Loon is a tourist attraction. Cannon is full of locals who are down to have a great time.

Glad to hear they are stepping up the park game - their setup is a lot of fun. The big cannon rail is my favorite. I ski Cannon / BWoods mostly due to the fact that there is never anyone there and are great local mountains.

IMO Cannon's park is more fun than Waterville the past few years. I have been very disappointed in WV's setups in the past years.

FUCK FSC. FUCK BODE. FUCK RACERS. They ruined Mittersill and now Cannons gonna become race city with the new official US ski team run. They ruined the best thing the mountain had to offer for racer, and for a profit. New lodges in the next few years, lifts on Mittersill, snowmaking. It's all gone to shit. Good thing I'm trying to get into backcountry because I don't want to give Cannon another cent after the shit they have done. First it's "just" Baron's, next its gonna be Tuckerbrook for fucks sake. WHAT'S NEXT? SOUTH SIDE DEVELOPMENT??? Is the Lonesome Lake Hut gonna become a fucking LODGE?? YOU TELL ME FSC because I have NO FUCKING idea where this money is all coming from! All you fucking parents must think your kid is the next BODE MILLER OR SOME SHIT FOR PAYING 4 MIL FOR THIS EXPANSION. FUCKING LOON, LOOOOON!! is looking like a good place to ski at this point now that Cannon has sold out to become racer city.

Sorry for the rant.... I just think other forums like TGR would get mad at me for that....

I've only skied cannon once but the mittersill thing is a bummer. was really fun when I went. I hope they scale back the 300 ft wide slope they are supposed to put where the old t-bar was.

Totally agree about this shit but we still have one more year to ski mittersill as its been for the past 25ish years. So enjoy it well you can. Also as they expand for racing purposes? Thats shit espically when they don't open their park until mid january.

Not really... The expansion of the trails is basically complete. Next year will be snowmaking and the T bar. Most of the integrity is completely gone at this point.
 
Okay so yea fuck FSC but there are private investors funding FSC project on mittersill. Just FYI ass wipe nacho man if you actually cared about cannon not being like loon you would be happy because the only reason were not like loon is because were not a private thing we are state owned and lately weve been making shit for money, and the state has long been considering cutting us off to sell out to private corporations. So this Mittersill FSC US SKI TEAM thing is the only hope for making enough money to keep us state owned, I think everyone would rather deal with some race ass holes, than have cannon turn into loon. Also south face exspansion would be fucking dope and open up a huge lift serviced bowl, wicked fun to ride. It would also along with Official US ski team runs and FSC put us back on the map so maybe one day we will make enough money to go tell fsc UP YOURS AND GET THE FUCK OUT. Just my two cents

+1 but this is still not ideal

I really do feel like the spirit of just skiing and having a good time is going away. It's awful that I feel that way but I can't help it. That's really why I love Cannon / Bretton Woods - they are both awesome mountains that true locals enjoy going to and are kind of 'secret spots' that nobody goes to outside of the regulars.

Both places get better snow, are less crowded, and are always in better shape than the surrounding areas (Loon, WVV).

Loon is a joke now - it's not even worth trying to go there on a weekend anymore and ski in a sea of Massholes renting for the day. Their park isn't even worth it. I went to Loon once last year and was HUGELY disappointed in their park.

WVV has nothing to offer outside of their parks. I hate their trails and it is always windy and conditions always suck. Even their parks have been lacking in quality lately which is a huge disappointment. Exhibition isn't even good anymore. Their jumps are alright but their rail lines are pitiful and you can really only hit like 2 rails max. Also they constantly have comps there (usually snowboarder only) which is bullshit. It is extremely obvious that everything WV does is geared towards boarders.

I think Cannon is a far cry from becoming like Loon. IMO the expansions suck for people who have been used to hiking Mittersill and hitting amazing pow lines but the mountain needs to take some steps to get more business or it will be bought out. THEN we are in trouble and it will become terrible. Ski lodges will pop up everywhere and it will turn into a tourist attraction.

Personally I don't mind racers everywhere - it's the fools who don't know how to ski at all that piss me off. Sure, racer kids are probably the worst people in the world, but I would much rather deal with them all being on their 'race trails' vs. some dumbasses who are staying on the mountain for a full week and learning how to ski getting in my way all do.
 
^I totally agree. Cannon still has a long, long way to go to becoming anywhere near what loon is, and I doubt that it ever will. There are still a bunch on unmarked trails on the main mountain that are fantastic of powder days. I think its just too bad that they are ruining a great thing for the racers.

I remember the first time I ever climbed to the top of Mittersill when I was 7. It was one of the most proud moments of my life... It's just too bad no one will ever have that again.
 
^ Totally agree awesome feeling... Bad wrap all the way around. Truth is not whole lot of options when comes to increasing income. I think that Cannon will always be a locals mountain, no matter how many racers there are. Racing is what created cannon, is what is gonna save it, and is what is going to hopefully keep it a locals mountain. I just wish it wasn't filled with a bunch of pricks, guess we will just have to deal with it.
 
Racers aren't really the problem. To be honest I like having them on the mountain because it's easier to pick up chicks on Zoomer. I ski with a lost of FSC people, and they are all for the project so it's a little bit strange talking to them about it. It also stinks that now I have to go over to Mittersill to look at girls in GS suits...

The racers isn't what bothers me. It's that they are destroying my favorite part of Cannon. Some people argue that they are restoring Mittersill to what it was in the past, but I for one prefer it being a side country area.

Oh well it is what it is at this point. I'm gonna explore some of the hiking trails on the backside this year so if any of you guys want to join, let me know.
 
I think your pretty spot on with most of that... ha. Not much thats gonna change now, but there are difintitly dtill some good sidecountry spots around the mountain still
 
Reading these comments is quite interesting. After skiing Cannon for like 16 years now every winter this is the first one i won't be there (currently in Montana). But i think as far as goes Mittersill it was ruined when the lift was put back up. Literally don't even like skiing over there unless its like 8:30 on a pow day cuz it gets skied like no ones business. But it's what it is, Cannon makes no money because it's not like Loon and WV. But no one wants Cannon to be like that, Loon with all the people and WV with the stuck up douche bags who think they are the shit because they go to "school" and compete. Lars does a sick job with the park for the resources he has and the comps are a step in the right direction. FSC is gunna do what they do, they have money and is a sick program if you race, even though we all hate the racers. But think of all the parents that buy the season passes, go up every weekend, buy the food..exct. its a huge money maker so of course they are going to let it happen. So at this point im just glad there won't be as many racers in the park. As iv grown out of park though, iv seen more how Cannon is just sick place to ski. So many rad people, so many sick things to ski (if you know where to look) and just a good vibe.

Sad i won't be skiing Cannon as much this year, definitely going to make it up over break a few times.
 
Right on Chris. At this point it is bound to happen simply because of the resourses that FSC has. I just think it's a real shame to see such a great thing go, even if it is for something good (maybe not in my eyes though).

Hopefully getting into backcountry this year will take me to some new spots that I've been eyeing over the years at Cannon.
 
Havent skied cannon much, but most likely going to psu next year so it will be my home mountain for the next 4 seasons. I never skied it before the lift was put in, i agree with chris in saying mittersil is a shitshow unless you are there before 10:00 on a pow day
 
+1 to the comment that they do a great job with their park. They always have some fun features / decent jumps in there nowadays. The big cannon rail they have is AWESOME and you never see those anywhere. For the amount of space / resources they have to work with the park staff does an excellent job IMO. Looking forward to their park opening this season.

dats what happens, everyone skis like Waterville or Loon and then when it snows every bruh with two sticks decides that Cannon is the place to be...
 
Honestly, in the short amount of time I have been skiing, Cannon was one of the first bigger mountains I skied. They have come a long way. It is a joke the amount of people and gapers are at loon and WV is even a joke. Cannon is by far my favorite East Coast mountains. The big air comp they had last year, that jump was by far the best jump I hit all year long. Lars and his crew kills it and that park gets better year by year. Not to mention has some of the best overall skiing on the East. It will be fun to go work with them this year and make Cannon something no body thought it would be. It may take time, but it will happen and Cannon will be better known for its parks eventually.
 
I'll most likely be up on saturday with a few friends. If you see a couple of idiots on blades at the end of the day then thats us.

I was actually up there on Sunday the seventh.

For early December it was really good and their pre-season park was on point but let's be honest, the front five was where it was at!!! My friend and I had fresh tracks all morning since they dropped ropes on Avy, paulies, zoomer, and banshee. The rest of the mountain was pretty nice and snow making piles were everywhere so jibing around was a blast. Also in the last few days, the reports show they picked up about a foot of snow and the trail counts up to 37 according to their website. The count was about 25 when I was there so around Christmas the conditions should be real nice!!! Can't wait to get back up there!!!!!!
 
Just got back from Cannon. Today was pretty damn fun because there was no one around. Decent coverage around. Front 5 was left ungroomed and although the snow was thick and heavy you could still slash around the edges. Early season glade runs are shaping up, but still plenty of obstacles to keep an eye on. The park... Sigh... typical cannon. Not one rail or box in, only the stupid propane tanks. There is also a small jump. They are blowing snow in tossup though so probably in 2 weeks or so there will be some improvement to the park.
 
I was up yesterday, they moved the park to make way for racers since last week. They are going back to that hip-show thing they did last year. I had tons of fun though, probably went a little too hard for just getting back into it, my back is killing my from boosting too hard off some snow the cats pushed up. Visibility was fun...

I dunno most of the locals but I saw Angus and some other familiar folk, I was wearing a black ski mask and some orange pants
 
We were ALL over Cannon this weekend. Coverage is fantastic for mid-December! It surprises me that the upper mountain isn't open, because there is plenty of natural coverage and it actually skied really well up there. Same in many of the tree shots. We hit it all..... (scrubbed tracks from closed terrain)......

Cannon is pretty sweet right now. I just wish both my heel plates and forward pressure weren't broken on my pivots. Snow wherever you go.
 
FUCK YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHH, CANNON WAS MONEY LAST WEEKEND!!!!! EVERYTHING FROM DJ'S TO TAFT AND EVEN MITTERSILL HAD GOOD COVERAGE!!!! On another note its going to be so fucking cold next weekend but hopefully i'll see some of you out there.
 
Has cannon attempted to set up their main park yet? Was really looking forward to another great setup this year... Hopefully with the recent snow they will build out the park ASAP for some spring laps
 
Still just a few rails and small jumps at the bottom of lower cannon, conditions were really good today though can't wait for a bit more snow to open up the woods.
