My friends and I want to buy a camera for filming clips we pooled about $800 together with a bit left over for lenses or extra batteries or whatever, we kinda just want something thats practical and not too difficult to use, if anybody knows of something it'd be a big help, because i have no idea where to start looking, thanks.

Look no more.

Sony FDR-AX53

High quality, extremely user friendly - your granma could clip you up due to the great stabilizer. Batery life is unmatched.

4k - 25fps

1080 - 60fps

720 - 120fps

panasonic ag-dvx100be

If you can find 1 lol

Oh yeah also not easy to use, but IMO unmatched quality for cinematic video.

No, he said practical and not too difficult to use. I don't think that means shooting 4:3 SD to tapes and converting everything to digital while using a 30 year old camera lol.

Also VX1000 works way better for filming skating than it does skiing. An average rail for skis through a MK1 makes the skier look like a fucking ant on the horizon. Even in long lens, 4:3 doesn't suit the length of skis in the frame like it does the length of a skateboard in frame.

Also also 30 year old cameras with moving parts don't really like the cold very much, and they're really expensive for what you actually get.

There are some good recommendations here already, so I won't add more to the pot. I just wanted to say, you should do some thinking about what you're going to edit with and where you're going to store everything. Filming is generally the part you romanticize and imagine when buying a camera, but unless that $800 is going to waste, you'll have to consistently dump, sort, organize, share and edit all the shit you shoot.

iMovie is a decent way to do fisher price babies first edit, but I wouldn't recommend it since you'll want to move on sooner than later. The two main options are Davinchi Resolve and Adobe Premiere pro. Resolve is "free" but Premiere has an unmatched workflow (imo). Adobe offers student discounts and shit so you shouldn't have to pay full price. There is plenty of youtube tutorials on how to button push in either software, but it's more important that you learn editing techniques, and methods that apply to any software... Ex. how to start a video, how to change scenes, how to transition audio, how to end a video, how to color correct, how to color grade, when to use effects, how to use titles and text, etc. The final product is the funnest part, hope you guys get a camera and enjoy it

this is obviously not true, but the dvx is a great option if you're going the SD route. same with the canon gl2 imo. Otherwise, I'd recommend the hvx but p2 cards are expensive. Maybe get an hvx or hpx if you can get a good deal on a 64gb P2 card. hmc looks like a dope camera but last time I checked prices they seemed more expensive

As long as you don't get a gopro I think you'll be alright.

HVX or HPX is good, cheaper I think. If you want professional grade footage, not forgoing the intimacy of video shot on tape. DVX is the best option. Like I said I doubt you could find 1 tho.

Idk if the embed works but this video was all shot on an ax53 with no extra lens on it. For anyone with this cam if you put a lens on it the stabilizer will end up picking up the edges of the lens. Theres a great video of some old guy on youtube talking about it, but the gist is that you should buy a 55 to 72mm step up ring and then just buy 72mm lenses. I did this and it has worked perfectly for me this year

Also the zoom on these cameras is unreal

I mean the camera is professional grade, it's been used in many big movies, some shot ONLY with that camera.

Idk probably wouldn't be considered professional todays standards fuckin ultra HD fuckin 3D cinema avatar shot by James cameraman grandmaster cuck.

Fuck man those movies with the visuals just give me headaches, watched new antman movie holy fuck, paid 20 bucks for a migraine.

Fucking fuck

but yeah anyways, correct me if I'm wrong instead of being a sideline lil bitch about it, scoffing from afar n shit, you fa-fa-fa-fantastic fella. Yup anyways, there's professional graded cameras, probably like idk 10 grand for 1 of those things, porobly like that RED camera idk what to call it, its like shoulder mount n all tht. then there's like a middle ground with grey area everywhere, then there's consumer grade camera. But I'm open to correction by some mega pussy film school cuntsacks.

Do you want a video camera that you can do shitty zooms and stuff with? or do u want a DSLR that looks better and has changeable lenses? if the latter, get a used GH4, a kit lens, and a fisheye.

i wouldn't even recommend the 4 anymore, the GH5 is cheap and 10x better for many reasons.

And the DVX lies at somewhere between professional and middle in tht gray area, idk enough about cameras, and I don't care enough to learn. It's a great professional gradded camera at consumer gradded price.

covering up your complete lack of knowledge with this wannabe victim rant is bullshit. You mentioned two cameras that are completely different then referred to SD tapes as "professional grade" like its the 90s, his question was pretty justified.

and for reference, a red camera would be considered professional grade, the cost is irrelevant. saying footage from 2002 is professional grade would be wildly inaccurate. this doesn't mean it cant be used for professional applications, people shoot movies on iphones now and i wouldn't consider those professional grade cameras.

videos are about the creator, not the tools. the tools merely help the filmmaker convey their vision, many people overlook the person and focus on the gear.

I think all HD video is ass for action filming, therefore, DVX is professional graded. with that in mind. Evan. should we rewind the tapes here retard, go look. "IMO" was stated in all caps. Go delete that too so u don't look as dumb as you should feel tryna argue with me as head mod of the site.

Ya well I'm a caveman so.

Also DVX shoots miniDV not SD?! wtf. I guess with some models you could get it to shoot straight onto a laptop. But the chinese people doing that no longer do.

idk if you're trolling but miniDV is the size of the physical tape, it still records 480i aka SD.

No like 99% of the time I'm fucking around but I guess I don't know that miniDV isn't actually like casette. I thought it was tape??

also no joke chinese people were making the camera shoot directly to laptop but they don't do it anymore, that's a fact.

Hi8, beta, miniDV, DV, VHS are all types of tapes that are different sizes, they are all tape. people have been shooting straight to laptops since before the DVX, it wasnt the first digital camera.

It's a really good camera. IMO, professional quality. *if you are into shooting not HD footage.

TBH I wanna get into filming and all tht stuff and idk if I'm reading the wrong shit or what but, you need a firewire port to convert miniDV digitally so I just thought that was significant or rare..

yea ur right but its just more expensive

the gh4 is like $300 less on ebay... not worth it. The gh5 has sensor stabilization, that alone is worth the extra money, 4k 60fps is huge too. The gh4 isn't even worth buying, if you wanna save money, get the gh3.

Only allowed if he exclusively films "a day at Breck" edits

Fun fact: That edit wasn't shot on a dslr and glidecam combo. It was an hvx200, and I'm pretty sure it was all handheld as well.

If you are into the 2k or less club, the Sony FX30 (sans the top handle) is fucking awesome. Been loving playing with it. Then again, I also picked up this bad boy the other day for a project and it was super fun to play around with for the vibe we were working towards.

It can only shoot at 16fps at 1080p, can do 24fps at 720p at least! Fits in a sunglasses case and the fact that it's under $60 is just hilarious.

The highest of grades. I think that's your basic web streaming framerate? For actual recording, you are just rocking 720p, it's amazing.

I thought it was 24 fps for streaming? (Could be wrong) Either way you’re kind of limited to using absolutely no slow recording at 14 fps lol, 720 normally looks good tho

I wasn't referring to one specific video, but rather back in the day how everyone had a t3i and Chinese glide cam... And they all made variations of "a day at breck" with like 3 tricks and little to no effort haha
