Check Out My Student Film

If you're bored (which I assume you are since you're on NSG) take 8 minutes to watch the student film that I produced for my CP2 class this past semester at Ithaca College. It was shot on Fuji Eterna 16mm film over the course of one month. We then had an HD telecine transfer and cut it with Apple's Final Cut Studio 3, sound mix was done in pro tools. Our budget was just over $2,000. Let me know what you think:

Overall nice work, technically proficient, interesting story.

The shot in the locker room where it looks like someone is watching him, what was that about? Was it not a POV but just a weird handheld shot?

The title, The Wager

the line, "how 'bout that wager?"

what wager???? I rewatched a couple times looking for a wager but couldn't find it.

Room tone got loud enough to be distracting in a couple scenes.

Personally I would have juxtapositioned the hunt earlier and more than you guys did, and used a few more wide shots throughout.

A $2000 budget? how much of that was film related costs? Looking back, was it worth it to shoot on film? The shots are nice and rich, but also give a dated feel, adding to the legitimacy of the short.

Sadly I agree, He was much better in auditions than on set. Didn't take direction well at all, whenever we tried to make suggestions he would reply with "Yeah, Okay" and then give essentially the same performance

Thank you

We took that shot solely because we had a few feet of film to run out and thought it might look cool, we weren't originally planning on putting it in the film. It wasn't a POV, we just filmed the fisheye mirror that was in the locker room, you can see it in the background of the next shot when he comes out of the door and starts to follow her. Personally I didnt see a reason for it to be in the final cut, but I didn't direct or edit, I just produced, so it wasn't up to me.

You never see them actually make the wager, it's revealed later (pool table scene) that they had an ongoing bet to see who could kill another person first, primarily a college student since they are janitors at nearby colleges (ithaca and cornell)

Unfortunately, there was just too much background noise at some locations to the point that it was recorded on the dialogue tracks, so a fairly loud room tone was necessary to make the audio fluid and continuous.

About half of the budget was put towards film stock, processing, and transfer. The rest was food for the entire crew, location fees, props, etc. We didn't have a choice of shooting digital since it is a film based program.

well it's been said but yeah good filming, looked great, but the acting was pretty bad and took me out of it. if you were only in charge of production though you did really well, nice job
