Canon announces C300

Quite the way to put it. I think Dan Carr has some insight on the c300 that would give it some justification. Not saying the c300 is by any means better, but I think his perspective is worth reading.

I seriously feel bad for the guys at Canon. I don't see a single reason why someone would spend $20k+ on a c300 rig instead of $16k for a RED Scarlet rig, which is better than the c300 in literally every single aspect.

if it was much cheaper, like sub $10k, I could see it being aimed at professional photographers who have moved into video/hdslr users who already have a good still body and many L-series lenses (or have a lot of money invested into EF mount lenses/system in some other way.

hahahahah

i don't see how canon had the balls to even go through with the announcement. knowing what they did about their own product, they should have known, through pure scarlet speculation, that they were going to be put to shame. i bet they're already scrambling to find a way to recover from this embarrassment.

Honestly, I would have been insanely excited if the event went something like this:

"We have released DSLR firmware that eliminates all moiré. That is all."

If that were the case, I'd have no desire whatsoever to upgrade cameras in the near future.

I wouldn't put it in the same class as the Alexa.

The Alexa is an amazing albeit expensive and HUGE still wipes the Canon aside.

I mean, that's what canon was aiming for.

Unfortunately, I think this camera is only slightly better than the f3. Very similar to an fs100 as far as they both mimick a DSLR with some essential video bells and whistles (XLR, headphone jack, EVF, HDMI out). Of course this has 2k resolution.

bottom line: worth $20k? no.

Exactly.

I'd hesitate to say I'd ever really see this out in the field while I'm shooting. I'd be shocked.
