Climbing Skins: Low cost, high value

Hey guys, I've seen a few posts here about which skins to buy, and thought that I would make you all aware of a relatively unknown company based out of Bozeman. Big Sky Mountain Products manufactures super high-quality nylon skins that you can buy online starting at $100. The skins have above-average glide, typical nylon grip, and super sticky glue so that they won't fail you deep in the backcountry on a cold day. The only reason the skins are so low-cost is because they are manufactured 100% in-house rather than being shipped across seas to complete the manufacturing process. ***Full disclosure***, I am personally affiliated with this organization, however, I only started working with them after using and loving the skins for the last few years. I am a ski mountaineer that spends tons of time deep in Montana's Beartooth Wilderness, and Big Sky Mountain Products have been my skins of choice since 2016. Below I've attached some photos of where our skins have brought me recently.

Saw this recently on blister and am thinking about picking up a pair. Look good.

The Elephant in the Room

For those of you who have been jumping up and down with your hand in the air, trying to get a word in edgewise to say that “don’t these look awfully similar to BCA’s Magic Carpet and Climbing Skins Direct’s products?”

Yep, they sure do. Like, almost identical. The BSMP standard tip and tail connectors are the same ones that you’ll find on BCA’s skins, and the glue and plush seems just about identical to the older Magic Carpet skins.

As far as I’m concerned, that’s a great thing. My partner has abused a pair of BCA Magic Carpets for the last few years and they’ve held up wonderfully with nary a whimper. These BSMP skins share a lot of DNA with those great BCA skins, and that’s a very good thing. And as a bonus, the BSMP skins are far less expensive.
