The Camp Fortune Capital Huck and Chuck Half Pipe Contest

Where: Camp Fortune, National Capital Outaouais region

When: March 14, 2004

Why: Because It’s Going to be Sick!!

The third Camp Fortune Capital Huck and Chuck will be taking place at Camp Fortune (12 min. North of Ottawa) in the Gatineau hills, sponsored by Orage, Volkl and Tommy and Lefebvre. Last years two events, despite the -30 weather and then torrential rain were a tremendous success complete with sick air, excellent beats, wicked prizing and celebrity judges like Dave Crichton and Jeff Bean. There were 40 competitors per event and over 150 spectators, every competitor walked away with a prize. This years Half Pipe contest promises to be just as great!

The Camp Fortune Capital Huck and Chuck is presented by:

Orage, MogulMike.com, Camp Fortune, Tommy and Lefebvre, Silver Cartel, Volkl, Market, Line, Laikus Smith, and Pro-tec.

Event Schedule:

· 8:30am – registration opens in main lodge

· 9:30am – registration closes

· 9:30am -10:45am – open practice

· 11:00am -12:30pm – First run (best 1 of 2 format)

· 12:30pm - 1:15pm – lunch break and training

· 1:30-3:00 – Second run (best 1 of 2 format)

· 3:00 – 3:30 Best hit Jam

· 4PM – awards ceremony at main lodge

Format: Best 1 of 2 for qualifying; 3 categories as follows:

· Under 16

· 16 and over

· Women’s open.

Finals: top 6 or 8 in each category advance (dependent on the number of registered athletes). Finals will be best 2 of 3.

Prize Schedule: All entry fees will be rolled back into cash prizing + product from…. Orage, Tommy and Lefebvre, Silver Cartel, Volkl, Market, Line, Laikus, Smith and Pro-tec.

When I was there last weekend the pipe was un-skiable... but we'll be fixing that soon, as long as the old pipe cutter still grinds!

Just one more thing: there's no finals, it's best 1 of 2 format, followed by a best hit jam afterwards. We'll try and run the second runs in reverse order, too.

 
i think that idea has passed, a jump comp would have been much better, hopefully a little more planning will go into the comp next year if mike decides to do one, there great........ as for me i wont make it.....

The reason we're going for a pipe comp is because we did two big airs last year, and pipe needs to be pushed more in this region. Fortune is the only place with something even close to a halfpipe, is this needs to change! It's an Olympic event for snowboarding, and soon-to-be for skiing, so it's only natural to push it!

 
rails are cool too, but i respect the variety your trying to get, and i didnt mean it was unorganized....

the way i see if every hill in the region made a pipe then they could hold a contest between themselves so has the best pipe, then hill with the best pipe holds a pipe comp, this brings in sponsers, people and more money for the hill, building a pipe should be an incentive to get more coverage of that hill

yea, thats all well and good, but fortune needed to have a pipe earlier in the year, and they need to pay someone who actually has experience building park features to groom it. basically, the only people who do good in the comp are gonna be from out of town anyways, so essentially, nothing has been accomplished in the way of progressing pipe in ottawa.

I'm super interested in checking this out, but the pipe needs to be fixed or there simply can't be a contest.

I was up there today and the pipe is in really shitty shape. It seriously needs to be recut and needs to have way more transition. Right now it actually lips inwards at points so it throws you into the centre of the pipe.

You organizers need to call bob and peter Suderman and tell them that it needs to be done and exactly what they need to do. Neither of them have a clue why the pipe sucks so much or why no one is using it.

P.S.

You should do it in a jam format, that's so much fun and how about a telemark class?

As I've mentioned before, the pipe in its current state is unskiable. In fact, it's dangerous with the troughs in the middle of the wall. Just to be clear, we certainly don't plan on running an event with it in that shape. The Sudermanns are well aware of the bad pipe, so that's why they're eager for the event and to have it fixed up. They're in a tough position with an antique pipe cutter and novice park groomers.

I think it would be great if as many people from Ottawa and beyond would come to the event this weekend. It's a tremendous opportunity to show the Sudermanns and Fortune just how popular new school is and how much we all want more pipes, jumps, rails, etc. Not to mention there will be tons of great prizes!

 
it just sucks that nobody will have time to put a run together beforehand, unless they are willing to drive hours for a pipe...

I was tryin some runs tonite and it is still unskiable. Their leaving the grooming to the last minute dont ya think? cant get any practice in.

best hit should be good! definately go out and show the sutermans who's boss in this town! IM in BC so I wont be able to make it, but everyone should definately go, even if the pipe isn't the best, it would still be a good time!

is there a way to keep people out on saturday who dont intend on competing? The pipe is gettin choked up with people straight lining through on a cruz.

yea, as well as watching families just coast ight into the pipe, with no regards for us in line, ive also even seen instructors bring their classes of 5 year old beginners into the pipe. im pretty sure that is a very very bad thing...

ya the pipe can be pretty dangerous when all these kids are skiing don the walls. More then once have i see skiers smashing into litte kids who just get in the way. Fortune should make a park pass or something just to make things safer.

I think all you peeps should just stop your complaining and showe up, its going to be a dope event. its not just a sick pipe that makes a great event, its going to be the people that show up and support it who really make it fun. At least those who do it will be a sick session.

the pipe isnt that shitty, i know some friends,skiers actually, that were throwing 5, flares, zeros, and even one dude did a allyoop flat 5, the pipe has potential so the comp should be a lot of fun.

Too bad it wasnt open today...i though it was gonna be ready for people to practice on it. Good thing focus was there or it would have been a waste of a day.

 
Unfortunately we needed to keep it closed today so that it's good for tomorrow. When it was being shaped this week, the snow was super soft, so it's taking some time to set. If people had hit it today, the skier's right wall would be a mess because of the sun and soft snow.

Be there bright and early tomorrow cuz there'll be lots of time to practice!

In a nutshell, Chris Honeywell won junior mens with Bryan Snow in a close second. Jon Stern took the senior mens, followed by Danny Israel in second and Pat Cadieux in third. Jeff Thomas won the biggest hit jam session and a chunk of cash for it.

Once I get the full results loaded on the NCD page, I'll let y'all know.

 
definately a sick comp! too bad jeff couldn't stick his 5 or else he would have owned it! there were some pretty crazy groms out there killin it. one dude almost stuck a corked 7 in the big hit comp, i should mention he's only 13!
