Car stereo question

ok so i have a 2006 kia optima. i bought an eclipse cd 1200 stereo. it sounds pretty good with the stock speakers. i was wondering.... should i buy subs or speakers first. or is it just much better to get both. i don't want to spend a lot. i was looking to spend about 120 on some speakers. i want some good lows but i know that you don't normally get them with just speakers. so could i just buy subs or should i get good speakers to go with them?

Subs, trust me you wont hear the speakers and you might not even get speakers, that is if the stock ones are good...

good luck getting a sub- amp- wire- and install for less than 120- you can get prebuilt kits but you still need to install- its not ridiculously hard but it can be a pain in the ass- get a fusion all in one combo- comes with a 12 in sub and purpose built ported box- amp, power wire and signal cable- you can get them for like 200- but for 120 you'd be lucky to get a pair of decent sounding speakers-with this kind of shit save up for a little bit and do it right-

some of these are gonna sound really shitty but give it a try-

well, my friend is obsessed with his car/speakers.
he finds deals and installs it himself. then sells his old shit.
so essentially, he's constantly upgrading his speaker/sub quality for no money.
try it, you just have to front some money for the first set

First of all it depends on what you really want. If you just want to bump then get subs but if you want a good clear sound overall buy speakers. I doubt you'll really use the sub just for lows (no body ever does they just bump their music). With either route never pay for an install that shit is pretty easy it just takes some reading and a few hours. Go to Crutchfield.com and learn first then look what they have in stock and go search around and find it cheaper.

dude i thought i needed a new full soundsystem

so fist i was gonna get a sub and head unit...

just get the sub and amp

then turn down your bass on your speakers and now they do not distort or anything

so ya do that it was way better

No. No. No. No. No. No. NO....unless you drive a 1983 Caprice Classic, live in the ghetto, and slang da crack rox. Good mids & highs > subs any day.
OP - you aren't going to build anything amazing for $120. You definitely aren't getting subs & amp, let alone installed, for that kind of money. Get yourself some decent mids & highs. When you're ready to drop a few grand, then build a big stereo.

Ive got 2 12" MTX subs in a box with a 400watt amp that im looking to get rid of for around 200, i live in jersey so maybe we can meet some where if your interested.

ive uprgraded my whole system in my 99 maxima and it sounds great. as you did the first thing you should get is the head unit. i got a alpine 9984? i forget im in school now. i also replaced my front 2 speakers with alpine type s's and replaced the back 2 speakers with dB speakers. these were about 160 each with install at a local store. i also have 2 alpine type r's 12"s in my trunk with a 2200 watt amp. i love how it all sounds. if you have the money i would replace everythiing as i love driving with good sounding music. message me if you have any questions and ill try to help you out as best as i can

i hope to god that is the max of that amp cause if thats rms im suprised your subs havent exploded through your trunk- those things would get raped with 1100 watts a piece- theyre 500 watts rms- theyll handle 1000 watts for about 35 seconds before magnet failure and bout a min before the cone warps and blows out-now if ur amp was running round 1000 watts rms which it should be- then it wil sound nicey-nice- dont mean to be a dick their-

If you want good speaker in your pricerange something along the lines of an alpine type E or R- for an optima you looking at 2 pairs of 6 and 1/2 speakers - but still you would need an amp if you want more power to get you that bass that you want- rockford fosgate generally builds some quality amps- low distortion- true pwer rating- they are pretty strict with the safet modes so you dont have to worry about frying them- and theyre decently cheap- but still they cost a couple od doneros and install is a pain in the ass- for a first timer I would seriously get it done right- jus to install the amp your looking at running power cable from the battery- signal cable and rca's from the headunit- grounding everything- making sure all your fuses are set - the you have to run wires to every seaker in the car- and tune your amp for gain, , hz levels, and shit like that- just spend 50 bucks and get it done right-

i say start with speakers because if you don't want to hear just bass and your stock speakers are crackling sounding like ass, ya dig? or maybe you do, i don't know

Speakers would be useless. The receiver would be the best option to change out of everything in the system. If you like the boom, get a sub next. Speakers should be the LAST thing you buy, just to tweak the sound a little.
