Camera battery help.

This is probably a stupid question but honestly I cant figure it out. I just bought a t3i off a fellow NSer as im started to get more into photography and video work. It has a battery grip on it and sometimes i don't want that battery grip on there so i took it off and took the batteries out of the grip and tried to just place the regular battery in and it wont turn on. I looked it up its the same battery for both and i line up the battery right but it just wont turn on unless i use the battery grip. Any help would be appreciated, thanks. Sorry for the noob question

Do you have the battery cover on? my 60D wont turn on if the battery cover isnt on.

Generally it has a holder in the batterygrip itself.
