Canada and snowmobiles?

Hey NS!

Me and 3 friends from Denmark, are planning to experience the fluffy titsdeep powder in Canada (Revelstoke, Big Red Cats, Whitewater, Kicking Horse).

Seeing the availability on Snowcats and the prices, we thought about the option of renting snowmobiles and combining it with tracking, alot.

So the question is, does anyone know some good rental shops, or private persons who rent out snowmobiles in or near the areas mentioned before?

And is it even a good idea to snowmobile in theese areas?

And do you need some kind of certificate to drive one?

Regards, Johan Duus

If anyone wants to share experiences, please DM me :)

Semi-serious answer:

I don't know any places in particular to rent.

There's no particular license needed. Just make sure you're somewhere sledding is allowed. So not in national parks, for example.

It's a lot of fun.

The big risk is avy danger. With a sled it's super easy to get into sketchy terrain.

Hey, thanks for the response!

We will be highly aware of avy dangers! Mostly we think of using them as transport to the feet of different faces, and then tour to the top.

If your intentions are to use them for skiing then I'd stick to cat skiing.

This is why:

-Sledding is friggin hard, you will most likely spend most of the day/s stuck trying to get somehwere if you haven't ridden a sled in dick deep snow....... That somewhere is also very difficult to find if you don't have a guide or know where to go. use google earth if you do.

-Rental sleds are not setup for sled skiing (might be able to get the Burton summits that are but doubtful they have them)

-Renting one sled is $300-$400 plus about $40 a day in fuel and $10 for oil. And if you break it you'll be paying more. Which pretty much makes it the same price as cat skiing. You'll get far more skiing in.

There is no real regulations or controls of any types out there as far as avalanches go and plenty of dumb rednecks out there so it's not very safe.

Sled skiing isn't cheap..... But tons of fun.

Everything everyone else said but...

Mountain Motor sports in Golden/kicking horse at least does guiding, maybe rentals. Aarons the man so he can point you to the best solution.

Do you have a truck and trailer or ramps sorted out? Golden and Revy have unreal sledding.

Yeah, I realize I didn't mention vehicles. You'll need some way to get the sleds to/from the trailheads.
