Hey guys so you may think that the gh2 is better overall but i have just started hearing about it. Im looking in to my first dslr and even though the gh2 is a little higher in price picture and video quality definitely seems better overall. I will also not be upgrading for a very long time.I do not know if the gh2 does 60 fps or what little help here on specs which one should be better for short films and shooting skiing?

Why? If he's willing to spend the money on a full HDSLR setup I'm sure he's willing to invest the time into learning how to use it. You don't need to post "Don't get a DSLR" in every thread ever made regaurding a new camera purchase. (I'm not directing that at you specifically by the way). People aren't stupid, if they can afford it, they'll learn what's necessary to use them as tools to create beautiful images.

Why...?

The only reason I see for buying that camera nowadays is if you don't have a computer that can handle anything more than hdv. Its a good camera but tapes are obsolete and there is cameras with similar specs and manual control for dirt cheap now that shoot avchd.

I used to believe this but the t2i is the hv40. The only really comparable quality camera for a similar price is the Panasonic tm700 and similar cameras. If you only have 1000 to spend, get the tm700 and a tripod.

this is not true at all, many kids on here are pretty dumb and think the camera will make the filmmaker

Pretty sure most kids don't just throw down 1500 on a DSLR setup and then just leave it sitting in a backpack in their room. And sure they'll suck when they start but that's part of learning any skill

Why are t2is all of a sudden easy begginer cameras? I dont see whats wrong with a tm700. Its got 1080 60p everyone raves about, a fixed lens, and produces great footage.

GH2 hands down, but you may need to put in some hard work and research into the hacks and expansions before making a decision. If you know what you are doing, you can get significantly more value out of it than the t2i.

OP I don't want to offend you, so please don't take any of this personally.

But some people are so outright stupid, i'd hate to name names and make people think badly about their stuff, plus I'm not great at filming myself. However, some of the things I've seen are really bad, and hopefully Newschoolers can guide OP in the right direction so he doesn't look like a fool. I shouldn't have assumed what he might do, and NS is great for teaching, but I just don't want him to think getting one of these cameras will instantly make him great at filming, editing, and networking his videos because there's more to it than just the initial gear purchase.

W/E, that's just my .02, honestly OP, listen to Brock down there, learn the camera before you buy it, then when you do buy it, you'll want to try tons of new things and have great ideas. Good luck!

what does getting a certain camera have to do with "networkjing your videos", or even being a good filmer for that matter??...no matter what camera op gets there will be lots of work..u get out what you put in, do your ground work and you will get great results with either camera

from a video standpoint:

t2i upscales from about 700 lines of resolution, gh2 is true 1080p

t2i is a 1.6x crop, gh2 is a 2x (theres a debate about it being 1.86x because of the oversize sensor etc.)

t2i is ef mount, takes a decent amount of lenses

gh2 is m43, can take almost any lens, including pl mount and b4 as well as leica m

t2i has an optical viewfinder, gh2 has an evf (so it works during video, but many prefer optical for stills)

t2i is manual focus only (but you can set the focus with AF), gh2 has usable autofocus with native lenses (which are amazingly sharp, but only focus by wire), but many people use manual focus

t2i has magic lantern, adds some very useful features (i'm not 100% sure on all of them, so I won't get into specifics). gh2 has been hacked to provide abc-intra at over 200mbps (though compression is being improved, and variable bitrate features are emerging). gh2 also allows iso up to 12,800 in video mode (only really usable in black and white), and there are a few other things.

t2i i believe has zebras or something to help with exposure through magic lantern, gh2 has a setting where overexposed areas will flash on the screen

t2i has a 12 minute recording limit, gh2 can record well over 30 min with the right patch/card

gh2 has a crop mode, a flip out screen, much less moire, slightly less rolling shutter, and the kit lens is made for video (14-140). t2i is cheaper

gh2 is a little smaller, neither are weather sealed, though i haven't heard of any issues with either short of full submergence

thats all I can think of off the top of my head, I'm sure I probably left a few things out

no problem guys, feel free to pm/post questions here. I shoot with a gh2, and I have it hacked, I try to stay somewhat up to date, but I'm a little out of the loop with finals and everything. you can also check out personal-view.com for deals on gear/rigs, and news about the hack. dvxuser is alright, there will occasionally be something, and the vimeo group is borderline dead.
