looking for a good high quality cameras that are decently priced and aren't DSLR's. which ones have you had good experiences with and like?

firstly I would recommend a DSLR, why don't you want one ? if it's a size/weight issue, try the 400D/450D from Canon, pretty small for a DSLR but packed with features and awesome quality, if you're after a p&s then try any kodak, I think they're pretty good, I started on a EasyShare DX6490, really good camera... (if they still make it) here is an example of the picture it takes

if you compare it to the stuff in that collection taken on a DSLR, you'll see the difference...

but whatever you find easiest...

dont want a DSLR Because they are expensive and im really just not too into photography that much. but i was thinking about one of the kodak HD point and shoot cameras they look pretty nice

well if your wanting a good camera to shoot...then while your using your non dslr your going to be thinking to yourself if only i could go bigger fastest....lower iso...more control...higher fps.....lenses dslr you can get a st for 350 used is very good condish and just pick up some cheap glass.... i suggest the f 1.8....does everything a lens should and for its price its a great lens. Anyways just my opinon, hoped that helped and you understood the first part.

yea copy that, but if you just want a p&s go with a Kodak, they know what they're doing when it comes to compacts...

No they don't, I had one, worst piece of shit I ever owned. When it comes to cameras I feel that a company that started with making film should stay with what they are best at. Kodak, Fuji, Ilford, etc. If you are lookin at a p&s look towards the ones that have always done that....make cameras. Nikon and Canon are some of the best on the market and they are not that expensive.

wow, I always found Kodak good for p&s, although thats just my experience... As far as SLR goes, look no further than Canon.

Nikon glass doesn't come close to that of Canon, although as far as bodies are concerned, there about the same... I've heard horror stories about Nikon p&s so I think if I was to buy one I'd Buy a canon Ixus...

the Digital IXUS 85 IS comes out some time this month in the UK, looks like a bargin: http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_Finder/Cameras/Digital_Camera/IXUS/Digital_IXUS_85_IS/index.asp

£239

I am currently looking at cameras and I think I have it narrowed to a Nikon D80 or the Canon Rebel XTi. I really don't know shit about cameras and I am looking to spend 600-900 dollars. What would be a good option for me?

Canon for sure, if you ever want a new Lens, your gonna want it to be Canon, way more posibility for expansion, I nearly bought the rebel, but I went for the 40D instead... I think the rebel and the 40D are both stunning, (and not to hard to learn on, I learned on a 40D, I can only assume that a rebel would be the same if not easier)...

what is the difference between Powershot and Ixus, or have canon just made two identical lines of camera, changed the case and name and charged an extra few $$$

I've been shooting for well over 10 years now and I have shot probably every make of camera. Canons are good but I prefer Nikon, Just about every camera I own is a nikon, except for my medium formats. I worked in a camera shop and I would see at least 2-3 canons coming in for repair every month. In the 3 years that I worked there only one nikon camera came in for repair and it was for a cleaning. I always say that you should pick a camera that feels most comfortable to you.

As for the glass, that's a matter of opinion. If you are going for quality of glass noone can beat Leica. Thats what they specialize in. However, seeing how their glass is so damn expensive hardly anyone uses it. I actually have both Nikon lenses and Tameron. Both work fantastic.

I believe that the Ixus and the Powershot are the same just named differently cause of different countries.

You want to be careful about buying electronics from other countries because alot of times they are calibrated for different "zones". My sis had a dvd player in her laptop and went abroad and she bought a movie while there and watched it. When she came home she couldn't watch any of her movies from here on it cause the dvds were from a different zone and locked her player to that zone

I've had two nikon digi p&s's break on me. My origional digi rebel stills works great, and my girlfriends canon p&s is nice too. I would reccomend canon based on personal experience.

oops, someone needs to learn what a DSLR is.... the idea is that it isn't a p&s and you don't have to rely on a tiny screen to see your picture before you wildly depress that button that has little respect these days...

Thanks, I get a little angry a photographer's thousands of dollars in equipment gets compared to a digital compact... I'd like to see someone stick a 100-400mm on that canon powershot...

ha ha ha, I can see it now, spend $200 on a camera, spend $1500 on a lens, oops.

I need new glass, if this ever happens to someone reading this thread, send me the lens, ef and ef-s fittings are fine

He said he was looking a nice camera that isnt a DSLR, so i made a suggestion. Although the g9 has the live screen, the point i was making is that it has most of the manual controls of a dslr, including a light meter, manual shutter/aperture, iso white balance ect at easy access. most point and shoots have complex work arounds to use manuel controls, where as this particular camera has them readily available (except manual focus)

Fair comment but calling a p&s "basically a DSLR" does kinda push it, allot, lots of current p&s' have things such as metering, AE, TV and manual modes, but I wouldn't call any of them "basicaly DSLRs" just point and shoots with functions which are used by 2% of users, and are not properly integrated in to the cameras... most of the shots I have taken could not be taken by a G9, no matter how good you are, it just hasn't got the functionality...

fair call:
