Chiropractors

So I have multiple friends who I've been trying to get to start lifting. (As in barbell lifts Bench Squat Deadlift Overhead Press Cleans etc..) because for me and everyone else I know who has done this sort of thing these lifts (with GOOD FORM being key, not talking ego lifting) are best for building good core strength and actually preventing back pain because a strong core and posterior chain support the spine. (keep in mind muscle soreness and back pain are two very different things).

Those who I have been lifting with for a while and those who I know started lifting recently (esp. during corona) have all gotten addicted to it. There is a group that just refuses to even give it a try though, citing back pain. The common denominator of this group is that they all go to a chiropractor. The chiropractor has them convinced that they are just too frail to lift or they can't because "something is out of alignment." Then I ask if they've ever gone to a real doctor about it and they say no. I try to explain that yea, sitting in a chair all day with bad posture is gonna give you back pain and the only way to stop that is to build a strong posterior chain, and if it's more serious than that they should go see a real doctor about it. (Would be less $ than seeing a chiropractor every week or whatever) It's not like they're crippled or anything. Their chiropractors have them convinced that if they try to do anything they'll snap their spine and the only solution is to never use their lower back muscles and keep coming in for "corrections". So they continue to have back pain because of inactivity, bad posture, and zero posterior chain or core strength.

Look, I've had bad back tweaks before, one from a car accident. I rested it, and was back to deadlifting and squatting in a week. The second from football where I got checked out by the team trainer to make sure I didn't actually damage my spine, was back in a couple weeks. Third one from eating shit skiing. Went to the actual doctor, got checked out, and was good to go in a couple weeks again.

I don't mean to just shit on all chiropractors, I'm sure it helps some people with real back issues and no other solutions. But when it's people I know who have been just fine, start going to a chiropractor (not always but usually at the recommendation of a mom or aunt) and all of a sudden have a "bad back" it makes me wonder what's really going on. I also have family members/friends with scoliosis and fused discs, various injuries and other back issues who never saw a chiropractor and swear that the only way to help the pain is to actually USE the supporting muscles and strengthen the back.

Thoughts?

their chiropractor must be a slimey bastard because no chiro i have ever gone to has told me or anyone i know that they are “too frail to lift”. thats the scummiest thing ive heard. i would see a physical therapist over a chiro at that point. PTs will not only correct the issue but also give you exercises to prevent it. also once i started lifting all of my back pain went away. truly having a weak core fucks over your back. it also improves your posture too

Yea its not the same chiropractor for all of them, that's just the common denominator for this group ive noticed. I don't think its the chiro saying outright they shouldn't lift, maybe its the family members. They just have this idea in their head that they can't lift because it will make their back worse. Maybe its not the chiro but some of their own psychological shit compounded by advice from dumbass really out of shape people IDK.

And yea, I always recommend they go to a sports med doctor or physical therapist if they're really concerned about injury. They never do.

I've had a great experience with a chiropractor- but less for the adjustment side of things and more for the pt side of things. I broke my back unknowingly a few years ago and a chiro is the one who actually suggested core exercise to relieve pain and reduce the chance of reinjury.

That being said, my chiro does suggest taking it easy with exercises that load the spine, and It makes sense to me. There are many ways to strengthen the core and back without compressing my shattered vertebrae, and doctors will naturally give conservative advice to cover their ass.

I still lift, no problem. I'm just more conscious of what I do so I don't accidentally end up in a wheelchair. Without the chiro I would be in much more pain, or worse.

Thanks for the response, beginning to think its probably the individuals and those surrounding them and giving advice more than the chiropractors...

I would see a sports medicine doctor versus a chiropractor but that's just me. One is a physician, and one is not. Chiropractors have their place but I have the impression that a lot think too much can be fixed by simply cracking your spine.

What do they even do? Cracking a joint to me isn't realigning it in anyway? I've always felt like they are a scam I can crack a knuckle and it sounds like progress but it's not doing anything.

I smoke crack

This, the type of doctor is called a physiatrist. They specialize in sports medicine and physical therapy/rehabilitation. Chiro's are notorious for quackery and can be quite harmful .

THEY ARE ALL FRAUDS TRUST ME MY FAMILY GOT SUCKED INTO THIS BULLSHIT. GO TO PHYSICAL THERAPY, OR EVEN YOUTUBE AND LEARN STRETCHING, YOGA, AND TECHNIQUE TO IMPROVE YOUR POSTURE AND DO THEM AT HOME.

ALL THESE MOTHERFUCKERS RUN THE SAME SCAM, THEY OVERCHARGE THE FUCK OUT OF INSURANCE COMPANIES, THEY COMMIT INSURANCE FRAUD AND RACK UP ALL THESE PHONY BILLS, RUN UNNESESSARY TESTS, AND ALL THIS SHIT.

THEY ALL THREATEN YOU AND TELL U THAT UR BACK IS SEVERELY FUCKED UP AND IF U DONT COME IN 3 TIMES A WEEK U WILL BE FUCKED UP AND ADDICTED TO PAIN KILLERS FOR LIFE.

trust me do u know how many times ive heard the same stories from these assholes is pseudoscience and they are all QUACKS AND FRAUDS!!!.

they all try to set u up on a schedule where u must come in 3 times a week, and then all the idiot does is a few minor adjustments with his tool that looks like a butt-plug and sends you on ur way (the appointment is usually 2-3 mins).

however, i did go to one chiropractor in texas when i lived there who i went to once a month that taught me legit exercises to do to improve my back, posture, coordination, movability, etc.

but again you can learn all this shit on youtube and do it in ur house

i went to a chriopractor from age 5-16. then a few different ones a few time from age 20-23

if u got any questions hit me up

If you go to a good chiropractor they wont be much different than physio. The real issue is that most people don't follow the advice given to them and think that 15 minutes of exercise a day is too much work. They think if they throw money at their problems they will just go away. If they followed the advice they'd typically be out of there in 6-12 weeks depending on the injury.

The problem is that most chiropractors won’t tell you to do any type of exercises or stretching at all that will improve whatever issue u have, and or show you things that you can do at home to improve whatever condition you may have. They just want u coming in 3 times a week for them to do their two little minute adjustment with that tool that looks like a butt plug. 99 percent of chiropractors are quacks and frauds that overcharge ur insurance companies run bogus tests and commit insurance fraud.

Mine showed me how fucked up my posture was, and exercises and stretches to fix it. She also helped me with trigger points to coordinate muscle control that I had lost post injury. I think a good chiro is closer to a physical therapist than someone who just folds you up and cracks your back.

I made the distinction of good and bad chiropractors. If you come across one that thinks you can't live a pain free life without them or they want to sign you up for acupuncture you can make the informed decision to not go with them during the first consultation. Those who are uninformed will eventually get conned, this applies to any aspect of life unfortunately.

This is the kind of thing I was wondering about. Recently talked to a dude I was trying to get to come lift with me and he said he couldn’t because his “pelvis is out of alignment/asymmetrical and he has to go to the chiropractor to help it” which I know isn’t true because dude has a normal gait and if your pelvis is asymmetric you’re gonna walk noticeably different. I asked why he hadn’t gone to the real doctors for something so severe and debilitating as a malformed pelvis, and he looked offended. That conversation was the reason I originally made this post

i had the exact same issue or similar. one of my hips was slightly higher than the other one, and if affected my posture. like unless ur going somewhere where they are doing something with some type of machine that is only in their office to fix whatever issue u have or u need surgury, ur wasting ur time with these physical therapists and chiropractors. a lot of the same stuff u can do at ur house by urself or if u need a homie helping u.

if u are really keen on fixing whatever issue u have shop around, go to a few different physical therapists or chiropractors, see what the vibe is and go from there. all im saying is these ppl LOOOOOOVE TO RACK UP BULLSHIT CHARGES ON UR INSURANCE, AND IF U GOT GOOD COVERAGE THEY WILL MILK THE FUCK OUT OF U, they will run tons of xrays, mris, spinal x ray scan, and a ton of very other procedures that are costly shit

most of the time u can literally youtube exactly what u need to fix ur issue and do it at home
