Chris "Uncle E" Ernst

I used to support Chris Ernst as a play by play commentator during the X-Games because he is the father of skiercross and a pretty darn good skier during his day. He's created an image for himself named Uncle E and I think ESPN needs to replace him as a play by play commentator.

I tweeted at ESPN_Action "Please consider replacing Chris "Uncle E" Ernst as a play-by-play commentator during skiing telecasts"

Seriously, Luke Van Valin would be a much better voice. He cannot think on his feet fast enough to keep up with the action which leads him to say really boneheaded things. It's subpar television. If enough people tweet this...I dunno it might change something.

i would actually agree more if you were talking about mike douglas. they both can recognize a double, without specification as to what kind, the rotation, and if it was a mute or japan grab. luke does a much better job and knows background more relevent to most skiers

Yeah I agree with this. Luke knows his stuff and would make the announcing better. I also think it would be sick if they brought Colby West on to be his partner or another member out of the skiing world. I think that would add a little bit to the comp

Totally agree. Uncle E, although still a stud in his own right, just wasn't doin so hot tonight. I would definitely support Luke and Colby working it

Any one catch the part in womens slopestyle where uncle E called sarah burke "sarah brown"? Then he tried to play it off like "Im in so much grief I cant even get the name right." It was an awkward moment

this thread happens every year....its prolly not gonna change. "these are sideways flips" made me lol almost as much as "TRIPLE???" 2 years ago on the dub 16

did anyone watch the pow awards last night? luke and colby were funny, but hard to watch at times. There were definitely some cringe worthy moments.

I personally didn't either. Luke and Colby were hilarious at the Powder Awards, and judging from Luke's commentating during the Dew Tour I think they would be better suited for XGames. My personal opinion on the matter.

He's an idiot. Sometimes he tries to pull off a southern accent. So awkward. Also, he is so cocky sounding. Sometimes I just want to tell him to shut the hell up. I can only imagine mikes face during this. /rant

Not sure exactly who it was, but right after tom's second run somebody said tom put the fu in fun. So funny. can't wait to hear/see the replay. Otherwise yea horrible announcing. They try way too hard to make everything sound exciting. I can see it, I don't need you to tell me that a dub 10 is the same thing as doing 3 360s on my couch plus 2 flips. And never before have I heard of skiers doing "change-ups" on rails.

I cant stand the real world analogies "Tom Wallisch just basically jumped onto your kitchen countertop!"

you guys also need to keep in mind how many non skiers there are watching the event, how is some kid from alabama who has no interest in skiing supposed to know what a dub cork 12 mute is?

When Tom Wallisch hopped up on the wall - "That is like a Slam Dunk in Basketball!" I see where he was going but in agreement with his statement- No, that was not like a slam dunk.

Douglas is good to have around. Van Valin instead of Uncle E would be better. I like Uncle E, but he just isnt as articulate as Van Valin.

Yeah that Sarah brown moment was wicked awkward. If you watch the replay on Espn 3 in the commercial breaks Douglas and chris can be heard talking about and basically saying they hope we bought the "grief" explanation. It's embarrassing.

Looks like you have no idea what it is listening to the french commentators, they are just obnoctious. They say a lot of wrong facts, mixed up Jacob Wester with Phil Casabon in the second run, misnaming a lot of tricks, talking about the Frenchies and the superpipe every 5 minutes and the list goes on. I would have loved to listen to the ESPN commentators.I wont even bother to watch the superpipe just because of the commentators and the fact that there are actual french in there.

this has really made me see how ridiculous it is. They are also too obsessed with whether they will see a triple and talking about how so and so's rail game isnt their specialty.

they should get luke to do it for sure and definitely throw in another rider that is still on the scene.

agreed, the commentating was so bad. Luke would be able to put into way better words for other people to understand and not sound like a goon saying it

Listening to Luke commentate is like a teaching lesson. He explains whats going on and to someone who doesn't do the sport he explains the degree of difficulty cause its coming from a first hand experience. Much better.

i wonder how many times we'll hear about russ's dad giving russ part of his hamstring for acl surgery during big air from mr "E".

dude is a broken record. van valin should definitely be one of the announcers.

Agreed. Uncle E didn't contribute to the trick commentary really at all. I've always had a problem with Mike D on the xgames since he has somewhat of a conflict of interest going on. You could see it last night with Bobby Brown. The thing is - I like Mike D as a commentator, just not when I feel persuaded to like Sammy's run more than __________(insert any rider not sponsored by Salomon here). Just me? Lastly, the lack of "time" between each feature, combined with the technical nature of tricks now, made for pretty awful commentary.

It's just funny when you can hear VanValin's live announcing in the background calling out different tricks than Uncle E and Douglas.

Uncle E's a joke. I get that he's a "legend" in the skiing community, but he's way out of his element here and has no business commentating on park skiing.

I don't like Uncle E's sense of humor at all...he is constantly being negative. His assault on Russ and his outfit was lame, as were a number of other instances of awkward, trying to be funny but coming across as a cocky dick moments.

Nevermind the fact that he appears to be mostly clueless in terms of....everything. There really is no reason Uncle E should be apart of it. Hell, I'd prefer Mike D do the heavy lifting and let Sal handle the color/gaperish "ooooohhhhhhh!"

There is no question that as far as the ability to correctly identify tricks. convey the relative difficulty of said tricks, and to explain the nuances and to intelligently compare runs between competitors, Luke would be superior on every level. On top of the fact that Luke is more "technically" qualified, he's a hell of a lot more charismatic and his anecdotes about athletes, particular tricks, etc. are so much more relevant and actually enlightening.

"Eric Schlopy"... However it is a difficult job where making mistakes is inevitable, but I definitely support the notion towards Luke Van Valin.

i was watching this with my girl friend and when he said that i got up and walked into the kitchen and jump onto the counter-top just to show her i could do it. then we broke up like an hour later.

haha I think I remember them calling a Kangaroo flip a double backflip landing backwards one year

that's what I was saying in my first post. I've been tweeting at ESPN_Action. I'm asking them to consider replacing Uncle E
