Hey guys,So i'm getting more into video, I got a Gopro2 over Christmas Break from my job and enjoy filming and love editing skiing and snowboarding. I want to move up to the next step, and believe a T2i is a good next step. Per reading the NS's forums, I wanted to skip the kit lens and get a Tamron 17-50 on ebay or craigslist.

Well I found a guy on craigslist that wanted to sell his used T2i for $500, and when I said I wanted to shoot snow stuff, he recommended a 14-40L which he said he had and was willing to sell for a good deal.

I'm just wondering the difference between the 17-40L and the 17-50, I was pretty content on the 17-50, but if he really wanted to make it a package, it would be nice to have everything together, as I would still have to find a 17-50 elsewhere. I liked the Tamron bc it's only about $350 on ebay, which would save me some money to purchase a stabilizer, fisheye, ect in the near future. Thanks and please help me out with info, and sorry for the long story, just giving some background.

how much would the 17-40 be? it's gonna be better optical quality, but the 17-50 is still really solid. the 17-40 is also f/4, whereas the 17-50 is f/2.8, so the 17-50 is better in low light, and you get that extra 10mm of range.

unless he is somehow selling the 17-40 for quite a bit less than a 17-50, i would take the 17-50.

I think the 17-40 f4L is pointless unless you have a full frame sensor. The tamron is cheaper, faster, longer range and will look just as good as the 17-40 when you're shooting video.

eh, the 17-40 has better colors and contrast, plus it is weather sealed(when you put a filter on it) which can be a big thing for some people

Ya if you buy a t2i then weather sealing clearly isn't a concern to you, in which case go tam, but if someone shoots with a 60d/7d I think the 17-40 is worth the extra money, because face it not many people need to be shooting at 2.8 when they are on the slopes. Stop down the 17-40L to like f8 and it is MUCH sharper then the tamron

.

but we're photographers, you'd think that the difference for video would be less. OP how much are you paying for the 17-40?

Thanks guys, looks like I'll steer clear of the 17-40L unless it's a greeaat deal. Thanks for the advice and helping out an entry-level guy!
