China gets the Winter Olympics

Favourite quote from the BBC report... (http://m.bbc.co.uk/sport/winter-olympics/33730477)

"Beijing and Almaty (kazahkstan) were considered outsiders when the 2022 bid race opened two years ago."

No fucking shit they were outsiders. An abundance of snow is generally useful for these sort of things

I'm actually glad it went to China. Almaty doesn't need the massive debt and crumbling infrastructure that goes with the Olympics. China can deal with it.

As for the course, if they need to be shipping/making all the snow for it and if the weather is hot then I wouldn't expect any huge features.

Biggest step down ever?

I don't know much about either of their climates, but doesn't kazhakstan get a lot of natural snow in the mountains? I picture skiing/snowboarding/nordic/outdoor events looking like windells right now but more artificial

What could come from this is snow making advances. I was not aware of this before doing some research for an article but there is snowmaking availble now whic does not need freezing temperatures. Snow can be made at any tEmp. At the moment the output is pretty low for the size of the setup but think what china could maybe produce by throwing money at it. Could be a pretty big deal and showcase how winter resorts could potentially run as snow decreases and temps riSe.

Olympic venues are getting more and more wacky and in our opinion they should use existing/proven spots again like SLC, Japan, Turin but it's spreading the good word of skiing all around the world which is a good thing .. hopefully this will help push snowmaking innovations and the need to clean up the air over there and focus on environmental standards

TC went to China & South Korea this past February to get ahead of the game to scope out venues for the Wizard Tricks event that will be introduced in Beijing. 20+ minute mini movie coming out in October with Andy, Will, LJ and Leo T. -jm

HYYYPE!!

After the last Bejing Olympics, I actually have pretty high faith in China to make some legit man-made snowy facilities.

I have no doubt in China to pump as much as is needed, if not more snow than we could imagine to make this an epic Olympic games.

Actually, with the amount of scrilla China will no doubt spend on this, and the new things happening in snowmaking, I actually foresee something pretty exciting for slopestyle and big air, I'm thinking inner city stuff and insane features for the slopestyle!

inb4 the snow all turns black after a few days. they're going to have to like paint it white or bleach it or something.

I'm glad the winter olympics are spreading around. Yeah sure we could go back to proven spots but to get snow sports out there is pretty rad. Plus shaun white air and style in the birdnest is fucking huge.

It really says something that only authoritarian governments want the olympics anymore.

Sure does. The looming debt simply overshadows any exposure the host can get, and taxpayers don't want to pay for it. I feel like the olympics are on a slow road to irrelevance.

Is this "any temp snowmaking" occurring indoors or outdoors? Because I'm positive you can't make snow in any temp. Sure, low positives, with no humidity, but not ANY temp.

Yeah it's outdoor. I did not know about it at all but it's pretty interesting. They use a vacume to create te snow but that is about as muc as I know. Check it out

Other countries like Norway and Sweden wanted it to, it got too expensive for them though

Exactly. The price the the winter olympics cost isn't worth it, unless you are a government trying to prove something by putting on a show.

My visa is good for 10 years I'm going!

We went to the resort where they are going to have slope (I think) and it was cold and windy. I asked if this was normal and the answer was yes. It was the coldest I had been in a long time.

But China was really fun and I want to go back. We ate alot of interesting stuff.

Was there a lot of snow?

Not really. I dont remember snow banks in the parking lot of the resort.

Seams like its a good place to make snow with the cold temps.

Only concern I would have is the cold and the wind.

80 foot jump with 60mph winds and FIS/IOC not delaying the comp

=

Someone getting hurt

Phoenix park in Korea will be a sick venue.

Yeah good point, I mean really if you have cold temperatures and you install the most massive snowmaking system ever known to man, natural snow is irrelevant.

I'd bet China could pull off a pretty darn impressive snowmaking system.

calling it now: east coast and midwest skiers dominate bc used to shitty conditions

and a weather manipulating system.. There will be zero wind and sunshine every day..

I lived in Almaty last year and I was fairly disappointed that they didn't get it. Almaty is killer and weather is almost identical to SLC. They have a lake that provides nice dry snow and they have a great ski season from November to May/June. The Tien Shan get plenty of natural snow and the Tien Shan mountains are awesome. During the Soviet times it was a playground for members of the politburo. Not trying to preach, just loved it there and wish they got it. The mountains are taller there than in Utah and it is at MOST twenty to thirty minutes to the resort.

I mean I don't feel the olympics will ever be "irrelevant". It is the pinnacle of sporting events and has been for a pretty damn long time. They are so fucking expensive though that I think they are just going to start coming back to old venues and reusing the old stuff to bring the cost down. Im personally really hoping that Salt Lake gets the 2026 winter olympics. Id be so fucking stoked if that happened.

They've already got that covered - they use a high tech method of ejecting various forms of carbon into the air too effect the environment from China all the way down to the Great Barrier Reef. They even made it so there's a cool fog in Beijing a lot of the time.

It will be fine. China does a pretty good job of controlling the weather these days, they'll just pop a bunch of silver iodide in the atmosphere for a month beforehand and it'll dump.
