'Captain' Jack Carey passed away a week ago while riding his bike and running into a truck. I never knew him personally but my family was really good friends with his brother Chip Carey. I've heard a ton of good stories about him, and everytime i did, I came away thinking "man, isn't that the life" He was an inspiration to me as a skier and our condolenses go out to the entire Carey family. This is truely a loss to good friends and the entire skiing community.

Worked with him at one of the Canadian Freeski Opens and Captain Jack was the life of the comp. He is and will always be a legend.

RIP

Wow. Sad to hear. My grandparents are friends with Chip and introduced me to him when I was a kid up at Sugarloaf. At least he made the best of his life.

Captain Jack Carey was a very unique character, I was shocked when I found out that he had passed away. He worked at Telluride Sports accross from the Gondola Station, and i would see him there with a huge smile on his face. He is a local legend, and had a giant impact on the Telluride Community, everyone knew who he was and those who didn't know him by name knew the guy with the beard. I'm glad to see that there is still people on this website who are capable of showing respect to a fellow skier and local legend.

I met Jack when i was probably 12 or 13. I dont think he ever remembered my name but every year when he came to Red for the freeski comp, he would recognize me we would have a nice conversation.

RIP

That video was inspiring. Captain Jack was such an exceptional individual, my mom is devastated over the loss of our local hero. RIP.

yea, I met him a couple times, but never really got to know him, know him (if you know what I mean)... either way, I feel the loss. The Canadian Open won't be the same this year without him around.

RIP

(this has been too common of a trend these past couple months, may this be the last for many moons).
