Chest Injury?

Wondering if someone could clear this up for me.

Maybe 4 seasons ago I really fucked my chest, by hucking out a back flip really fast, without warming up.

It felt like I tore/ damaged something right on my sternum, and for a day or two it really hurt when it got knocked or I breathed in deeply, but got better and better- except for when I coughed/ sneezed, when it felt like I was going to die, which carried on for most of the season.

Now I've done it again, this time by dropping cliffs in some warmed up sticky pow, landing backseat, and getting my arms pulled back, hard, stretching out my chest, and doing the same thing as the last time I explained. This time though, I skiied again a week later, and sort of did it again. It's pretty bad now..

Anybody know exactly what I've done, so I can look it up?

Reasons I haven't been to a doctor, either times:

- I'm poor

- I'm lazy

- I'm assuming the doctor will just say 'take it easy', because it's not like they can replace my chest with another one

- I can ask NS which knows everything. gogo!

sounds like a bruised sternum....
i had the exact same thing some years back when i fell off a swingset, straight onto my back...
first month or so laughing and coughing was a real pain, then it healed and its perfect now :)

Sweet, no need to get it checked out then?

'Bruised sternum' doesn't sound that great though. I like my injuries to sound more bad-ass :(

I've done this before, its painful as fuck as I'm sure you're well aware. Kinda feels like you pulled a lung? lol Dunno exactly what it is or how to help it heal but it goes away after a while. But my best guess is you twisted/pulled a muscle in your chest or bruised something againts your rib-cage. Hurts like a bitch but i don't think its dangerous to our health or season. I think stretching and pushups/chinups can decrease the risk.

lol no, i have a 20ft tall swing in my backyard, i usually jump/backflip when jumping off, but overrotated one and fell on my back ... :)

it could be any of the things said above but it could also be a seperated sternum, they suck dick and fit the description.. ive seperated every rib on my right side

Thanks guys,

My flatmates dad conveniently came round for dinner yesterday, and he's a doctor, so I asked.

He said it's a torn muscle across the chest, and although it's unpleasant/ painful, it's not serious. Two weeks of taking it easy, and it should be good again.

I think a seperated sternum would be a little more debilitating... sounds ouch.

Strengthening chest is push ups right? I was super fit in that area the first time it happened, didn't help, since i hadn't warmed up at all. Probably would have helped this time I think...

yeah it sucks dick.. but watch out with bench press, i know for me it makes things a lot worse for my chest, push ups would probably be your best bet

you might of done some damage to the cartilage that connects your ribcage to your sternum. i did it a few years ago (along with cracking my sternum) and had pretty much the same symptoms as you just worse. but i blame it being worse on the cracked sternum.

A few seasons ago i landed on my chest and on the knuckle on my sternum and broke it. Doctors just made me take it easy cuz there is really know realy way of fixing it. what they told me tho is that thats incredibly uncommon injury in skiing its more common in car crashes. So if you didnt land directly on ur chest you probaly didnt break it so id say definately try to go a doctor. Goodluck

I had an injury really similar to this last year. I couldnt talk normally for like 3 days. I went to the hospital and got an MRI to show that i broke my manubrium (big plate above the sternum). All they did was give me vicodin and tell me not to ski for 6 weeks though. i actually landed on my back and the pressure pulled the bone apart which is pretty gnarly sounding.

You could probably get away with not seeing a doctor but i would just be way too paranoid to do that.

Apart from yours, right?

I have a job, but I'm poor because I also get off my ass to go skiing all year. So thanks, but no thanks, mum.

Like I said though, I did talk to a doctor, and it's a torn muscle.

I'm guessing if I'd landed on my chest he would have let me know if it could be serious.
