Canon T1i owners: using on-camera flash manually?

Please help me out. I've just gotten a Rebel T1i and have gotten it dialed-- except for one thing.

Is it possible to take the on-camera flash off the E-TTL II mode, and control its power manually? I see the box in the menu, but it says "E-TTL II" and is grey, AKA I can't change it. I need to be able to stop down the on camera flash manually, ie choose M, 1/2, 1/4, etc.

This is because I often use my external flash as an optical slave and the on-camera flash as a downpowered fill, so I want to be able to control exactly how bright it is.

It would be downright stupid if this weren't an option, I just can't seem to figure out how/where it is.

Anybody have ideas?

scouring the manual has taught me that the T1i does not allow the user to operate the built-in flash on a true manual mode. What a shame... maybe I can hope it is included in a firmware update sometime in the future.
 
He's not trying to just turn it on...

and you bought a soccer mom camera, you got soccer mom controls.
 
evan, I know what I was given, and I'm grateful to have a camera to shoot with at all.

No, it's not a 1DmkIII. I know that. I was just sort of expecting to be able to control flash output manually, because I know for a fact that D40s from years ago do it, and hoped somebody might point out something I was missing.

I'm sorry that my camera isn't up to Your Majesty's standards, I'll throw it out immediately.
 
Didn't mean to sound like a dick i was just saying, you get what you bought. Theres bound to be a way around it, search another some other forums? im sure you're not the only one having problems.
 
A few google searches didn't turn up anything, but I'm skimming some photography forums as of now... since it is a firmware shortfall, not hardware, it should be easy to fix... the question is whether anybody's made any firmware upgrades, because i know that Canon hasn't released one.
