Climbing skyscrapers with no harness

these two dudes are insane. i wanted to throw up just watching the video, i cant even imagine climbing that.

There's not really anyway those guys could set up a harness, also i feel like the way up is not as sketchy as the way down

Nothing about that looked remotely challenging from a climbing perspective. It was just the same very easy move over and over again. Not impressed.

Why don't you go do it then?

I never thought I was afraid of much until I had to climb the huge rock-wall at my school. Heights are my weakness for some reason.

I think this would be fun as fuck, really incredibly dangerous with zero room for fucking up. I feel like that would be the coolest feeling ever, kinda like wing suiting but even more dangerous in a sense.

I've done my fair share of climbing on rooftops, but that made my palms sweaty. Forget that.

Big guy over here watch out

Just pointing out the obvious. I've climbed a tremendous amount of rock and ice and the moves these guys are doing while climbing this crane are something that anyone could do. I really don't see the what the big deal is with these Russian crane videos.

I completely agree. you don't have to be tough to realize that anyone can do that. There are some crazy people to balance on cranes and shit which I would never do, but taking a liesurely stroll to the top of a tall building really is all good fun.

Then go make your own video then. Put up,or shut up.

i think you're missing the point somewhat

Yeah cause everyone has an empty sky scraper to climb where they live.

I agree it isn't hard at all. Climbing a crane like that is nothing more than a jungle gym (or whatever you call it), just bigger and taller. The challenge is dealing with the height, which some people find scary and some people have no problem with at all.

Exactly. Climbing skyscrapers or cranes in the US gets one arrested. The things I have done climbing, both roped and unroped, make the whole crane climbing thing look like child's play (which it is). No harm in it, but this whole sensationalizing it as crazy is ridiculous.

One time I kicked a bull in the nuts and when it turned around I bitched slapped it.

Wrong. That shit is useless and will result in injuries if used like that.. If you fall and your anchor is below you the forces generated from being caught statically would hurt you more than you can imagine

There are two answers to climbing that tower safely.

1.) Get a pair of lobster claws (basically what you see above, a master point, and two long slings you wrap around an anchor, secure, then undo the lower one and keep going higher) with the addition of a Yates screamer (or other shock absorber that's meant for static falls from people above the point of anchor) between the carabiner and the end of each sling, near your body. They look like this

or

2.) Just lead climbing the whole thing with slings and a carabiner at each convenient bar and just keep going. iFlip is right, from a climbing perspective this would be ridiculously easy to do. Its the balls it takes to solo it that makes it hard. However, it would be really, really easy to make this safe. Even falls on lead would all be clean because the tower is angled.

Going really in depth there huh? I've never had a fall on them, but would a 2-3ft static fall really hurt that bad. Im assuming the one that is clipped never goes below your waste.

I will say from experience from climbing trees when I was younger the same exact way, that you WILL get very painful bruises that are shaped just like your harness in all sorts of places that shouldn't get bruised, and that is on a clean, not twisted, or sideways fall that is in the prone/sitting position. Don't fall on static anything, it is not fun. If you fall and land say a little bit twisted or on your hip, it will violently whip you back into position and probably tweak core muscles and stuff. If you are leaning back, I hope you're flexible and can fold backwards. Not to mention the multiplied force you are putting into the anchor. Just don't do it. ever.

They make lanyards like that that aren't static for fall protection. I've used them before.

2-3 feet above your anchor is going to hurt very bad. That's going to end up being a 6ft fall onto a 100% static anchor....it will hurt very bad, and you actually have a decent chance of snapping your spine.

People die from falling on static anchors. Not something you think of dying on while rock climbing, but it is a possibility.

Also anybody who thinks this is crazy look up Alex Honnold. He free solo climbs rocks that are much much harder than this and just as tall.

Wait... You used a harness while climbing trees when you were younger? Who does that?

Op kind of sucks at making thread titles though. Considering there are people who free climb the outside of buildings. Other than the height factor it's kind of a glorified jungle gym. And they used the stairs to get up the sky scraper.

Title should say something about climbing cranes which again has been done. Cool, I'd probably pee my pants, but not anything new.

1.) 45 feet is no joke

2.) I was setting up an anchor higher up in the tree to rappel from and make a leap-of-faith (which wound up being 32ft long) from. Needless to say I scared the shit outa my parents, jumping from a tree and shiz.

I get the whole it's not difficult thing (compensating?) But really I feel like the whole deal is the tiny margin of error. One missed step and youre fucked. That being said there are a lot of similar things, such as that one vid where the guy hangs off the top of the bridge by his buddies hand, that aren't difficult but are ballsy as fuck. And I don't think very many of us can make demeaning claims when we would never so the shit ourselves.

oh I was never saying I would do it haha....but there is much crazier stuff out there, that has a much smaller room for error. Some people are just crazy.

Makes my palms sweat everytime.

Not sure on how to embed video. But we'll worth the watch if you liked the OP

me and my brothers did that many years back and scared the shit out of my parents the fun part was climbing up the first time with no harness to tie the rope to the top
