when cities/towns are abandoned, its so creepy but i cant help but look at the photos. i dont know what it is about humans and abandoned towns, but everyone i know is the same.

the scary part is that a lot of the furniture in chernobyl was looted and sold throughout europe.

when the people from that area went to sell apples in the market they wouldn't say they were from chernobyl because no one would buy them and they had to make a living.

those pictures and captions are errie, theres a aboandoned wood site, like the cabins and mills and equipment that my friends have told me is scary stuff

you can look up comparison pics between cod4 and the real pripyat, and they did a damn good job of modeling it all.
 
yeah haha thatd be fucking intense, i coudldnt even imagine doing that really high at night, it wouldnt be bad with a few friends but along would be so sketch.
 
wow so many cod4 references...the ferris wheel, the buildings, the swimming pool wow amazing that they were so accurate in making the game...also its amazing that such a bustling place could just be blown away in relatively an instant...scary

you actually go through the school, to a hotel, and then from there you go to the run down amusement park. The geography is a bit off, but the buildings are depicted accurately. look it up on google earth. it's strange.
 
actually i got that wrong...

the building you cut through thats supposed to be the school is in actuality the athletic center, with the pool. The hotel that you take the shot from is real though. And the little amusement park where you take the final stand and get extracted from is right behind the hotel.

I bet so many kids think its just a level in cod and not a real place. Another fact about it though is one of the reactors was still in operation up in till 2000 because that was the only source of power in the whole area. Imagine how creepy thatd be to work in an abandoned city.

in the month of april at that period in ukraine, the wind blows west, 9 times out of 10, on that particular day the wind happened to be blowing east,,,,,im not alluding to any type of conspiracy theory, i dont personally beleive in these grand theorys that put the worlds suffering and disasters on the shoulders of a few devious people,

its just crazy that on that day the wind was blowing east,,,,,imagine how the history of the world would have been different, had it been blowing west

a lot of history is weather.

i have a lot of respect for the people who gave their lives building that containment thing around the 4th reactor.
 
i might be wrong, but the way i understood things went down is people only gave their lives during the initial meltdown, firefighters and engineers and shit trying to shut down the plant so it didnt go totally fucking nuts (which it did anyways)

the sarcophagus wasn't built for several days after the initial crisis/meltdown. it was constructed by first just dumping bags of sand, lead, and boron on the site by helicopter, they then went in all suited up to deal with bad things that come from nuclear power plants, and built the cement contaiment thing over the big pile of shit the helicopters dropped.

either way, it required some brave motherfuckers. mad respect. mad street cred.
 
i just did a bit of research and you're right, basically all of the deaths were caused from the initial explosion and containment.
 
on the fucking nuts scale it was about an 8. if the core reached the ground water there would have been a rapid explosion of radioactive steam. that would have been 10 at least.
 
after reading this thread I spent like 3 hours researching chernobyl and pripryat. now, for some reason, I REALLY want to visit pripryat. maybe be the first person to shoot some urban in the winter..
 
not to mention all of the people that were exposed to radiation afterwards and later died from radiation poisoning. Some days after, some weeks after, months, and years. A LOT of those radiation deaths occurred and most of them aren't included in the final death tolls.
 
I just don't understand the people who freak out about Nuclear Energy, it's actually extremely safe and very very efficient. I'll always be a firm believer that until the US switches to Nuclear Energy, instead of this Wind/Solar bullcrap, we won't solve any sort of "crisis."

In 1979 there was a meltdown at 3 Mile Island, a nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania. The reason Chernobyl was so extensive is because there was nothing surrounding the reactor, no hard casing. In the United States it is mandatory to build a housing for the reactor (the big cement things). Yes Chernobyl was extremely sad, and yes something like that should never happen, but you cannot blame nuclear energy. That's like saying that flying is bad because there was a plane crash.
 
i agree.

the company i work for now does lots of energy geration (or power generation) and one of the newest and biggest parts of the company is now the nuclear division. back then (3 mile island, Chernobyl) the safety systems for core meltdowns were very undeveloped and poorly tested as we have seen, and they have been reformed with great success. accidents like these are very uncommon, and will almost never happen now. the reason 3 mile island happend was becasue the water in the reactor (where it gets its heat from and produces steam, since nuclear energy is based on a boiler method) got too low to keep the reactor cool, and the alarm system to alert the workers of this did not allow enough time prior to plant shut down to restore the water level, and thus the core melted and destruction was done. the systems in place now have much better response times, and fool proof plans to keep this from happening. also, when the core melts, it's not like there is the green glow that leaks out over everything and causes mutations, as commonly shown in the movies, although you don't want to get near this stuff. the only biproduct of nuclear plants is steam, and with the life of the core up to like 15-20 years, it makes nuclear the cleanest and most efficient energy source on the planet. no need to worry people, nuclear energy is safe
