Canadian Death Panel Denies Man Life Saving Drug

I see... I truly wish for a society where things like this wouldn't happen, but I'd also be a hypocrite seeing how little I contribute to the third world where 500k a year would...can't even imagine how much it would help.

i think its unlikely any health care model in the world, real or theoretical, would pay for this guy. in the end it just sucks to be him.

Interesting topic, where do you draw the $'s line on saving a person's life? We don’t live in a fantasy world so there has to be a measurable dollar amount unfortunately. At some point you have to say no and shift the money elsewhere, we can't save everyone. I could never work a job that was making profit off of dying people in need... someone has to though.

it depends on what kind of policy you have. you can get better coverage but you're going to have to pay a premium for it. luckily, i happen to know that i would be just fine if put in this guys shoes.
fuck universal healthcare. i think that paying a bit more to get the best health service as fast as possible makes sense. I mean, it could be my life that we're talking about here, and quite frankly, i value my life a hell of a lot more than someone i don't know and i'm not willing to sacrifice my wellbeing for theirs. call it selfish, but you can't disagree.

thats rough, but even if i supported universal healthcare i wouldn't expect the government to shit a 500000 dollar brick for me... of course they definitely could... its amazing how much money the government inefficiently fucks around with... although over time and with more and more people, 500000 dollars a year would add up

you are so dumb it hurts, one patient will not cause a countries health system to crumble regardless of the cost of treatment. Even in the case you were talking about the diseases itself, it was stated in the article that it was very rare. The strongest factor in my rant is the fact that within this very article it is stated that a person is being treated by this disease, IN CANADA, proving that this disease will not claim the life of canadas health care system.

A situation like this sets something called precedent. If we pay for this guy's apparently live saving medication, then what will we have next? if we can pay for him? then obviously it opens the floodgates for all the other people that have been denied. This has much farther reaching implications than you realize. It's shitty, but if he's not dead after 12 years it really stops being life saving.

this i know id be ok in his shoes

unfortunately, our health insurance is about 800 a month, so not cheap, but pretty much worth it in the end

Wait a minute... Did I read that wrong or does a guy with the same disorder who lives across the country in Quebec get the drug?? Is it just the BC panel thats denying the guy or federal? Why doesn't he just move to another provence to get it?? Yeah that would suck but I mean if its life or death seems like a logical thing to do.. Obviously fighting a battle with the government is a losing one..

it also should be said that the drug probably will not always cost that much, or other drugs might be developed in the future. Unfortunately the companies have to run a profit which could likely keep rare drugs like this expensive.

Honestly private vs public healthcare doesn't fucking matter when the entire pharmaceutical industry is basically run by huge private corporations. It's pretty sad that these advancements in medicine are pretty much made because of money. There would be no drug at all if the money wasn't an incentive for them to develop it.

i was gonna develop this more but fuck it, it's 4am

Well if all 8000 Americans (only in america so more elsewhere) got the drug the price would be driven down quite a bit right? It would only cost them $100,000 a year to make up $800 million in a year. Either way the pharma companies are fucking scumbags.

Probably not by a whole lot... maybe by about 15% over a few years.. but for the most part drugs like these dont go down very much from their initial value until theres either a widespread contagious epidemic of the disease, or they find a much more cost effective way of developing the drug.
The company making this drug isn't too worried about just making up that 800 bucks... if they are pulling in as much as they still are for it without having to actually make much, they can focus on keeping the operation small, reducing overhead, and slowly but surely making bank out the asshole for it.

this is why socialized medicine doesnt work. If he lived in america and paid for his health insurance, this would be covered no questions asked. maybe michael moore can use some of the money he made from his movie about how great canadian socialized healthcare is and pay for the canadian guys life saving drug. But its pretty obvious that michael moore would not do that, because then he would have half a million dollars less to spend every year at burger king

and wow all you 12 year olds saying he would not be covered by american health insurance and its ok for him to just die... fucking wow, i cannot wait until someone in ur family gets cancer and doesnt get covered so i can tell you "dont worry its just one person"
