, people simply just don't show up after easter. Only a few resorts stay open after easter, it sucks! I'm a shaper in Scuol, Switzerland, and we took down our park in whiteout conditions. We have enough snow to easily stay open until may, even with crazy warm conditions. It's slightly depressing, but the resort would basically be hemorrhaging money if we stayed open.

Basically this. You stop getting destination visitors - no more lift ticket or food and beverage revenue. The only people left riding are season pass holders. You don't get any day-to-day revenue from them and they spend far less at F&B outlets, so the resorts aren't able to cover operating costs and lose money for every day they stay open, particularly on weekdays. The vast majority of people just stop thinking about winter at this time of year and move onto other activities.

all of the vail resorts are on national forest land and therefore aren't allowed to stay open after a certain day. I assume many other resorts are in the same position

I ski Kimberley and we had like 20cm for our staff day (day after closing day) and it was the same when I hit up Fernie for closing weekend. They got 57cm over the weekend.

9" fresh, wind blown powder, with some blue skies. Outta 28 last days I've experienced here in steamboat, I'd rate it as the best conditions ever for final day. Not ready to call it just yet, Ski safari, with Squaw, Mammoth, and Bachelor til mid May. How's the park looking up there in Bachelor?

Same here, probably saw you actually, the morning was great but it got dense and wet in the afternoon, I have heard that Schweitzer closes for insurance reasons though

first time in years red has closed without it being a powder day.. pretty weak march though and not a lot of cover left after our staff day so i guess it would be for the best

i heard that in order to stay open any longer, the insurance would just cost too much and they wont make any money

whitewater got 58cm closing weekend. the weekend before it was sunny and hot spring skiing. there was also a bowl... it was great
