Cecil the lion killed by American

A lion named Cecil in Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park who was a huge attraction to visitors was just killed recently.

Turns out it was done by an American dentist named Walter Palmer who paid $50,000 to the right people to illegally shoot the animal.

As someone who hunts I see this dude and trophy hunters like him as scum, killing endangered animals (like a rhino he shot not too long ago) just for fun.

Here's the lion he killed:

If he's anyone's dentist in Minnesota you should hit him where it hurts by finding a new dentist.

fucking dentists with too much money, but seriously i hope he ends up in a zimbabwe prison with a decent term and get abused by the inmates

Also the way he killed it... thing was alive for 40 hours with an arrow sticking out of it.

The hunt took place around 6 July. “They went hunting at night with a spotlight and they spotted Cecil,” Rodrigues said. “They tied a dead animal to their vehicle to lure Cecil out of the park and they scented an area about half a kilometre from the park.”

The hunter first shot at Cecil with a bow and arrow but failed to kill the lion. “They tracked him down and found him 40 hours later when they shot him with a gun,” Rodrigues said.

When I first heard about this a few days ago, the evidence at the time made it seem like the lion happened to wander out of the boundary zone of the protected park and happened to be killed then. If this new info is true that Dr. Douchebag purposefully lured him out beyond the park's protection to kill him, then it is complete and utter bullshit. Not that trophy hunting is not bullshit, but it is even more so under these circumstances.

RIP cecil.

i dont understand trophy hunters that go after endangered species. Fucked up

One of this asshole's main goals was to kill via bow all of the animals on Pope and Young's record list. He's also killed a white rhino.

And of course he claims to be completely ignorant of the lion's identity. He said he had no idea which lion he was actually hunting. But he's obviously full of shit and has been convicted of making a false statement to wildlife officials before.

I really hope they go after this guy as much as they can.

I hope he faces jail time. I know he probably won't, but these guys should. The penalty needs to be extremely high to deter this crap.

That's exactly what I was going for :)

Hahahaha it's so much better than I'd initially thought:

Dude.....the pictures people are posting of "him"... fucking hilarious.

They should give the dentist about a million dollar fine that should directly go to the wildlife preserves in efforts to stop this kind of BS from happening. If he can't pay it right away, maybe force him to pay it over a 6 month term. Then throw his ass in jail for about 15 years to think about what he's done. To the people that helped him should be thrown into a prison(for at least 20 years imo), and if that prison gives prisoners a paycheck their paycheck should go to wild life preserves to help preserve the wild life they have been destroying. Any funds that they seize in correlation to this shit should go straight to the wildlife preserves.

Seeing as this is somewhat related, Link: http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2015/07/27/3684704/obama-ivory-trade-restrictions-united-states/

You think if he can't pay $1,000,000 now he would be able to in 6 months? Dear god I hope dentists are not making $2m+ a year.

If you own your own practice you can make close to that I would think. This is the average annual salary of a Dentist: http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=Dentist/Salary

I just figured if he can spend $50,000 to kill an endangered animal and let it suffer for 40 hours he can at least pay 20x the $50,000. To be perfectly honest he had plenty of time to know he was doing wrong. Especially seeing as the lion was being tracked for 40 hours.

Trophy hunting is just fucked up and in no way justifiable. Sad to see this stuff play out.

I see trophy hunting no different than rich fat dudes heli skiing. much easier to pay for someone to go out and do the actual work for you while you just point and shoot.

oh well, just the way she goes. the worlds set up to kiss the asses of the wealthy and we just gotta deal with it. really hope something happens to this dude but im sure hes got enough money/lawyers to get away unscathed.

Just because this is becoming another Tumblr Activist movement, lets at least make sure facts are correct.

1) Lions are not endangered, they are not listed on any endangered list.

2) There has been nothing shown that says the Dr. has done anything ILLEGAL. You may disagree with what he did according to your personal beliefs, but nothing illegal.

3) The guides are facing possible charges for the killing, if it turns out that the land that he was on didn't have a lion kill permit, even though the he legally had a lion hunting permit.

4) The Fox9 reporter out of Minneapolis is a complete fucking scumbag for posting pictures of the Dr's house, cars, and family. You may disagree with what he did, but putting his family in real danger is fucking low.

Its easy to point a finger at a guy who kills a lion and label him a bad, bad person.

Harder to point at ourselves and our need for croplands rather than forests, fish on the dinner rather than stable populations at sea, extra napkins instead of old growth and patches of "native species" to remind us occasionally of what it all once was.

Ummmmmmmm, how do you think that park gets it's funding?

Do people think all hunting that dosnt kill help exterminate pests is a bad thing? Why is this different?

Dude shot a lion, and allowed for more lions to live at the reserve. Yeah he could have just donated the money, and fisherman could pay for licenses and throw hookless flys and lures.

you missed the part about this lion being a big attraction to the park in the first place and contributes to bringing in more money to the area than that 50k lump sum that only goes to very few people not associated with the park itself.

This was poaching, not a legal hunt done by park officials for monetary gain to help fund the park.

here's a couple quotes from the Guardian article for you:

"Cecil the lion, known for his black mane, was about 13 years old and a famous attraction for wildlife tourists in Zimbabwe until, earlier this month, he was tempted outside a national park using bait and shot with a bow and arrow. He is believed to have taken 40 hours to die."

"Zimbabwean police warned that he faced poaching charges"

"Cecil was wearing a GPS collar as part of a research project that Oxford University has been running since 1999, making it possible to trace his last movements."

This is pretty clear cut case of him shooting an animal he wasn't supposed to in a situation that will end up costing the park and area more money in lost tourism than it would have gained from the fees.

I mean, I agree, but that doesn't change the fact that this guys is a douchsock and trophy hunters are the scum of the earth. Hunting for food and population control... I have no problems with.

Any sources for those facts??

As for lions. They're numbers are decreasing. And there is calls to put them on the endangered list.

As for it not being illegal. In a joint statement from the Zimbabwe Parks and Widlife management, "Ongoing investigations to date suggest that the killing of the lion was illegal ... Therefore, all persons implicated in this case are due to appear in court facing poaching charges."

MORE FACTS.

2 men have already had charges pressed over this killing. And as for the dentist. He issued a statement saying that to all his knowledge everything was done legally and he didn't know the lion was a fan favourite. To which I call bullshit on. Like if it was done legally (and that's a big if) the group he did it through would of known about Cecil being a huge draw for Zimbabwe tourism and the park. I get how some trophy hunting of animals can raise money for conservation efforts. But those hunts are done to lions that are outcasted by their pride. Not to a lion with cubs and is still in the pride. And surely not to a lion that draws in massive tourism money.

Also, why does it matter if this becomes a big SJW thingy on tumblr, facebook or any social media? Those platforms have huge audiences. Facebook has 1.44 billion members. That's a larger audience than any wildlife conservation group could possibly hope for. And as for Tumblr they have 300 million users. So whether the debate on trophy hunting is done through tumblr as apposed to running adds, either way it still draws light to a debate that is needed. Look at the affects of Kony 2012, it raised alot of attetion to the LRA and Kony himself. Pressure was put on governments to find him and stop the LRA. Although unsuccesful.

I mean it would be fine if it was a legal kill and the money was going back to the park. But it seems like it wasnt and the chances are that the money is actually going straight to someones pocket

Well when you consider some hunters hike and climb miles into areas for their kills, chop up heavy chunks of meat, then head back over people that pay money for people to do the work for them, its like dudes who skin hours, camp, and search for lines while rich jerries just have wasatch heli birds fly them up to the top of mt. Superior.

not against all heli/airplane shenanigans cuz dudes actually use them to get into zones they basically live in for months.

Tl/dr rich people blow and hopefully lions buttfuck him

A lot of trophy hunts in africa actually do some good. They put money towards conservation, parks etc. The hunter also usually takes his trophy, but the meat gets donated to a nearby tribe. Its not like these guys shoot the animals, take a picture then leave it to rot. If done legally there is absolutely nothing wrong with it

That's very ironic coming from the person who quotes an insane amount of false studies.

I thought male lions don't go after food? I thought the ladies went out and killed then brought it back

I can't help but feel like this situation has really shown that the internet is acting like a modern day version of a lynch mob doling out pitchfork justice.

Isn't society supposed to allow the court system to do its work, and aren't we supposed to abide by innocent until proven guilty?

I absolutely do not agree with the killing of this lion in any way shape or form... but I can't help but really wonder if things are starting to get kind of dangerous.

I mean remember when Reddit had a false witch hunt over the boston bombings?

This is a dangerous cliff to start going over.

I would agree with you if he wasn't openly bragging about having done it before he got lit up like the Time Square XMas tree for it.
