I'm thinking of buying a video camera, and the Cannon GL1 seems like a good choice. I am aware of its poor sound quality, but i'm more worried about Video quality. Any comments?
 
Would not recommend a gl1 an old camera and cold weather don't mix together well. Also the shift is to HD so why stay at SD? To get good colors from the camera is not so easy and when you get it there not even that great. A panisonic gs500 is about the same. I would just go HD with an hv30 want to go tapless canon hfs100. Can go prosumer with an fx1 or fx7 or an hmc150. There are so many better options then the gl1.
 
You're also comparing $1000+ cameras to the GL1 that you can pick up for under $500 now. For a first camera, I don't think it would be terrible. You can learn the manual controls of filming. I guess I compare it to buying a brand new pair of skis to with the latest technology to learn park, or a used pair off your buddies to see if you like it. At least with the GL1, if he decides that filming isn't for him, he isn't out $2k.
 
You are a fucking idiot, and you probably have the worst attitude on this whole site. For some reason you put yourself above everyone on here when you're video making is nothing special at all. I'm not saying your bad and that you don't know some shit, but holy fuck man, you are in no position to be such a fucking dick and talk down to as many people as you do. You must think very highly of yourself because every post I see you make in this forum you're making fun of someone. That makes you pretty cool... If you're not gonna be giving helpful advice then don't bother posting.
In regards to this thread... Save up and get an Hv30, the GL1 is a really bad choice. You'll get way better quality with the hv30 and almost as many manual controls as the gl1 has.
 
I feel allen's rude comments are usually deserved though. Anybody can do a simple google search and read that the GL1 is a terribly retarded option as far as video cameras go...
 
i'm not an expert on video cameras, but the gl1 does have 3ccds i think, so how does its color saturation compare to an hv30 which is hd, but has a cmos sensor?

i've filmed with an hv30 and i was pleased with the quality, but i wasn't exactly blown away.

in other respects the hv30 is a much better option though.
 
GL2 is an improvement from the GL1 improved audio and it's much easier to get better colors out of the camera but still HD is where it's going...not saying you have to go HD just 5-6 years im feeling more HD then SD
