I've got a $5,000 limit what car models are good in the mountains and have relatively good gas mileage?

I'm sure you can find a shit load of cheap subarus for that price. If you want a truck look into a Tacoma.

my friend has one with about 8 thousand into it, he runs autocross, rallycross, and drags with the same car. runs 12.8s pretty epic car

damn pretty versatile setup hes got...he must have poured a good amount of time/money into it being reliable enough to run all those different style events...dd too?

meh subaru's are played, get an e30 325ix, way better than any subaru you could get for the price, and probably the funnest awd car you could get for under like 20 grand. and 5 grand would get you a really nice one. super reliable, and very tough.

theres also the mazda 323 gtx, mitsubishi galant vr-4, audi 90 or coupe quattro.

When you'reuying a car on a low budget, it shouldn't matter if the car is "played" or not. As long as it does what you need it to do.

I'm pretty sure most of the money was dumped into a really adjustable suspension, I'm not sure on specifics, not a huge car person myself, all I know is its his life and he races some sort of event on an almost weekly basis.

and all those cars that he listed will fulfill the ops needs. seriously, i'd rather drive an old awd toyota tercel wagon from the 80s than a god damn subaru.

5000 isnt a bad budget, you can have your choice of some really sick cars if you look around. soooo you shouldnt have to settle for some boring subaru.

obviously you asked this question knowing the answer was going to be subaru.

but i'm gonna say 2g eclipse gsx. i feel like the talons are the ripoff of the eclipses..

my Subaru forester cost my 4700 +600 for new clutch+ 1200 for sound.
so like your exact price range. In its prime It would go about 600 km on mountain highways on a 55ish litre tank. City it was just a little worse.
It's still going strong like 140,000 km later at like 260 total.

Any late 80 to early 90's toyota with all-trac, (corolla, previa, celica)

Subaru Justy (4wd Geo Metro)

Suzuki Swift GTI

Chevrolet Sprint Turbo

Mazda 323 GTX

etc
