Camera Setup

So.... I'm looking to get myself my first camera and I thought here would be a great place to start. I know that there are tons of threads out there of "Which Camera", but I made this because not may say anything but which camera.

I was hoping if you could could give me some insight to which extras/accessories are essential/helpful.

My budget is around 1000. I'd be using it for ski video and nature photography.

Thank for ur help

for video you can do alot with a go pro but if you want to do more witch it sounds like you do you could get a dslr wich i warn you is very complex and exspive and can be never ending lerning video on a go pro might be a good way to start and then geting a dslr or camera. i have shooting for 4 or 5 years and the idea of shooting skiing with a big rig can be very intimidating. but if you want to do video and pics i would get a canon dslr or you could get a panisonic gh2 used with some lenses the panisonic could work very well its a grate camera. google both and tell me what you think.

if i where you i would get the panisonic

For doing both video and photography with a budget of $1000 I would get:

Canon t3i body used for $300

Tamron 17-50 for $280

ND Filter: $20

Two 32GB Memory Cards: $50

Extra Battery: $30

Tripod: $200

Rode Mic: $150

Camera Backpack: $70

These prices are rough estimates and are my personal suggestion based on my own experience. Hope this helps you get an idea of the prices of things. Best of luck

gh2 is nice for skiing becuse its not to big plus theres a bunch of lenses for it that dont cost a whole lot you could also learn alot on one

Sounds like a pretty good starting setup for $1000. Not sure where you would get a t3i for $300 though. Otherwise that's a pretty good way to go, maybe spend less on a backpack and get some non-canon batteries for cheaper.

This is a great start but I personally would change a few things.

Get a few non-canon extra batteries as well, they're cheap and if you get enough of them they are reasonably reliable.

I personally don't care so much about the tripod. I would say get a cheaper one and maybe a cheap glide cam. I hate hauling a tripod around and you can throw a screw in the top end of a ski pole and use it as a monopod for pretty good results. For a beginner just starting out I don't think a tripod is really worth it. (on the flip side, making sure your shots are stable is really important, shaky shots are super common for noobs which is why a tripod is a good idea.

I wouldn't get a camera backpack just because I feel like the lower end ones at least aren't worth it. If the gear listed above is all you get then a ski backpack like a heli-pro with a DSLR case inside will do well.

I also really prefer a fanny pack to a backpack. If you shoot mostly off-piste it can be a little sketchy to set up the shot and chances are your skiers would rather be skiing pow than waiting for you to set up. I use a fanny pack to carry my 7D, my 18-200, my 11-16, an extra battery and sometimes my OM10. I can strap a tripod or a glide cam to the outside. I wear it on my belly so everything is accessible, one zipper and you are ready to shoot. I also think this protects it better, if I crash I can ball up and protect the camera on my belly instead of having it take the impact if I land on my back.

Just my .02$
