Class A/Commercial Driver License

How many people on NS have a driver's license that allows them to drive commercial trucks? I've always been fascinated by trucks since I was a little kid, but I ended up getting a summer job as a driver assistant at a beer distributor and it has reinvigorated my fascination with the trucking industry. I really want to get my Class A license, but as an Accounting/Finance major, I can't see a California Class A license helping me make money beyond next summer. Too bad truck school is about $1200 to $1400 and three weeks. If it was half that I would love to get a CDL and my own route next summer with the beer distributor.

Back to the thread topic- do any of you guys have your CDL and would it be worth me taking three weeks out of my summer (plus a little over $1200) to earn it for that short amount of time? I live in a huge agriculture area, and some of the growers hire college students over the summer to drive routes hauling crops from the fields to warehouses, which I've heard can pay out well. Overall, I really want to drive a tractor trailer for a little while, just to check it off my bucket list, should I say fuck it and go for it, or cave the cash I'm making now and just ride around in it and deliver beer throughout this and next summer? Feel free to post up your rigs, too.
 
I got my AZ( Ontario, Z is my airbrake indorsement). Took me almost two months, but its worth it. I got some pretty good work from it, also got my heavy equipment tickets with it as well. My course was a lot more comprehensive then your sounds like. I had skid pad training, flatbed, float, and heavy haul training.

If your used to driving standard vehicles, then it's a cake walk. Heck a girl who never drove stick in her life passed the final. Learned on internationals, a Kenny, a Mack, and an old Pete. Check the rigs first, I know down south they teach people on those semi auto volvos, DON'T do that. Get used to running eaton fuller trannies.... that is most likely what your gonna see.
 
Yeah, I wouldn't need much beyond just the Class A and maybe an air brake endorsement. The company I work for now has all auto Kenworths, which blows when the trailer is empty because you can't skip gears. I just really wish I had the time to get it and make good use of a Class A.
 
Really?? Kenny with an Allison? Your going to have to get your airbrake endorsement. If your truck has a trailer it's gonna have airbrakes.
 
Yeah all the trailers have air brakes. Trucks are honestly so fucking cool, too bad I'm going to college and don't have the time to really get use out of my commercial license.

Talk to C.Faller about the CDL. If you've got the time & money it never hurts to improve your credentials. Do the tank and hazmatt endorsement too while you're there.
 
I spent some time down there in the fall researching & connecting. It's like the wild west. Crazy how towns have been bolstered to accommodate all the workers.
 
Yeah it's nothing for the hotels that we stay at to be almost completely booked by us and our third party companies. Some people love us and some absolutely despise us. It's nothing in West Virginia to have state police escort us to our location so nothing happens. Those people are nuts down there
 
I work for AriZona Beverage Co. and I know that they either help pay for their workers who want to work towards a CDL or they pay the whole thing. Possibly talk to your boss, but I doubt it because it's only a summer job and it wouldn't really help him in any way.
