Cars? What to buy.

Hi peoples,

I am looking for to buy a new car. I spend about approximately 75% time in city, 25% mountains. Originally I was looking at between the cars of Mazda 3 (hatch) or 08 Impreza (hatch), but seems like no second hand 08 Impreza hatchback available in my area so I am also looking at 2012. Impreza for me was winning because of practicalibility in the snowy conditions, but I am wondering what other cars I should be considering. Would prefer no SUV because I spend lots of time in city during week and would rather have not a petrol guzzling car. Hatchback is obviously ideal for this purposes.

So, Impreza hatch/Outback/mazda 3/caliber r/t? Or what else can i be looking at. i really liked 08 impreza hatchback when i test drived my friends, but i cannot find. anyone have experience with 2012? how do they perform

I have never had a bad experience with subarus. They rock in the snow, are super fun to drive, do pretty good on gas, are reliable as all hell, and the AWD system (especially in the newer ones) is amazing. You will not regret going subie

Forgot to say, my mom got the 2010 legacy, before they changed body styles, and the thing drives so well, i can only imagine the impreza will be a little quicker and better handling

SUBARU!!!! SUBARU!!!! LIEEEK!!! SUBARUS ARE THE GREATEST CARS EVER!!! THEY'RE SOOO AWESOME!! GET THE WRX! AND LIEK YOU CAN PUT A SWEET EXAUST ON IT AND TURBO ON IT!!! AND MOD IT OUT SOOOO MUCH!!! I JUST WANT TO HAVE SEX WITH MY SUBARU CUZ ITS SOO LEGIT MAN!! ALL THE LADIEZ WILL LOOOOVE YOU AND WANT YOU DIIICK!

If you can find a subaru brat get it. Its like a pickup type thing with rear facing seats in the back of it. Super fun.

Last gen Audi A6 Allroad. It's like an A6 Avant, only on steroids with hydraulic suspension and diff locks.

Drives just like an A6 station on the road (comfy with a bit of sport), reasonably fast, German, it drives rather well in snow (seriously) also apart from being a sensible German station wagon it can off road quite well.)

That german styling:

i'm in france so everythung is in euros but in dollars, i'd say anywhere below $35-40,000..., although less is better ha. budget is not an issue of large proportion. its a xmas present for myself since i got a new promotion at bnp paribas (large bank) this summer of most recent and pays six figures (in ueros) when you includes the bonus. and even better is that my colleague owns a cabin in the mountains so we get out there to the mountains every weekend to ski now, life is very good!

and to all the sarcastic replies, if NOT subaru then what do you suggest?!?! all i am looking for is good price-to-performance ratio, obviously i could get potentially much better performance car, but i prefer to save all places i can, and subaru seems to do the job. theres nothing like knowing you have the money to spend if something cannot resist comes across your path.

I'm hooked on Audi.

You could probably find a 2009 S4 for that price range - great performance and they truck in the snow. The styling is much nicer than a subaru, and the S4 is blazing fast.

09 s4 is far from blazing fast, i honestly think my 02 was faster than my 07 and faster than the 09 an 11 that i drove. new s4's are far verrrryyy far from blazing fast haha

oh and i mean i dunno about prices in france but i just picked up an 07 with 30,000 miles and it was like 38k so I dunno if you could find an 09 but you can definitely get like an 06 or 07 and being that there is a much better selection of audis in europe you could probably find yourself an rs4... now those are blazing fast... 450hp stock! beast.

serously get an audi if you can. all my friends drive Surarus and it seems like they are always having something wrong with them (to many mods?) my boss sold me his 08 A6 4.2 quatro (i work for an auto shop) and i haven't had a problem since. and the quatro system kick ass in the snow. but it all depends on your budget because most audis aren't cheap

If you have 35 to 40 thousand dollar spending limit and you get a Subaru I hate you. Get an Audi or Mazda in my opinion. I would say one of those new Lexus hatchbacks cause they look like sex but I have no idea how they handle or if it's like sporty. Bmw's are neat to I just don't like there electronic suspension thig they got going on

haha, i am a sort of person that is happier when i spend less on things haha. about mazda's, are they really that nice? because my impression of them has always been that htey are sort of in the same category as toyotas/hondas/hyundais. the mazda3s i've seen have all had really nice interiors though, something that subarus seem to lack. i'm just worried about how they handle in the snow/rougher terrain.

my fam just bought a 2012 hatch impreza a few weeks ago. Car is sick as fuck man. Gets like 30 miles to the gallon with out trying for fuel economy. Has a fair amount of power for such a lil 4 cyl, and the interior looks like a middle of the line luxury car. I would recommend it for sure.

My buddy has an mazda3 hatch, two other buddy's have 08 imprezas hatches, and I've got an 06 imprezas hatch. All great cars, but Iif you drive in snow I would definitely get a Subaru. If you are going to get the Mazda, you will absolutely need studded snow tires, I've been with my buddy when he's gotten stuck on multiple occasions in his mazda

In my opinion Mazda is the sportier version of a Subaru and definitly not as gay. Go with a Mazda! You can usually get pretty cheap audis to which are amazing cars. Another option would be volvo but there expensive to fix

I'd say if I were in your price range to get a car and it was going to be a subie I would get a legacy gt and if you have the money a spec B. For your money they have nicer interiors than the wrx/sti and the spec b are really quick and very comfortable. Then again I would definitely get an audi; my dream car would be a audi S3 sport back which I think would be a blast and it is really nice, quick, etc; and I am pretty sure you can get them in various models overseas then you can here. I mean I drive a saab 92x which is basically a rebranded wrx which I like and I wouldn't prefer anything else at this point but the audi's that I have driven are much much nicer inside and less harsh to drive without giving up great performance. Arguably in that price range you can get some very nice XI BMW that would fit your needs in the snow beautifully and are quite nice to drive as well. With everything taken in consideration I would definitely look into a audi S3 TDI 6-speed if that is even offered over there. That would be my choice because of TDI efficiency, manual, and quattro although not offered in the US...also I am not sure how much space matters to you.

My ex has a '08 Impreza 2.5 hatch. She bought it new.

We looked at the faster models(WRX, STi), but decided against them. Not only were they a lot more expensive, but they cost more to insure and didn't get anywhere near the same fuel economy. And they both require supreme fuel.

The 2.5 hatch is a nice car. Fun to drive, and with proper winter tires, is very capable in the snow. I would buy one.
