Ok so my friend lost his camera and set up and wants to buy a new one. I tried to answer all the questions from the sticky thread for him as he doesnt have a ns account.
let me know if there is anything else I need to answer!
thanks in advanced!
1) What is your budget? How much money can you spend right away, and do you think you can get more money to invest in the future?

$500 to start out with. more in the future

2) What experience do you already have with cameras? Have you ever even used one before? Have you helped your friend out with his camera? Have you owned your own?
He owned a sony .ans

3) What gear, if any, do you currently have? (tripod, old camera lenses, mics, etc)
He left all of his stuff ontop of his car and drove off. so everything he had is gone.

4) What are you planning to shoot and how do you want to use your camera? Are you going to use this with the sole purpose of shooting skiing? or do you think you might try other stuff as well (movies, documentaries, short films, etc)

80% skiing 20% other stuff
5) Do you want a camera that you can hand to your friends, that could or could not have film experience, and let them shoot you? or will you be doing all the filming?
he will be doing most of the filming

6) When filming skiing, how do you tend to shoot? (follow cams, leave it on record on a tripod and hike, film from a tripod, etc)
follow cams mostly

7) What computer do you currently have/use to edit (if not currently editing, what would you most likely use)? If you can provide specifics, such as hard drive space, RAM, processor size, that would be great.

he has a computer dedicated to editing pretty much... not sure about RAM but I will find out later
8) What program do you currently edit on? How familiar are you with it (1- just learning; 10- I can make tutorials and know the keyboard layout)
He uses studio 12

$500?

Tell him to keep saving. If he's that into filming he shouldn't be buying a $500 camera.

ya... hes willing to buy used also.... he has just been without his camera all summer and has been saving just to get that much for one...

Tell him to look for a used hv20/30 or a new hv40. If his computer can handle it; look at something like the panasonic tm700 or the canon hfs200. But I agree with what was said above^^ If he's that serious about filming he's gunna need to dish out more then a grand on a camera alone. The "consumer" cameras mentioned above may have alot less manual control but they still produce some great images. Hope that helps

He lost his camera? Yeah I would go with a flip video camera. Maybe an offbrand flip camera. Yeah, go off brand.

ok thanks alot!
and to despite - he left it on the roof of his car and drove 30 min home. then drove back and it was gone..... pretty stupid move.... and ya he has an off brand flip right now haha

Which of those cameras would be the best? I found a hv30 for 495 with shipping on amazon from a legit buyer. So im thinking of pointing my friend in that direction.

Yeah it's similar to the hv series just not on tapes and on an internal hardrive which there is drawbacks to. I think it records in 1080p while an hv record in 720p. That is a good deal if you get the whole set-up, the lens is like 140 new I'm pretty sure.

what is all the differences between all the different types of media.. Like between tapes, super state drives, sd cards and whatever else there is
