Me and my friend are thinking of buying a canon gl2. What have you guys heard about them good or bad? Other recomendations also.

Amazing. I haven't any experience with other cameras but this one is great. My friends and I use it to film skating and it is fantastic

The Gl2 is a great camera, but personally I like the gl1 a little better...but i know you can get a xl1 used on bhphotovideo.com for around 1500, that would be my best advice, the manual capabilities on the xl are phenomal and really user friendly, also, you would have the ability to obtain really crisp audio also, suprisingly the size isnt really a factor, its not incredible heavy. either way, be it gl1, gl2 or xl1 are all very versitle cameras.

I dont own one but I have used one many times to shoot skating and I have to say its worth the price. I dont have anything bad to say about it and it can take a descent beating, my friend has dropped his a few times been hit ect. and it still works perfect. If your looking into a fisheye for it deff get a raynox.

My friend uses his for everything including but not limited to snowboarding, skating, filming jumping off stuff, etc. but I think the only bad thing is no HD, I think. ( looks compared to my brother's older sony HD)

Don't get a GL1. You will either be disappointed from the start or will master the camera and be ready for something better very quickly. I don't know what type of experience you had with a GL1, but they're basically equivalent to the VX1000: old, outdated, outperformanced.

A GL2 isn't bad. People will say its too old or bad or whatever, but if you want to learn about manual features and such, its a nice camera to start with. However, its in a funky zone where you're paying a bit much for something that is a "starter" cam. I think that if you want to learn how to use basic manual features, go with something cheaper, like the Panasonic GS500. I used that last year and it has manual iris, white balance, and shutter, as well as a manual focus ring. It puts out good quality too.

If you're looking for quality, get an HV30. Hands down. Those things put out the crisp-est video I have ever seen for a camera of that size/price. It is unbelievable. True, they lack some of the manual features that you might find on a GL2, but it will be easier to use and put out better quality video.
