Candide Thovex was the first skier to hit chads gap? At age 17!

Just in the middle of watching Few words(holy shit it's good) and they're showing how chad is attempting chads gap in 1999, he just misses it twice and doesn't go for a third, then Candide(only 17 at the time, what the fuck) asks him if he can hit it, and first try just completely gaps it perfectly. I don't think there's a video of it online(the only similar one is of the next year when he hit it) so buy the movie! definitely worth it.

worddd.

someone should make a thread, and then people can reply with events that they think should be on this timeline.

Yeah, I'm sure there's lots of people that know, but I've only been on ns for less than 2 years(and skiing about the same).

Also his hit on big bertha I'd probably say could be worse than dumonts huge flat drop, so insane.

yep not a dis to you .. welcome to the world of NS .. it's awesome!

PS: watch this, great east coast history piece!

He was 16, not 17 (he was 17 the next year when he did the d spin). Also there is video of him clearing it at 16 and its shown in Few Words

Such a good idea, so many epic moments that helped make the skiing we see today possible! I've been watching a lot of my old flicks lately I will try and start compiling some sort of list.

You can order the dvd from sportsflicks.com, I did and it should arrive shortly unless it's all a horrible lie. Other than that last I checked people were pissed off because it wasn't on itunes in time for Christmas but it could well be by now, I haven't checked because it makes me angry that i can't burn shit I buy off itunes so I'm done with that.

Not on iTunes yet,

@eheath like I said there's a lot I'm unaware of

@boax I said that in the description.

Il hopefully watch that film line if I can remember when I have time.

The following is my two cents, read it if you please. If you don't want to read my opinion, then disregard it.

There is a wide expanse of age of this site. Ranging from the stereotypical 12 year old to the 40 year old who was one of the original Hot Doggers, and has since fallen victim to the jaded local ID. It would be impossible to all have the same knowledge and be up to speed on a sport that changes radically months at a time. So what is the point?

As a 18 year old, it is virtually no use to me to know what was going on in the industry when the pioneers were 18. I cannot talk about that with my other 18 year old friends unless we all got onto the same page.

Is it great to known where you have come from to know where you might end up? For sure! Would I love to learn about it in passing or have someone older that tell me about it? Yes. Am I going to go out of my way to learn the names of the heavy hitters in the first few L1P flicks? No. I have my experience that I was actually around for, the experiences and changes from the past 5 years of freeskiing.

If I didn't, I would just be a history book of second hand knowledge that has no emotional connection to me. I didn't see Yearbook at the Boulder Theatre, I saw The Dream Factory (this is no comparison obviously, but that is the only premier I saw at the Boulder Theatre) with today's athletes, not the pioneers. I have however, since snagged a copy and seen the film, it was phenomenal.

If you are having trouble taking away the meaning I am trying to convey it is this; I have my experiences and you have yours.

One should not be ashamed because he hasn't seen JP Auclair's part in Degenerates or The Game, and then YouTube it out of sheer terror that an OG member will yell at him. Rather, one should be stoked that he can say what he was doing, or who he was with, when he first saw JP's street seggy from All.I.Can.

That being said, I am going see Candide's flick one way or another. I hear it's an amazing chronicle of the man a good portion of MY favorite athletes look up to.

idk dude, I went back and watched all the movies from the 80s that I wasn't alive for & definitely developed a better appreciation of everything skiing. Same with skateboarding and movies like Animal Chin. There's no good argument for not checking out what was going on before you arrived on the scene.

This thread is probably for the best. There are tons of kids on here who dont know such things, and plenty other things of the same significance.

A timeline of freeskiing that was straightforward and easy to read would be amazing

Chad's gap of all things doesn't exactly have a huge amount of reliable information

In my opinion i think you're missing the point of the history. Its not about who did what trick and when and or how old he was, its about the stories and experiences of the older generation and what you can learn from them. Learning about freeskiing isn't about winning points with people its simply about sharing the joy of skiing. it makes no difference to anybody but yourself. If you have a closeminded mentality, you are only limiting yourself.

Well he clearly says that he would enjoy listening to the experience of someone from an older generation. Just because he is not going out of way to research what was happening at that time, doesn't mean that he has a closed minded mentality.

He said it is "virtually no use to me to know what was going on in the industry when the pioneers were 18." Im not hating, thats his opinion but generally speaking thats a closeminded way of looking at things

I believe many of you are taking my words out of context, and trying to pick apart pieces. Examine my argument as a whole.

I am not closed minded. I bear knowledge of my past but not in the way others think is vital. All I am asking for is the experience, a legit connection. Not some fabrication or feeling that is forced.

Wether that connection is shared with me, as I said, OR I experience it myself.

Thisthisthis

see far too much of stuff like this on here. more stoke less people trying to assert dominance.

That's bullshit, if you're not talking to your friends about stuff that they've never heard of I don't know what the fuck you're doing. Do you guys just talk about stuff you agree on all day long?

At the very least, looking back on the history of skiing will give you more appreciation for the new movies you're watching now and in the future.
