Canon vs yongnuo

So, I'm thinking about buying a new lens. My choices of lens would be the Canon 18-55, the Canon 50mm f/1.8 and the yongnuo 50mm 1.8. Im buying a new lens for a few reasons. The 18-55 I want to buy for vlogging. I'm trying to start a blog. I also want to do a little skiing videography. I'm also trying to start doing some paid work in photography (portraits mostly), which is why I want one of the 50mm lenses. I already have a Canon 28-80 (broken auto focus) and a Canon 75-300 for skiing and other sports photography. If you were in my position, what would you buy?

What is your budget? I would steer clear of the Canon 75-300mm if you have the budget to buy more expensive glass, all these lenses you are looking at are pretty low end, the 50mm 1.8 Canon is a nice cheap lens so if you want a nifty fifty I would pick that up. The others I would look into a Canon 24-105, used they are pretty reasonable, if you can spend a little more look into the 24-70mm 2.8 and a 70-200mm f4 or another L series tele lens. You can also look into the Sigma ART lenses, I personally haven't used them but I have heard good things from cinematographers and photographers I know who have used them.

I'm a high school student, and unfortunately dont have a huge budget. I can spend about 70 bucks, so enough to get a used canon 50 or a new yongnuo 50. I already have the 75-300 as I had the opportunity to get it for $40, and I needed a telephoto for some mountain biking shoots, and some skiing shots later in the year. So yeah. I have more than 60 to 70, but I need to get Christmas presents for my family, so 60 to 70 is about what I'm willing to spend.

I highly suggest saving your money then. When I first had my camera I made some rash decisions in getting lenses which I now don't even need or use. You can make due with what you have, just save up and get a nice lens in the future. Who knows maybe you will get some cash for Christmas and be able to go buy something better.

I know that I will use the nifty fifty. Probably one in five shots in my portfolio are shot with fifty mil lenses that I have borrowed from friends and family. I want to get one so that I don't have to keep borrowing from other people. Thanks for the advice man. I appreciate it. I'll probably get a 50mm.

wait on it. youre better off saving money and putting it towards better glass, trust me, I was in the exact same position and made the mistake of spending money on stuff i sold no more then 2 years later to upgrade to better gear now that Im doing paid work

I didn't ask if you would wait in my position. I asked which of the three lenses I should buy. I probably will upgrade eventually, but it will be a long time before I can save up enough to buy the 50mm 1.2 l lens. I've read enough reviews of the 50mm 1.4 that say it isn't significantly better than the 50mm 1.8, so I probably won't buy that lens. A thousand bucks for a lens on a high school students budget just isn't realistic. I ended up buying the yongnuo 50mm lens, and it's got pretty good reviews on YouTube and several photography websites.

Im one year out of high school. Im telling you what i would have done had i have known what i do now. whatever lense you buy, its still about how you use it, i understand that, just trying to give you some insight from my point of view. However you do it i still wish you luck in photography

Yeah. I appreciate your point of view. I should've mentioned on here that one reason I need a prime lens is that I do a lot of low light photography. I haven't done any paid work with low light, because my current lenses only go down to f/3.5 so I have to boost the iso up to 3200 or 6400 to properly expose my shot. The f/1.8 lens should help quite a bit with this.

The f/1.8 lens should help quite a bit with this.

You need to sit back and relax.... You asked for opinions on what to buy and two of us said wait and save money. Buy the 1.2 in a year, are you currently taking on gigs that call for the need of better glass? There is a lot of experience in the field on NS and taking others advice is sometimes the right decision. I bought some lenses when I was younger and had I known the stuff I know now I would of waited and suffered a bit longer to have the better glass. Camera equipment is important and you can't rush a purchase especially if you are on a tighter budget. A 100 dollar lense isn't going to make that big of a difference in your work even if it is a faster lense, there are always CONS to cheaper glass that sometimes waiting is the best option.

I kinda disagree here, the 50mm 1.8 is gonna get him started shooting with primes, and if he needs to upgrade in two years so be it ($70 sunk in cost for a lens you use for 2 years isn't bad at all esp since he could probably sell it after)
