Chronically unstable shoulder

dislocated my shoulder pretty bad a couple times this winter to the point where it literally would pop out randomly. I sneezed and dislocated it once... but anyways, i went to see a specialist and he said it's "chronically unstable" and i'm gonna need surgery and will be out for the rest of the season. anyone ever have this problem? or know how long recovery is or if i'll need physiacl therapy or how long that is? any help helps.

thanks

I have dislocated my shoulder 3 times in the last 11 months. I postponed my surgery until after ski season and currently just tape my shoulder. Feelsbadman :(

i did it 9 times in the last 14 months from skating, skiing etc. it just didn't start getting bad until this year aha. it needs to be taken care of, it sucks

Yeah my shoulder dislocated around 10+ times once in my sleep ha. 3-4 months recovery with physical therapy.

Do every stupid fucking exercise of the physical therapy and you be golden

It's good your getting surgery. This girl I knew had that problem. Shit would pop out all the time= no good.

It sounds like you'll be missing the rest of the season honestly. Depending on how soon you get it done and how long the season goes/ how risky you want to be.

You'll more than likely need pt.

Joinin the bunk shoulder club though. We meet in nsg on sundays at 10am. My name is bob. But goodluck with everything. Def worth it to miss a little skiing to have the rest of your life in better condition.

i had mine worked on after a similar situation as you. surgery and recovery aren't that bad, way better then a knee. still need to rehab hard to streghten it post-op or you will continue to pop it out. mine doesn't really bother me anymore other then occasional pain.

Do you do any kind of strength training or conditioning? Last year I separated my AC joint (there is still a funny bump where the joint is) after catching an edge on a rail. After taking about 6 weeks of rest and light band work I started going to the gym. I do lots of overhead stuff and lots of heavy stuff (205lb squat snatch, close to 500lb deadlift etc.) and have had no shoulder trouble at all. I probably don't know what I'm talking about, but I figure if you build up muscle around there, you will probably have fewer issues?

Did some one say chronically?!?!?

my orthopedist said I won't be using my arm or a while after surgery. I just went in for an MRI and ct scan and apparently my shoulder is pretty messed up. I'll be in a sling for a while and cant do much

Oh for sure, but once it's better or starting to get better....And go hardcore on physio. I didn't and I think I got away with it, but absolutely do it!

I've dislocated my shoulder around 13 times, and I went to see a chiropractor to help out...I don't want to talk down surgery, but there is a lot more to your shoulder than just the ligaments. You're body is a system of subsystems that interplay with each other. You may fix the ligaments with surgery, but there is still a lot of other work you gotta do to strengthen your shoulder

Basically, my chiropractor told me that you're ligaments should never take that much stress. You're muscle is a huge player in stability, those "stupid" physio exercises suck and seem pointless but they are really awesome. What happens when you dislocate your shoulder is your shoulder pops before the muscles can contract, and so you have to train you muscles to be quicker by those exercises and high reps of them

Also try standing/sitting up straighter in general, you're back muscles can get real weak by the sitting in classes/standing hunched and what not and that all relates back to your shoulder.

While skiing, tape it up and brace it up, it can't hurt and provides extra padding and eliminates out of range motions. Also, try to teach yourself safe falling techniques to absorb shock and allow stronger, more muscular parts of your body to take the hit

When I was younger, I dislocated my shoulder 8 or 9 times. I was one dislocation away from having to get surgery they said, but it never happened. I consider myself lucky

I had the same exact thing man...it hurt so bad and i hated it. But i just powered through it and lifted weights and eventually got it strong again and now its pretty solid, dont really have any problems anymore. But trust me it would pop out like 3 times a week, sometimes just when i turned around quickly..shit sucks.

chronically unstable means your shoulder is hurt real bad and you can get a pot card because of it. jeez you guys are dumb.

i'm a chronic penis tugger

i enjoy weiner tug, usually of my own penis though

i can relate, because my roommate last year had an unstable shoulder as you described, i drove him the doctors a bunch, he broke his clavical splling dont care

I Have the same exact problem.

6 dislocated shoulders and 2 surgeries later my shoulder still feels like shit.

only my right shoulder but my doctors say both my shoulders are loose.

everytime i dislocated it i was in a sling for roughly 6 weeks or until it didnt hurt anymore.

physical therapy i only did after surgery its a good idea. roughly 2 months. 5 months after surgeries

Do you have any sort of link the specific exercises?

This thread makes me cringe. My left shoulder is so bad that I can barely function. It hurts nearly every day. I venture to say I've popped it out over 50 times in the past few years. Any time it goes over my head it's out. Twice I've popped it out so bad that I needed a doctor to put it back. I know its a bit passed excercise to fix it but any excises that might make the going easier would be nice.

And before anyone says to get the surgery, I know. But money is a huge issue especially with no insurance and having to be out of work after the surgery.

holy shit dude. that sounds real bad aha. I dunno if there are any exercises out there that could fix that since it's so bad, but this just happened to me so i don't know quite yet. good luck with it though

over the past 3 years I have had 9 shoulder separations and easily over a hundred dislocations. it was to the point were i would wash my hair and it would slip out. What made it worse was that I had what called multi-directional instability so I would not only dislocate backwards but also forwards. I went under the knife at the end of august to get it fix and my labrum sewn back together. They had to reshape a lot of the interior of my shoulder as well as adding for anchors and lifting my shoulder approximately 2 centimeters higher. Im still doing therapy for a few more weeks and haven't been able to ski at all this winter. It really sucks to do but your gonna hafta bite the bullet and do it at some point. The surgery is wicked easy, its the rehabilitation that is by far the worst. Pm me if you have any questions

Broke the same collar bone 6 times, its healed at he moment and it's 2 inches shorter than my other collarbone. They aren't level.

i have a separated shoulder, did it jan 2nd, doctor said about 2 or 3 weeks, physio said 4, its been 6 and i can still ski but i havent been back to volleyball yet (university team)
